Traditionally, this month is referred to as Mar-Cheshvan, Bitter Cheshvan, because it is the only month in the Jewish calendar which is entirely absent of holidays. But that emptiness and inactivity is only at face value; in fact, the month of Cheshvan is replete with study Rabbi Mackler and celebrating, doing and learning at The Temple. In an effort to take some of the bitterness out of this month, it has been heralded and transformed into Jewish Social Action month. In truth, The Temple s Social Action calendar is lled from the beginning of the year until its close. We are grateful for those in our community who lead the efforts of our many social action programs throughout the year. Our Temple has a full and remarkable history engaging in Social Action, beginning with The Temple Social Justice Committee s of cial establishment on April 18, 1961, to learn about and educate the community on Social Action. But the roots of action began earlier, during the struggle for Civil Rights. The Temple s Board of Directors granted Rabbis freedom of the pulpit, enabling messages of (even controversial) social justice to be preached on Shabbat. The Temple was strengthened and guided in our Social Action focus under the leadership of Rabbi Falk and our dedicated lay leaders who headed the Committee over the past 50 years. Alongside the hard work planning for and running various programs, the Committee elds requests from communal social service organizations for allocations, helping those non-pro t agencies meet their budgetary needs. Over time, more than 60 agencies have been assisted by the monies donated to our various social action funds at The Temple. Allocations are distributed to agencies that teach skills, provide basic needs, and support the values of The Temple and Reform Judaism. Many Temple members may be unaware of just how involved The Temple is in supporting our communal social service agencies on an annual basis. We are taking the time, each month, to highlight one such deserving agency that applied for and was granted an allocation. We cannot meet everyone s needs, nor can we ful ll every request. Each time, however, a donation is made to one of our Social Action Funds, we can do more. On page three of The View, Carol Fradkin, the chair of the Social Action Committee, highlighted our rst agency, Alive Hospice, which does so much good work for families in Nashville and The Temple. Please take the time to read about Alive Hospice and all they do. As we prepare to gather for Chanukah, feeling the warmth and glow of the candles surrounded by family and friends, let us remember to include our community in our giving, participating in our many on-going social action projects and supporting the causes of our partner organizations. Cantorial Search Committee News By Patty Marks The Search Committee has submitted The Temple s Application for Cantor Placement with the American Conference of Cantors (ACC). We now await resumes of interested candidates. As the resumes begin to come in, we will be evaluating each resume and interviewing, by telephone, each candidate whom we are interested in. As we move along in this process, we will be checking references, listening to samples of candidates voices and determining which candidates best t our vision for the next cantor of the congregation. Every member of this committee is focused on the future as we move ahead. I look forward to keeping you updated on the important work of this committee. page 2 ~ December

3 Get on Board I hope you will take an opportunity during the month of December to take advantage of some of the many activities and programs your Temple has to offer. Please join us on Friday, December 2nd, as we welcome back Rabbi Stephen Fuchs during our Shabbat Services. Rabbi Fuchs is currently President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Randy Goldstein I would like to invite you to join us Friday, December 16th for a Chanukah Congregational Shabbat and dinner. The members of our Junior Choir, led by Dennis Scott, will lead us in a medley of Chanukah songs. I am proud to inform you that your Social Action Allocation Committee, chaired by Ann Gilbert, presented this year s Social Action allocation to the Board of Trustees. The Social Action Committee recommended $15,000 be distributed to twelve different agencies. We should all feel proud that Temple supports so many worthwhile non-pro t agencies. The Temple Arts Festival is April and we are excited to announce Alice Zimmerman as this year s Honorary Chair. Please contact The Temple if you are interested in volunteering for our Annual Fundraiser. During the November Board of Trust Meeting Erin Zagnoev, along with Development Co-Chairs Cindy Stone and Carol Smith and their committee, presented plans for endowing your Temple s future for generations to come. Our plan is to establish a development program that everyone can participate in. In the coming months we look forward to sharing with you all of the wonderful opportunities that we can all be a part of, as we work towards ensuring a vibrant future for our congregation. Chanukah is the time of rededication. It s also the time for our 2012 Annual Giving Campaign. Please consider all that your Temple has to offer when considering your annual commitment. We have so much to be proud of, the programs and services we offer are made possible by your generous commitment. I am always happy to talk to anyone if you have any questions. