Her life is the highest example for us to follow as we seek deep and perfect union with Jesus, and through Jesus, with the Father. From the conception of Jesus in her womb, Mary was perfectly unified with her son, and this bond was never broken nor chipped in any way. She remained by Jesus side no matter the circumstance nor the societal strain. Mary was present to hear much of his teachings and witness the miracles that came about from his hands. She even drew people s attention and focus to her son that they might experience God s grace through him. Her heart was pierced with sadness as she watched her son carry and then eventually die on the cross. We have a new rosary garden that has come to us with great timing because the rosary is the great instrument of prayer that we use to venerate and pray with the Blessed Mother. During this powerful prayer, we journey with Mary and reflect, as she did, on the redemption coming to man through Jesus the Christ. We call upon Mary with the words of the Archangel Gabriel, Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you, and those of Elizabeth, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. We are inviting Mary to be with us by these two phrases, and then we petition her intercession that we might live in union with God until we are called home to be with Him in eternity. Our reflection on the life of Christ with each mystery is our way today to be present with Jesus then. If done with the proper attitude of mind and heart, we cannot help but be drawn closer to Christ as he presents us to the Father. Let this month be a month that you lift up Mary in glorious splendor God has given her, and allow her to bring you to her son that he might work wonders in your life too. 3 FIRST READING - Acts 1:1-11 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." When they had gathered together they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven." SECOND READING - Ephesians 4:1-13 Brothers and sisters, I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS MAY 13, in a manner worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature to manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ. GOSPEL - Mark 16:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. Father Gary Janak, in commemoration of his 30 th anniversary of ordination, will be this year s honoree. The event will be held at The Cathedral Center in Victoria on May 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This event will raise funds to enable the Center to continue to offer reasonably priced counseling and spiritual direction. Month of Mary One of the best ways to honor Mary is to pray the rosary daily if possible, either as an individual, with your family, or with a group. Growing in Faith Mary brings us to her Son Mary s life on Earth was dedicated to bringing the Savior to humanity. Now that she is in Heaven, she continues to bring our concerns to her Son. Praying the Hail Mary is a wonderful way to honor our Heavenly Mother. Hail Mary, full of grace: Conceived without Original Sin, Mary s will and intellect were predisposed to holiness. Grace helped her to live a difficult life without sinning. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women: Mary was honored to be chosen as Jesus mother. Blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus. Mary knew how great Jesus would be but she also knew what the prophets wrote about how he would suffer and die. As his mother, she wanted to share his joy and his sorrow. Holy Mary, Mother of God. Mary loved her child even more that most parents because he was her Lord and Savior, too. Pray for us sinners. When Jesus took his last breaths on the Cross, Mary s job of being Mother of the Savior broadened to becoming Mother of the world. Now she cares for us. Now and at the hour of death. On earth, Mary brought her Son to us. Now she brings us to the heart of her Son. She prays for us always because that s what a mother does. Amen.
