He was honored by the congregation during services on Friday, June 1. These remarks are excerpts from his reflections that he shared with the congregation on that evening.) A colleague of mine relates the following story: When, as a young man, he arrived at his first pulpit, he found three inscribed, sealed envelopes left in his desk by his predecessor. The first counseled: Open if the staff becomes obstinate. The second cautioned: Open if the members become uncooperative. The third warned: Open in the event of a board uprising. As soon as the then twenty-something clergyman met opposition from the staff, he opened the first envelope. It read: Blame everything on a lack of resources. That seemed to work for a while until some months later he became embroiled in a dispute with the membership, at which time he decided it was time to open the second envelope. It read: Blame everything on your predecessor. Finally, there was a board uprising. So he opened the third envelope. It read: Prepare three envelopes!!! Luckily, I have never needed the counsel of those three envelopes. Rather, I am in awe of how blessed I have been by the lessons I ve learned from my congregants over the past quarter of a century. Twenty five years ago, this month, I was ordained in the historic Plum Street Synagogue in Cincinnati, Ohio, the shrine of Classical Reform Judaism. During that time, I have been truly blessed to serve three wonderful congregations: In San Francisco and San Jose, California, and here in Nashville, Tennessee. My seminary, the Hebrew Union College, maintains a wonderful tradition for its alumni: At the quarter century milestone of service to the Reform Jewish Movement, the College invites its former students back to the seminary to receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. It was an overwhelmingly moving moment for me, as it was for many of my classmates. In 25 years, my colleagues and I have all experienced both triumphs and challenges. I suspect it is the same for members of the clergy of all faiths, who have reached this milestone, or similarly significant markers of extended dedication to their faith communities. Twenty-five years is long enough to have left a record, a legacy, of sacred service. As a rabbinic friend of mine and I reflected this past summer, the degree is both well learned and well earned. The lessons are not those of the classroom anymore, nor those of our professors; rather, they are the lessons our congregants have taught us, in the arenas of our various faith traditions, as applied to the real world, and the very real situations and complexities that real life places before us. I love every aspect of my rabbinate: I truly love to come to work each day, the newness and uniqueness every single day affords me; I love the varied roles I am called on to play -- teacher, preacher, ambassador, and pastor. I love to offer comfort to the afflicted, and I equally cherish the prophetic call to lovingly and gently afflict the comfortable. But what I -- and I suspect most of my colleagues in the clergy -- love the most, are the thousands of moments we alone are offered, to enter and to share the most meaningful moments of our congregants lives... and the opportunity to fill those meaningful moments with Jewish meaning and Jewish memory. At every turn of life s pages, from birth and bris to bar and bat mitzvah, from consecration to confirmation to wedding canopy, from hospital to hospice, and from mourning to memorializing when we have had the privilege and the honor of standing at your side, offering a hand, or a shoulder, or an embrace. As clergy, we are both the guardians of sacred traditions, as well as the caretakers of sacred communities, and congregations. There is profound meaning for us in those moments; they symbolize both the continuity of our communal life, and of life itself. And they mark the truest impact of the years spent in sacred service, and the greatest satisfaction and fulfillment in doing so, as well. page 2 ~ September/October

3 Embracing Temple Traditions It s hard to believe that summer is winding down, and the High Holy Days are just a few weeks away. At this time of year, I often think about my High Holy Day experiences in Houston, where I grew up. We belonged to a large Reform Congregation that was organized seven years before Temple Ohabai Sholom. The services were much shorter than what we have in Nashville, and there wasn t much Hebrew. We didn t have a Cantor until I was in college. The atmosphere was somewhat reserved. When we moved to Nashville, we knew little about the local Jewish community. The Temple was conveniently located, and all of our Jewish friends were members. We attended a few services, enjoyed our Ray Berkt experience, and decided to join. Although I was fond of my synagogue in Houston, it didn t take me long to realize how special Temple Ohabai Sholom is. Interestingly, I have heard the same thing from many others who have moved here from out of state. We have a very warm, inviting environment. Our clergy, staff, and lay leaders make a concerted effort to engage all members and provide a welcoming atmosphere. The Temple has more of a warm and fuzzy feel to it than any congregation I have either belonged to or visited. I think that much of this is attributable to our high level of membership participation, which is much greater than that of most Reform temples. In addition, the number of activities and services that we provide equal and sometimes surpass those offered by much larger congregations. It s not surprising that we are the envy of many in the Reform Movement. The High Holy Days exemplify the good things that we try to do as a congregation. Whether it s the actual religious services we offer, the New Year telephone calls made by our Board members to all congregants, or the active participation of our lay members in the religious services, we make an effort to reach out to our members