Our ritual committee, staff, and board are already hard at work planning meaningful High Holiday services and programs for kids and adults of all ages. I m so grateful to all of them for helping us come together as a community on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. It s easy to get busy with all of the details and planning that go into the holidays. Who s coming for dinner? What will we wear? What time do we have to be at services? How long will the shofar blasts be? What sermons will the rabbi give? And yet, as important as all of these questions are, our tradition invites us to see the month of Elul, the final month on the Jewish calendar, as an opportunity to take stock of our lives and engage in cheshbon hanefesh, an accounting of the soul. Are we living the kind of life we had hoped? Are we the kind of people we want to be? Where have we made mistakes in the past? Who do we need to apologize to in order to cleanse our souls? Who do we need to forgive to find peace in our hearts? In his book Jewish with Feeling, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi tells a story of his young daughter approaching him with a question. Abba (father), she asked. When you re asleep you can wake up, right? Yes, my child, he answered. So when you re awake, can you wake up even more? What a wonderful question! The goal of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is for all of us to wake up a little more, to emerge from the slumber of everyday life, to examine our life, and to be able to stand before God and our community wiping away the schmutz (dirt) of the past year and starting the new year on the right track. I invite you over the next few weeks to think about where you are in life and what changes you d like to make. Are you as kind and compassionate as you want to be? Do you have the job you want or have you settled for a paycheck? Are your relationships with your family and friends meaningful and satisfying? Are you as engaged at the shul as you want to be? Are you as connected to God, Judaism, and your heart, mind, and soul as you want to be? There aren t necessarily any right answers to these questions. Yet asking them can often provoke inner growth, and I encourage us all to use this time well. I welcome your thoughts on these questions my door is always open to those who want to discuss these or anything else with me. I wish us all a meaningful, spiritually nourishing High Holiday season. May we come away with a renewed sense of meaning, and may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year ahead. Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Ilan *Deceased

Here at Beth Sholom we offer several meaningful ways to honor and memorialize those who are special to us, and we wanted you to be aware of these opportunities. In our community court, you may have noticed the bronze plaques with the names in Hebrew and English, along with the date of birth and death of those who have passed on. These memorial plaques are currently on sale at $200, reduced from $250. The beautiful Tree of Life is in the foyer outside the chapel. An engraved leaf is a beautiful way to mark the occasion of a bar or bat mitzvah, a wedding anniversary, or a special birthday. The leaves are currently $50, reduced from $75. A book plate in a High Holiday prayer book can also be used to honor or memorialize someone special to you. Each book dedication is $36, reduced from $50. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, I would be happy to assist you. Just me at bsholomra@gmail.com. We also wanted to make you aware that the price of interment (burial) rights at our cemetery will increase in Please contact Steve Ziskind at stevehziskind@yahoo.com or for information about purchasing a plot. I hope to hear from you soon, as the reduced prices are in effect through December 31, Fondly, Rose Morrison RABBI ( ) *Arie Becker *Deceased
