2 I would like to invite you to join me on a unique trip to Israel in Feb. of This trip will be unlike any other group experience this community has ever offered. All of Nashville s Jewish congregations, along with rabbis from each of those congregations will be traveling together on a united community visit to the Jewish state. The trip will leave on Feb 7 th. It has been designed to accommodate the interest of both first time visitors as well as those Just like the daffodils in my yard and the sudden urge to clean out the carport, there are sure signs of Spring at Temple. One is the New Member Brunch the Membership committee hosts every year, giving officers and members of the Board the chance to meet some of the new families who have joined the congregation in the past 12 months. One recent Sunday morning, we gathered together to introduce ourselves and talk about where we were from and how we got to Temple. We had members from their 20 s into their 80 s and every age and family unit in between! It was so exciting to talk to each new member and hear what they felt they could offer to the congregation. I have told you before what new members mean to me, to us. They mean growth and new ideas and positive change. And as an outgoing president, it is encouraging to know that new people are stepping in and stepping up. Which leads me to the second sign of Spring at Temple the Leadership Temple series that Lewis Lavine is chairing. I recently had the chance to spend time with some of the participants of this program, which is designed to help interested members learn more about Temple and the opportunities for 2 A Message from Rabbi Schiftan A Unique Invitation to Travel who have been many times before. In addition to touring the country, particular attention will be paid to rather honest assessments of the complexities of religious purism, ethnic tensions within Israeli society, and the Israeli - Palestinian situation. Each of the rabbis participating on the trip will have the opportunity to share their own reflections and there will be several optional late afternoon or evening discussions to review the experiences of the day. The trip is sponsored by the Nashville Board of Rabbis. Signs of Spring leadership and involvement in this sacred congregation. My job that evening was to talk about The Temple s constitution, governance and organizational chart. Dry stuff, but vital to the success of the institution. As I explained to them, the time commitment by each officer insures a path of succession, as well as a president who has had a wide range of experiences, including presenting budgets, explaining compilations and talking with people about their Annual Giving pledge. It is the best training for the job and I would not trade it for anything. It makes for well-educated and prepared presidents and empathetic, committed and helpful past presidents! Once you have been in this position and spent 10 years working for a place you love, the desire to serve does not go away. We are so lucky to have this system in place that ensures commitment and continuity. But it begins with a commitment to find out what Temple offers. And one way to do that is through Leadership Temple. A third sign of Spring at Temple is TAF, the Temple Arts Festival. TAF is our one major fundraiser. Its success depends on the support of all of our members in both time and money. When it comes to giving of your time, there are many ways to help with TAF, including working a volunteer In talking with my colleagues throughout the country, I can tell you how rare it is for rabbis of different denominations to even sit down at the same table with one another, let alone develop and embark upon such a unique endeavor. I hope you will join us and proudly represent The Temple. Further information will be forthcoming in the very near future, but should you be interested, please call Kathy in the Rabbi s Study so that we can add your name to our and mailing list for the trip. by Patty Marks shift either the week before, during or after the actual event. There are many different types of jobs that need to be filled and everyone s time is both welcomed and appreciated. Of course, along with that, we hope everyone will consider making a financial contribution to TAF. Whether you are interested in pre-purchasing a certificate for art or making a donation to the event, any amount you can give is appreciated. Something else you can do is invite your friends, both Temple and non-temple members to join you on Saturday night for the Dessert Gala. There will be beautiful art and delicious food a perfect combination! It is exciting that TAF has become a fixed springtime event in our community. We have artists asking to be included and collectors who are anxious to see what they are bringing. Like Spring, after this snowy, cold winter, TAF is highly anticipated! Come be a part of it! One final sign of spring at Temple is the changing of the guard, as it were. April s Board of Trustee meeting will be the last one for a group of Board members and for me as President. I will have the chance to thank the Board, my fellow officers, the clergy and the congregation at the Annual Meeting on May 7 th. I hope you will join me. Until then, have a great Spring!

9 P L A Y S C H O O L Passover Memories By Jan Huettner There are many special family memories that I treasure when I think about the holiday of Passover. The smell of my mom s matzah ball soup wafting through the air served on the table that never seemed to end, stretched from the dinning room through the living room; my father gathering all of his grandchildren together, from the oldest to the youngest, picking up each symbol and going through the explanation of what the bone or the egg symbolized; the many college students that came to share our time together; running to find the afikoman, and the gathering of everyone around the piano to sing parodies. Now, as my own children are growing older, the memories are still there but we are creating new traditions. I will have a student Rabbi seated around the table and an orange on the seder plate to symbolize how far women have come, and even more parodies to sing around the piano. Looking on the computer, you can t even imagine the numerous ways to make your own Passover seder relevant and fun for children. There are several child friendly haggadahs now available; plague bags ready to order or make your own masks, juggling matzah balls, as well as the inflatable matzah ball. There are coloring and activity books, a magnetic seder set, stickers, pillow cases, Passover bibs, games, and even the popular Passover pop-up frogs, and children s Passover stories so that your children can become familiar with the story of Moses and the Jewish people fleeing from slavery in Egypt to freedom. New Passover recipes have popped up everywhere. What an exciting way to share Passover with your children by cooking new and delicious dishes to share with friends and family. The important point to remember here is that you should create your own wonderful memories to share with your family. Whether your family likes to sing or expound on how today s culture is still tied to modern day plagues, such as swine flu, earthquakes, or tsunamis that is your choice. Passover should be different from all other nights. Please take a moment to enjoy some pictures from our spaghetti dinner in early March. It was extremely successful and our parent committee did a wonderful job in providing a beautiful, entertaining evening. 9