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year. Social Action Allocation Highlight: Alive Hospice by Carol Fradkin Each month we will highlight an organization which receives funds through The Temple s Social Action Allocations. Alive Hospice was established 36 years ago by Rabbi Falk, Dr. David Barton and Dr. John Flexner. Alive Hospice received a $500 grant from The Temple in This organization provides loving care to people with terminal illnesses, support to their families, and services to the community in a spirit of enriching lives. According to the U.S. Census, One in 20 children experience the loss of a parent before they reach the age of eighteen. When grieving children do not get the help they need, it often leads to serious problems (e.g. depression, aggression, abuse of drugs and alcohol, health problems, high drop-out rates), which can escalate and affect the entire community. In 2011, we provided nancial support to help support a 3-day teen retreat, where participants meet other teens who have had similar experiences. Retreat activities are designed to give teenagers age-appropriate support, a safe environment in which to process and manage the feelings related to their loss, and an opportunity to learn healthy coping skills. 11 Nurturing The Temple Gardens As many of you know, our Tikkun Olam Classroom, formerly known as the Pre-Kindergarten Room, has been planting vegetables and herbs for the past several years. Their garden beds can be seen immediately as you drive up the driveway, past the beautiful fall leaves and trees that sprinkle the Temple s property. Our staff, parents, and students have worked extremely hard to provide a natural setting that enhances a life-long connection to the Earth and Ms. Dawn and Ms. Gladys, our classroom teachers, have worked diligently to help our children understand the importance of the work involved to grow and nurture these gardens. The following excerpts are from a letter written to our Religious School by Dawn Hazen: Greetings, The Tikkun Olam classroom has decided to return the nurturance of the 4x4 raised bed to the Religious School for its horseradish project. This bed was originally the Bat Mitzvah project of a Religious School student who, in turn, gave this to our classroom for maintenance. The soil has been well maintained with organic compost and crop rotation for the past two years. We decided that this bed would be a giving bed this past spring and it became our perennial herb garden. There are two additional raised beds that were donated to our classroom by our Pre-K families and we are excited about continuing the work we set out to do with these gardens. Preschool by Corye Nelson & Jan Huettner Having our children turn the soil, plant the seeds, water, weed, and harvest our gardens has been phenomenal. Children who have NEVER eaten anything green were picking fresh lettuce from our garden and ingesting it moments later. We want our children to feel a connection with the soil and to have an intimate knowledge of the source of their food. We are so very grateful for these beds as we requested permission for them for many years. The turning point came with the Religious School Bat Mitzvah project. From that moment on, we wanted to expand. We feel it is important for everyone to have a connection with the soil that sustains us all. Last spring, the 4x8 bed provided lettuce to three different families on a weekly basis. We also harvested snow peas, sweet peppers, tomatoes, and basil. Marigold owers adorned the bed. In the 8x8 bed we gathered carrots, zucchini, squash, beans, cucumbers, and blueberries. We have been good stewards of these beds. Most recently we planted garlic that will be harvested in late spring. We would love to expand our garden program and continue to work in conjunction with the Religious School. If you are interested in learning more about the Preschool s gardening project or helping with it in any way, please contact the Preschool of ce at page 11 ~December

12 Engaging the Next Generation Together with Vanderbilt Hillel & the Jewish Federation, the rst ever Young Adult Engagement professional was hired with the goal of engaging the emerging generation of young Jewish Adults in our community within the ages of 22 to 35. This professional spends one quarter of his time here at The Temple. The new Young Adult membership levels have helped to bring 22 new young adult congregants to The Temple, almost half of the 50 new congregants who joined in the last year. Educating our Children Ninety-nine percent of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students continue through Con rmation. Eighty percent of our 11 th & 12 th grade students stay on for Post Con rmation and this year our post con rmation class has 35 students. The Temple Preschool works to teach children about tikkun olam through many mitzvah projects. Last year the Preschool did a costume drive to help build a Purim Costume Library in our sister city, Hadera, in Israel. The kids also collected 135 pairs of pajamas to send to children in need through Scholastic s Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. A Place of Study & Exploration This year, our Women s Torah Study group celebrated its 10 th birthday. Our B nai mitzvah program is an individualized program that allows all students to be successful regardless of age. We have a wide variety of Adult Education & Scholars-in-Residence programs, which attract hundreds of members and our neighbors of other faiths. Favorite regular speakers are Professor A.