1 Kol Shalom Congregation Ohabai Sholom - February 2010 A.-J. Levine Lecture Series Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Correcting Misunderstandings & Celebrating our Common Past February 10 th Gender: What were Jewish women s lives like in early Judaism? How did the incorrect view of early Judaism develop? February 17 th Theology: The Old Testament Days of Wrath vs. the New Testament Deity of Love. How did this false but popular theological claim develop? February 24 th Law: How does a more accurate understanding of first-century Jewish practices & beliefs both correct unfortunate sterotypes & serve to inspire both Jews & Christians today? Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, prominent Jewish New Testament scholar, is E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Department of Religious Studies, and Graduate Department of Religion. Dr. Levine is a prolific writer and contributor to professional journals. A self-described "Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Protestant divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt," Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies. 1

2 We continue to celebrate the wonderful year of learning opportunities at The Temple, including a series of very special lectures by guest scholars and Rabbis to our community. In recent months, we ve had Rabbi Michael Klein-Katz speak to us about religious pluralism in the state of Israel. We have heard Rabbi Burt Schueman describe Jewish life in Warsaw, Poland, including the dramatic success story of Beit Warzawa, the liberal congregation now flourishing in that city. Tina Wasserman, author of the new Jewish cookbook Entree to Judaism, shared her wonderful stories about the origins and evolution of Jewish cuisine around A Message from Rabbi Schiftan the world. Tim Wise, author of the book White like Me offered his honest assessments of race relations in this country, as well as in our own community. All of this, in addition to a regular series of ongoing classes here at The Temple. I would like to invite you to participate in two more extraordinary opportunities for Jewish Learning in February and March. I am delighted to inform you that Dr. A-J Levine, professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University, will be with us once again this year for what has become an annual tradition for our congregation. On the evenings of February 10, 17, and 24 from 7-8pm, Dr. Levine will be speaking on the topic Jewish-Christian Relations: Correcting Misunderstandings and Celebrating Our Common Past. Her command of the subject matter, combined with her outstanding sense Two Innovative Opportunities for Learning of humor and capacity for dramatic expression, should make for another wonderful year in this evolving series. Please invite your non-jewish neighbors and friends to join with you and us during these three evenings in February here at The Temple. Finally, please set aside the weekend of March 5-7 for our Scholar-in-Residence weekend with Professor Rifat Sonsino. He is without question a leading scholar in the area of Jewish Theology. Members of his family are part of this congregation and have allowed us the rare opportunity to have him come speak in our congregation. Further details can be found in this month s Kol Shalom. We look forward to having you with us as we continue another exciting and meaningful year of Jewish study and reflection together. A friend of mine called me the other day and asked if we could meet and talk about something she was interested in working on for Temple. When we sat down, she presented a carefully researched plan of how she would tackle this particular issue. She was clear in what she wanted to accomplish and determined to make it happen. I told her that she is a President s Dream! A volunteer who has an idea and is willing to find a way to make it work. A congregant who recognizes the value and importance of improving our spiritual home. As I told her, I am always happy to do what I can to help volunteers feel fulfilled and successful in their endeavors for The Temple. There are so many things that would not happen here were it not for our volunteers. And speaking of volunteers, the Temple Arts Festival (TAF) is just The Value of Giving around the corner. On April 10 th and 11 th, we will, once again, welcome artists from around the country as we turn the building into an art gallery. Volunteers have been hard at work making the preliminary plans for this, our main fundraiser. But more volunteers will be needed to work both the week leading up to the Festival, as well as during and after the event occurs. You will, no doubt, hear from those people who are in charge of recruiting volunteers (volunteers themselves!) in the weeks to come. I hope you will consider working a shift ( or two or three). It is a great way to meet people, see beautiful art, and help make this year s Festival a success. Another equally important way to make TAF a success is to support it financially. I have already begun talking to the members of the Board of Trustees (all volunteers!) about this. I have reminded them that because this is our major fundraiser, my hope is that each member make some financial contribution to TAF. I am hoping for 100% participation among Board members. I would be remiss if I did by Patty Marks not ask every member of the congregation to consider a contribution to our fundraiser. As I told the Board, we would welcome any contribution that you feel you can make. If what you can afford is $10, we would be happy to accept your $10. I sometimes hear that people feel like all we ever do at Temple is ask for money. I disagree. We do so much more. We have services, classes, exhibits, celebrations, namings, B nai Mitzvahs, weddings, funerals, Consecrations, Confirmations. We console the bereaved, take healing shawls to the sick, house the homeless all winter, and on and on. If you think that all we do is ask for money, the only thing you aren t paying is attention. Like every organization, school or club, we have a fundraiser in addition to dues. It is our only major fundraiser. And I hope you will consider making a contribution. There are many ways to give to our Temple home, and all are appreciated. 2

9 Three Star Report Card By Jan Huettner P L A Y S C H O O L The Temple Playschool recently received a formal notification from the state of Tennessee that we are once again a three star designated program. Three stars indicate that according to the state department of human services, the Temple Playschool represents the highest standard of care. This certification is based on the following criteria: director qualifications, professional development, compliance history, parent/family involvement, ratio and group size, staff compensation, program assessment, and business management. It is a very thorough process and we are always gratified and relieved when the evaluation has been completed. This team effort is a reflection of the dedicated teaching staff and the administration that work each day to provide the educational and developmental skills that are needed so that our young students will become independent and socially adjusted. We congratulate all of our teachers and our current students and parents for their continued support and participation in our program. We will continue to work and make improvements in our center to meet the challenging times ahead as we start a new decade. Family Day Programs at Temple Playschool (above)ms.