and involve them in our Temple community. This year will be The Temple s one hundred and sixty-first Rosh Hashanah. I don t know what our Congregation s first High Holy Days were like, or what our founders anticipated for the future, but I am confident that there have been plenty of positive changes through the years. You will notice more changes during the High Holy Days this year. The Building and Maintenance Committee, under the supervision of its chairmen, Alan Cooper and Charles Krivcher, will be reintroducing ushers for our services. The second change involves the reception that was held at the home of The Temple president in the middle of the afternoon following the Rosh Hashanah morning service. The reception tradition started many years ago and was originally hosted at the home of the Chief Rabbi. This was during a time when the Chief Rabbi lived in a house that was owned by The Temple. When The Temple discontinued the practice of providing a home for the Chief Rabbi, the venue for the reception changed to the home of the president. This year, in an effort to engage more congregants, and to make the reception more convenient for our members, it will be held at the Temple, immediately following the morning Rosh Hashanah. The Temple officers and clergy will be present, and our members will have the opportunity to gather for as long as they like. It will be a simple affair. Light refreshments will be served in the main hallway outside the sanctuary. Hopefully, you will have the time to linger a while and schmooze a bit. As Temple president, I am proud of what we have accomplished, and I am grateful for those whose hard work and dedication have gotten us where we are today. I am also mindful of the future, and the many challenges that lie ahead. Like those who came before us, it is our responsibility to do what we can to ensure that Temple Ohabai Sholom continues to flourish, remains a welcoming home to all Jews, and retains its stature in the Reform Movement. With your help, I know that we can make it so. I hope the coming year will bring you much peace, happiness, and good health. L Shana Tovah! The Temple Family s Annual Rosh Hashanah Reception will be hosted by The Temple Officers & Clergy at The Temple following the Morning on Monday, September 17 th New members and long-time members alike are cordially invited to celebrate the New Year at this annual Rosh Hashanah gathering. 7 High Holy Day Terms Cheshbon Nefesh: A term that literally means an account of the soul. During the Hebrew month of Elul, the month immediately preceding the Jewish New Year, many Jews take it upon themselves to conduct this inventory of all their actions, thoughts and behaviors during the last year, and contemplate on how to do better next year. The list should contain both times we acted our best, and times we could improve. Tashlich: From the Hebrew meaning to cast away, this is a ceremony where we symbolically cast away our sins into running water, using bread crumbs. Our Tashlich service begins after Rosh Hashanah morning services, as we walk together to our creek to cast away our sins with readings, music and contemplation. Teshuvah: From the Hebrew meaning return or repentance, this concept is at the center of the High Holidays. With contemplation, hard work and sincerity, we can always return to the right path, the right way, even when our actions have led us astray. Admitting our faults and failings, we can begin anew. The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yamei Teshuvah the Ten Days of Repentance. Together with Tefilah (prayer) and Tzedakah (justice, or charity), Teshuvah is a way to achieve the High Holiday blessing for a good, sweet year. Selichot: Literally meaning forgiveness, it is a time intended for self-evaluation and reflection required to fully engage oneself in the High Holidays. We reach out to those we have wronged, intentionally or not, and ask for forgiveness. We also grant forgiveness to those seeking it from us. Our Selichot service and program is Saturday evening, September 8 th. Shabbat Teshuvah: This is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It literally means the Shabbat of Return, or Repentance. Words reflective of the High Holidays are inserted into the prayer service. Kever Avot: Literally, the graves of our ancestors, this is the Cemetery between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Judaism reminds us that the introspection that we are required to do cannot be accomplished without looking back to those who have had an effect on determining our lives. Our Cemetery is Sunday, September 23 rd at The Temple Cemetery. Kol Nidre: Aramaic for all vows, these are the opening words of the formula for the cancellation of vows. It is recited on Yom Kippur eve, set to a haunting melody. As we reflect on past behavior, we understand that sometimes we make personal vows and oaths unwittingly or rashly. This prayer annuls those personal vows for the coming year, even as we still attempt to be more careful of our words and promises made. Yizkor: From the Hebrew meaning remembrance this is part of the Yom Kippur afternoon service when we take time to call to mind those loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose memories and influence remain in our lives. Neilah: Literally meaning to close or lock, this is the name given to the final service on Yom Kippur, immediately after Yizkor. Symbolically, the Book of Life is sealed at this time, as the final blast of the shofar is sounded and the fast is broken. Our Book of Remembrance A special thank you to those who volunteered to help with the Book of Remembrance mailing! 