-J. Levine and Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Supporting our Seniors Twice a month, Temple hosts the Golden Lunch Bunch, providing a meal, entertainment and fun for our seniors. Our Senior Services Coordinator makes on average 32 visits a month, bringing a bit of Temple to our homebound members. Meeting the Needs of our Congregants After work, school or play, you can join The Temple for Pre-service Oneg on the third Friday of the month, prior to our family service. This allows congregants of all ages the opportunity to share in the Oneg Shabbat experience before our services. Our Temple works to keep you informed. From our website to our This Week at The Temple, our monthly View to our new presence on Facebook, we are always in touch. Our Temple s Accomplishments: As we kick off the 2012 Annual Giving campaign, I hope that you have taken some time to enjoy our new Annual Giving publication. The booklet listed some of the many accomplishments of our Temple over the last year. Your Annual Giving makes all of this possible. As you send back your pledge card please take note of all that your gift helps the Temple to achieve. Below are the accomplishments that were provided in the publication. We have so much to be proud of: Strengthening our Temple Community This year more than 200 Temple Arts Festival volunteers came together for one project to help support the life of our Temple. This event raised over $45,000. Since November 2009, Meeting Room A has been the home of our Congregant Gallery. It has been an amazing place to see the incredible artistic talent of more than eighteen Temple members. With the support of 317 Temple families our High Holyday Memorial Book raised over $31,000 to help secure the continuing success of The Temple. Communal Partnerships Over the summer, in partnership with the Jewish Federation & the Gordon Jewish Community Center, The Temple hosted three Satellite Shabbats, bringing a communal Jewish Shabbat experience to Franklin, Hendersonville & East Nashville. The Temple Preschool, in partnership with the Jewish Federation and the other Jewish Preschools, brought PJ Library back to Nashville. This important program sends, for free, Jewish books and family conversation guides to Jewish children from six months to ve years old. Social Action Initiatives Our Social Action Committee assists Nashville agencies with hunger, housing and other social concerns. This year the Social Action committee presented checks to 12 agencies in the amount of $15,250. As part of Room in the Inn, from November to March, on Monday nights our Temple is home to 12 women from the Campus of Human Development. We offer warm meals and a safe place to stay. A group of 17 Temple members, organized by the Social Action Committee, made the trek to Birmingham and devoted a totals of 28 workdays to help with the tornado damage relief. Our Temple held a drive to collect suitcases, duf e bags and overnight bags. More than 100 items were collected and taken to the Davidson County Department of Children s Services for foster children to use. This has become an annual project. A Place of Study & Exploration With the start of our Conversion Conversations class we have had 25 participants. Twelve of them have either had their conversion ceremony or will in the coming weeks. The Temple is busy every day of the year. With either Lunch with the Rabbi, Women s Torah Study, Book Club, Mussar, FYI events, WELL events, Green Team projects, Knitting & Crocheting or Mah Jongg, there is always something going on at The Temple. page 12 ~ December

13 The Temple Rain Garden is Complete Freya Sachs If you walk to the end of our parking lot at The Temple, it looks a little different these days: there, you'll see our Rain Garden. Planted at the end of October by the Green Team, with the help of Patty Ghertner and with plants donated by the Cumberland River Compact, this small area of native plants will prevent a tremendous amount of water from running off our parking lot and into the creek below. Putting this together has been a community effort: the 5th grade Religious School Class conducted our in ltration tests to be sure this was a good spot to dig, and on both Saturday and Sunday we were joined by individuals, families, and children to create the space. We hope you'll take a look. If you are interested in involvement with the Green Team, have questions, or are wondering what is next, please contact Freya Sachs or Drew Herzog. December ~ page 13
