This feast day is celebrated the day after the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. The adjacent placement of these two feast days signify the closeness of the sacrifice of Jesus the Son of God and the sorrow Jesus mother endured alongside her son. Moreover, the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross is celebrated first for its primacy in nature. The Feast of the Triumph of the Cross brings to mind a challenge many Catholic received from our non-catholic Christian brothers and sisters. One such person may ask: Why does the Catholic Church insist on keeping Jesus on the cross? Don t Catholics believe that Jesus is not on the cross anymore but risen from the dead? How would you answer this inquiry? What follows are thoughts to consider when formulating and giving your answer. First, we absolutely believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and his resurrection begins the promise of our resurrection. However, the cross was the instrument by which Jesus entered death to rise from it. We cannot have a resurrection without a crucifixion. Furthermore, the crucifix reminds of the passion Jesus endured for our sakes. Second, we are saved by Jesus Christ not the cross. Salvation is not about the cross, but about whose cross. Many people died by crucifixion, but when this instrument of torture is coupled with the body of Christ, it takes on a distinct meaning redemption of humanity. In other words, the cross is significant to Christians because Jesus gave of his life on it, the one for the many. Third, Jesus act on the cross was a sacrifice for our transgressions. He was the sacrificial lamb for the expiation of our sins. As St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:7 (and paralleled in 1Peter1:18-19): For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. The Jews spiritually laid their sins upon a sacrificial animal and then the sacrifice of that animal was the recompense for those sins. Jesus took the sins of us all upon himself, and in dying took on the punishment of those sins that we might not die but live in him who was raised from the dead. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 FIRST READING - Wisdom 2:12,17-20 The wicked say: Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him. SECOND READING - James 3:16-4:3 Beloved: Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess Key Scriptural Passage: Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. Questions for Discussion: Adult: Why should faith always lead to good works? May they have access to education and work in their own countries. New Altar Server Training Save the Date... Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or Sunday, October 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Parents, please stay for the first 30 minutes of the training. But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.
