Their role is to bring God s glory to humanity as seen in their interaction with humanity in Sacred Scripture. St. Michael protects God s people from the evil one s grasp. St. Gabriel brought God s message of salvation through appearing to Zachariah and Mary. St. Raphael is believed to be the angel who was the bearer of God s healing in many Old Testament stories. These three along with the whole hosts of angels serve to aid and protect the Kingdom of God on earth. We as the body of Christ and members of the Kingdom are thankful for their assistance. In like kind, there are a great many people who give of their time, talent and treasure to help ensure a successful picnic. On behalf of the parish of St. Philip the Apostle, I want to thank all of you who have contributed to the parish picnic this year. Many of you, especially the coordinators, have given hours of your time leading up to today, and the picnic would not happen without your efforts. 3 3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS OCTOBER 7, 2018 FIRST READING - Genesis 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. SECOND READING - Hebrews 2:9-11 Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. GOSPEL - Mark 10:2-16 The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. Pro-Life Corner...Wake up America! Pastoral Institute - Extended Program Introduction to the Bible and the Pentateuch is a sixweek course for all adult Catholics. 4 Next Sunday, October 7 is Respect Life Sunday: Respect Life Sunday is an opportunity for us to do what we are called to do each day: Pray for and speak out for life. We are encouraged to pray daily for an end to abortion and to pray for the right of ALL to be born. More than 4,000 abortions are performed in the United States every day. Such a callous view of life has given rise to such horrific practices as euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, cloning, embryonic stem cell research and other practices which defy the God-given moral order of life. Let us pray and be actively involved in writing our elected officials and asking them to oppose any legislation which destroys life. Sunday, Oct. 7 is National Life Chain Sunday. A time to publicly witness your belief in the sacredness of life from conception to natural death. Come to Evans Park Pavilion at 1:45 p.m. to select a sign and pray before going out on the street from 2-3 p.m. Mass Remembrance...If you wish to remember your loved ones at the celebrations of Eucharist on All Souls Day, please take an envelope, found at the entrances of the church. Fill it out and drop it into the collection basket. This is not for Mass intentions, but for remembrances in the prayers of the faithful at the Mass of All Souls. These envelopes will be available beginning next Sunday. From Scripture...Growing in Faith Mark 9:38-48 Be ruthless with sin... The disciples were jealous of an unfamiliar man who healed in Jesus name. It seemed that they were more concerned about losing the spotlight than in healing. Yet, we do the same thing when we refuse to participate in good works because the people are unfamiliar, those in charge don t do things the way we d like, or we fear our efforts won t get recognized. Competiveness and ego have no place in the Christian community. Jesus was very clear; we must be ruthless in removing sin from our lives. Giving up a relationship, job, or habit that keeps us from God may seem just as painful as cutting off a hand, but the consequences of our choices last forever. Being lukewarm toward Jesus is not possible. For whoever is not against us is for us. Not all of Jesus followers resemble each other or belong to the same groups. But all who are on Jesus side have the same goal to build up the kingdom of God. Our differences should never interfere with the work of the kingdom. News from the Cemetery Committee of Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery Please remember that only one flower arrangement and only one perpetual or solar light is permitted per grave space. No other items such as statuary, teddy bears, toys, memorabilia, etc., are permitted on or near the grave spaces. All graves will be cleaned and anything in violation will not be saved. Please do not add any new flowers until after October 15, in order that we may prepare the cemetery for All Souls Day. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting with the upkeep of the cemetery.