9 Attention! Attention! Attention! Attention! High Holy Days Important Information Parking and Security for the High Holy Days Each year, congregants for High Holy Day services are greeted at The Temple by uniformed officers and professional parking attendants. Security this year will be provided through a combined effort of public and private personnel who are familiar with our Temple buildings and grounds. The usual procedures will be in place for security, traffic control and member safety. Please note the following very important items: 1. Leave for services earlier than usual in order to arrive in advance of service time. There are two entrances to The Temple. Drop-off is available only at the glassed-infoyer entrance for those who need it. A Reminder About Seating Sanctuary, chapel and auditorium seating will be in place to accommodate over 1,200 members and guests to each of the services for the High Holy Days. As in the past, there are no tickets required for entry into the services, nor is there reserved seating. We ask your cooperation through the direction of the ushers and staff in helping to maintain the dignity and decorum of our services. Please help them by adhering to a few simple but very important rules: 1. You may not save seats in the sanctuary except for the driver while he/she is parking. If you wish to sit together, you may gather in the foyer and enter together or you may save a few seats in the chapel or auditorium. 2. Overflow parking will be available on the Belle Meade Plantation property. 3. If you park at the Plantation, we ask that you enter by way of The Temple parking lot but exit only from the Belle Meade Plantation exit on Leake Avenue following services. 4. The Temple driveway will be one way during our largest services. Please follow the posted signs that will direct you around the building. The traffic controllers will direct you as to where and how to park and exit. Please do not try to back into parking spaces, this causes traffic to back up. Your patience will be greatly appreciated! 5. Additional disabled & elderly parking will be available close to the building. Look for signs. 6. Please remember that our neighbors will likely be less critical of the traffic congestion if we park on the street rather than in their yards and/or driveways. Over the past two years the Belle Meade Police Department has towed cars blocking city traffic during services. BE WARNED, we cannot interrupt services to announce imminent towing. Please... Drive Slowly! Do Not Park on the Grass! Please Carpool... Follow Directions! 2. Please do not leave empty spaces between you and the person next to you! It is critical that we fill all available seating so that everyone who wants to attend can be accommodated. 3. A special seating section will be available for the convenience of persons with physical disabilities. 4. No one may enter the sanctuary, chapel or auditorium when the congregation is standing. The staff knows when to seat latecomers. Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress. 5. Please be considerate of others while waiting in the foyer prior to the start of the next service. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. The noise from those waiting can easily be heard in the sanctuary. The speakers in the foyer area will enable you to listen to services in progress. 6. So that everyone is assured of having a prayerbook, kindly return yours to the ushers and staff in the lobby at the end of the service. If you own a copy of the Gates of Repentance prayerbook, we encourage you to bring it. For information about Babysitting see page 15 Some people find the temperature in the sanctuary can fluctuate during services. We recommend you bring a wrap or other garment to insure your comfort throughout services. September/October ~ page 9

Recently, NALC was selected as one of two programs in the nation to work with a national support program, Proliteracy, to develop a citizenship education component for adult immigrants and is operating 10 citizenship classes across the city. Tutoring is also a free service to the learners. The National Adult Literacy Council received funding from Social Action Allocations in 2012 to purchase books, which are free to the learner. Habitat for Humanity: Unity Build During Shabbat services on Friday, September 7 th, there will be an opening ceremony for the entire multi-denominational build. This extra-meaningful service will include clergy from many of the groups that are participating with us! Temple s day to work on the Build is Sunday, September 23 rd. They will be put to great use this winter. Campus for Human Development Tour: October 14 Ever wonder what the new Campus for Human Development facility is like (it s very impressive!) and what services they offer? Here s your chance to find out! We re going to caravan there on Sunday, Oct. 14 th, departing at 9:30 am. We ll tour the facility, learn a bit about their programs, and talk with one of their residents about what it s like to go from living on the street to a transitional program like RITI, before leaving in plenty of time to get back before the end of religious school at 11:30 am. all are welcome. If you re interested, please contact Lori-Jene Brazier at lorijene@gmail.com or (mobile) by Thursday, October 11 th. 13 On Friday, October 12th we will be honoring our long term members with a special 7:30 pm Union Prayer Book Shabbat Yom Kippur Food Drive 394,860 people in mid-tennessee don t know where their next meal is coming from. Bring in the non-perishable bags of food on Yom Kippur if you d like. We ll have the Second Harvest truck in our parking lot. However, there is another option to consider. Every dollar donated to Second Harvest provides 4 meals to hungry men, women and children. So your tax-deductible donation of $25 will provide 100 meals, $50 will provide 200 meals, and with $100 they can provide 400 meals. Checks made out to Second Harvest will be accepted at Temple on Yom Kippur, or you can go online to Second Harvest s donation site dedicated to Temple donations. The link for the virtual food drive is: Two of our youngest congregants learn the meaning of giving by shopping for Second Harvest. September/October ~ page 13

