May the blessing of the Christ child sustain you during the upcoming New Year. And many thanks to all the people who put in extra time to help elevate our praise of God: the many people who put forth great effort to beautify the church; the church grounds, and the rectory lobby; the choirs putting extra practice times; and the lectors, deacons, extraordinary ministers of holy communion, altar servers and hospitality who aided in making the Christmas Mass celebrations go smoothly. As we prepare to begin a new year I offer you a prayer to bless your time: Lord, you who live outside of time, and reside in the imperishable moment, we ask Your blessing this New Year's Day (Eve) upon Your gift to us of Time. Bless our clocks and watches, You who kindly direct us to observe the passing of minutes and hours. May they make us aware of the miracle of each second of life we experience. May these our ticking servants help us not to miss that which is important, while You keep us from machine-like routine. May we ever be free from being clock watchers and instead become time lovers. Bless our calendars, these ordered lists of days, weeks, and months, of holidays, holydays, fasts, and feasts all our special days of remembering. May the servants, our calendars, once reserved for the royal few, for magi, and pyramid priests, now grace our homes and our lives. May they remind us of birthdays and other gift-days, as they teach us the secret that all life is meant for celebration and contemplation. Bless, Lord, this new year, each of its 365 days and nights. Bless us with new moons and full moons. Bless us with happy seasons and a long life. Grant to us, Lord, the new year's gift of a year of love. Amen. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made and stopped over the place where the child was. known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH 4. From Scripture Look for the Lord. Luke 2:22-40 To the uninformed observer, Jesus birth was unremarkable and his family was quite ordinary. When it came time to present Jesus in the temple, his parents couldn t afford the customary offering of a lamb and gave two pigeons as the offering of the poor instead. As faithful Jews, they did what was required by their faith to thank God for the gift of their child. Yet, when Joseph and Mary presented their new baby in the temple, Simeon immediately recognized him as the Messiah. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, he prophesied that Jesus was to be a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel (Luke 2:32) Simeon was not alone in recognizing the Lord in the temple. Anna was also filled with the Holy Spirit. Her faith in God s promises gave her hope. The hope God places in our hearts gives us a desire for the kingdom of Heaven. The Holy Spirit reveals the presence of the Lord to those who want to know him, to receive him, and to happy with him forever. St. Philip the Apostle Bible Study Forgiven: The Transforming Power of Confession Have you ever received a wake-up call that inspired you to make a change in your life? Maybe it was something significant like a health issue that forced you to make better choices. Or perhaps a comment from a friend convinced you to take a difference course of action on something. When we go off course in life, God often sends us a wake-up call to draw us back. But sometimes it s difficult even painful to stop, listen, and turn around. Thankfully, God doesn t ask us to do it on our own. He not only calls us home, but he also walks with us every step of the way. Please join us in discovering the merciful way that God seeks us out when we have sinned and calls us back to himself. This study will help us recognize the beauty of the Rite of Penance and the transformative power of the grace God offers us in this sacrament. This five week study begins the week of Jan. 8, All classes are held at the St. Philip s Meeting House. Class options are 10 am, am, 6:30 pm, and 9 am. All students will receive their materials for this study in their classroom on the first day of the class.
