2 On December 8 th at the 8:00 p.m. service. Rabbi Mark Schiftan & Rabbi Alexis Berk will share with us what they experienced during the recent Interfaith Clergy trip to Israel. Join us on December 8 th during our 8:00 p.m. service as we say goodbye to,rabbi Allison & Ed Flash along with Sara, Adam & Daniel Best wishes on your journey to Seattle! Clearly from even a quick perusal of the November and this, the December, Kol Shalom publications, one sees that The Temple has a lot going on. I am very grateful that we as a congregation are able to offer such amazing opportunities. What interests me even more is how do we get to the point of offering anything. How does Temple decide to make available the myriad of study, worship, social action, and community building opportunities? Ever since our congregation s commitment to making the Covenant of Members the centerpiece of how we look at our relationship with each other, we have struggled with the real meaning and responsibility of that commitment. The Board is in the middle of an important discussion about how we make our Covenant the reality that we work from. Who sets the agenda? Who decides on the topics of discussion or study? Who can create a new approach to bring our Temple community together? Small congregations derive their direction from the expression of either a founding group or, if a little larger, a 2 Get on Board by Gus Kuhn Rabbinic presence. Larger congregations (over 1200 families or so) are really very corporate in their style. Their Religious School and/or their social action committee for example can be almost autonomous entities usually in best cases with strong congregational identity but often not. We work from a well known paradigm of a committee structure. This is part and parcel of our synagogue structure and the way members connect in our congregation. It is a factor of the size of our congregation. I think our congregation is in that sweet spot of size. We have strong leadership in the clergy and lay side that recognizes the importance of partnership. We have the ability from both a financial and human resource perspective to achieve much. This is the Covenant s model: To expect much of our clergy and staff and to offer much of ourselves. So who sets the agenda? The Temple through its Covenant says you set the agenda in partnership with the staff. Our commitment is to a bottoms-up approach where the desires of congregants get expressed by the committees and placed into action through the clergy/staff/lay partnership. This works well in most instances such as the recent Boulevard Bolt where so many volunteers worked to make the event hugely successful. The Bolt has its own coterie of volunteers because of its long history but part of its continued success comes from the direct support given by our clergy and staff, sometimes behind the scenes. Another somewhat smaller success story of the bottoms-up approach is our Women Engaged in Living and Learning (WELL) group. This group grew from several women who wanted to plan, in conjunction originally with Rabbi Flash and now with Rabbi Goldstein, opportunities to study and socialize. Ideas bubble up from both the congregants involved as well as from our Associate Rabbi. I point to successes and I believe we have many more. What our Board wants to explore is where we allow the professionals to just do it. or where committees feel out of the loop or unnecessary. Both the Clergy and lay leadership are committed to a congregational experience that promotes creativity and meaningful engagement with our Temple community. Our Covenant of Members asks you to lift up your voice and participate in the life of our Temple. We are searching for ways to best allow your voice to be heard and for your creative energy to be used for the betterment of The Temple. Your Board members and clergy seek your comments.