14 Religious School by Lynda Gutcheon I want to begin with the obvious! HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR CHILD FOR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL YET???? If not, please call our office and we will send you the information so you can register online. Next, you should have received, via , your child s class list and all the curriculum materials for the upcoming year. You may have noticed that our theme this year is The Year of Honoring Our Mothers and Fathers. For the past twelve years, our Religious School has centered on a specific theme. We have tried to bring those themes into our individual class curriculums and into our congregation as well. We have looked outward into our world and inward to our congregation. This year we hope to look into our souls and our beings. None of us can escape the impact our parents have on our development. As parents we are always giving our children advice, words of wisdom and the dos and don ts of life. One of my favorites is by Eleanor Roosevelt, Do one thing every day that scares you. However, this year, we hope to include our children into our journey of life in a different way. Our goal is to create a concrete awareness of what it means to Honor Ones Parents. We have many exciting and meaningful programs planned and we hope you will participate with your children and watch as they struggle with the notion of this theme even as they roll their eyes and plug their ears at us when we offer instruction and guidance to them. I invite the entire congregation to join us on Food Truck Sundays during the year. You will notice specific information about these congregational community events in the upcoming handouts, s and The View. As a new year approaches, I wish you all good health, peace and may you all be written in the Book of Life for a happy and meaningful year. 15 If you haven t had a chance to see the Temple Preschool lately, you might not recognize the classrooms. The teachers, who took their inspiration from our week of workshops and a field trip to Highland Plaza United Methodist Preschool (a Reggio Emilia inspired school located in Chattanooga), literally transformed their environments to reflect a new child-centered approach to learning. By providing a variety of materials and experiences as curriculum, and watching how children react to their surroundings, the teachers learned that they could begin to explore how each child develops and how they could support each stage of their students journey by expanding and enhancing their interests. Out went the plastic toys, bins and furniture. In came fabrics, natural wood, tools, and baskets. A concentration on real items pertaining to nature and art instead of whistle-blower toys became a priority. A new coat of paint and a focus on how light and shadows, mirrors, and transparent colors enhanced the ambiance of the classroom were integrated into the classrooms and soon changes occurred right before our eyes. In only a few days, the rooms became more inviting and welcoming, challenging the children to learn more about textures, science, or building with wooden blocks, ramps, cones, and tubes. The children explored paint by mixing their own color palettes and then painted on surfaces using their own original creations. Parents also contributed by mixing their child s paint and naming the Children First Preschool by Corye Nelson & Jan Huettner color that they created for their child. It was an unbelievable start to a new year and if the first few weeks of school are any indication, the children have been fully engaged and interested in their new surroundings. As we continue to study and explore this new journey, we have also engaged the talents and experience of a new curriculum teacher who will not only provide expertise and support to our classroom teachers, but will help us reflect on the best way to document our findings and facilitate new activities from classroom explorations. Lindsey Lienert enters the Temple Preschool with an MA in educational psychology with a concentration in early childhood education. She has had experience as a teacher of three- and four-year-olds at the renowned Blue School in Manhattan, New York and has extensive experience as a mentor teacher incorporating co-constructivism, the Reggio Emilio Philosophy and Social- Emotional learning into the daily curriculum. We are thrilled that she will be an important resource and part of our program. We hope to keep you informed as we continue to learn more about this new and exciting path of education and invite you to stop by and see all of our positive changes as we evolve and make a conscious decision to put the interests and interactions of our children first. High Holy Day Babysitting The Temple will offer High Holy Days babysitting ONLY for the following services: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Morning, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning for the children of Temple members up to age 5 for a nominal fee of $10.00 per child, per service. Our goal is to provide the kind of care you expect for your children. To do so, we need your cooperation. The size of our membership and the increased demand for this service, as well as our desire to provide wellorganized, safe care for the children, require that the following procedures be followed: 1. Parents must be attending services in The Temple building. 2. Babysitting is by reservation only. (The deadline for Erev Rosh Hashanah & Rosh Hashanah Morning is September 13 th & the deadline for Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning is September 21 st ). No exceptions! 3. Children arriving without a reservation will not be able to remain in the babysitting area. 4. Please pack a snack or other items your child may need during the babysitting times. To reserve a spot please contact the Preschool at or preschool@templenashville.org September/October ~ page 15
