This event marks the beginning of the Church with the apostles charged with Her care. However, they were not left without help and guidance. The Spirit that descended upon the apostles has remained with them and their successors throughout the life of the Church. We have the same Spirit guiding us today as was guiding the apostles when they stepped out to bring the faith to all nations and every peoples. God s Spirit will remain with us until the end of time as Jesus promised: I will be with you until the end of the age (Matthew28:20). I will ask the Father to send the Spirit of Truth, your advocate, to be with you always (John14:16). Therefore, we need not worry about which step we, as a Church, are to take, for God attends to our needs along the way He puts out before us. We need only to submit to the Spirits promptings. We also have the model of the Church in Mary whom we venerate in a special way throughout this month. Many times, in the liturgical calendar, the celebration of Pentecost falls during this month, and appropriately so. Mary as the model of the Church, is the greatest human example of submitting to the Spirit s promptings. She, throughout her life, sought to follow God s will and please Him in everything. When He sent His messenger to announce His will that she be the mother of His Son, Mary answered in the only way her spirit would allow: I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Mary then is the great example of giving oneself over to God s will and entrusting oneself to Him who is with us in His love. The Church as a whole and in its parts we together as one and as individuals are called to submit to the Spirit entrusting ourselves to the Him for He has come upon us and will remain with us always. By this submission we know the love and protection of God the Father and can hope in one day living eternally with Him in His Glory. 3 NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS MAY 27, FIRST READING - Deuteronomy 4:32-34,39-40 Moses said to the people: "Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments SECOND READING - Romans 8:14-17 Brothers and sisters: For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, "Abba, Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. GOSPEL - Matthew 28:16-20 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. that I enjoin on you today, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever." in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." Key Scriptural Passage: Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. In the words of Pope Paul VI, May is a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God s merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother s throne. We all know what it s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation, Today, this is no less true for us. From Scripture John 20:19-23, Jesus Gives Us The Holy Spirit. In this Gospel, St. John tells of Jesus appearances to his apostles after the Resurrection. These events were the beginning of the birth of the Church. First the apostles were in the upper room with the door and windows closed and locked. Yet Jesus appeared in their midst. After he showed them his wounds they recognized him. That tells us something about his resurrected body. After Jesus rose from the dead he had a glorified body. He wasn t limited by the physical world and he wasn t immediately recognized even by those to whom he was close. That s a foretaste of what we can expect when we receive our glorified bodies at the end of time. Second, he breathed on the apostles. Jesus said to them, Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and who sins you retain are retained. In Scripture the breath of God was symbolic of his Spirit. Jesus was giving them the Holy Spirit. After receiving the Holy Spirit, the apostles were given the authority to forgive sins. That was the establishment of the Sacrament of Penance.
