The turnout was very impressive and encouraging. Thank you all for showing up in your great numbers as we prayed together and professed to our small community here in El Campo, the greatness of Christ, the King of the Universe. Thus, bringing to a close another Liturgical Year. We begin a new season...the Season of Advent from the Latin 'Adventum' which simply means to come. A time to Prepare for the coming of the Lord. Many of us would answer that it is the coming of the birth of Christ at Christmas day. But Jesus had been born already two thousand years ago in Bethlehem. This Advent is not only the coming of Jesus during Christmas day but also his coming at the last day, we call it Parousia or His second coming by which He will no longer save us but judge us. When we are expecting a very important person to come, a particular reality called waiting is very important. When we wait, we feel anxious, uneasy, impatient and unsure if that person will come. And so waiting is one of the biggest realities of life. And there are so many 'waitings' in life. There is a waiting at table for food to be served. There is waiting for the night to fall. There is waiting for the sun to rise. There is waiting for graduation, payday and publication of those who passed the exams. There is waiting for healing, for the pain to stop and many more. Before we became priests, this motto 'Be Prepared' was also unconsciously used in the Seminary. And as seminarians, we were formed rigidly to prepare for pastoral work in the future like parish administration, teaching, counseling, liturgy and many more. Because I believe in that there is no instant priest, or instant Christian. We are going to undergo a process by ourselves. There are certain things we cannot borrow at the last minute. Character for example, is something we cannot buy or borrow like a dress for a very special occasion. We have to learn this by ourselves. And so while waiting for the coming of the Lord let us prepare our hearts and minds for His coming. May you have a grace filled Advent Season. God bless. Fr. 3 3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS DECEMBER 9, 2018 FIRST READING - Baruch 5:1-9 Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God forever: wrapped in the cloak of justice from God, bear on your head the mitre that displays the glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth your splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice, the glory of God s worship. Up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights; look to the east and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by God. Led away on foot by their enemies they left you: but God will bring them back to you borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones. For God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and that the age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God. The forests and every fragrant kind of tree have overshadowed Israel at God s command; for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory, with his mercy and justice for company. SECOND READING - Philippians 1:4-6,8-11 Brothers and sisters: I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work Key Scriptural Passage: Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. (Luke 21:36) Questions for Discussion: Adult: What have been the strengths of your prayer life? What habit of prayer could you strengthen during this Advent season? Child: What prayers will you say each day and each week during Advent? Pro-Life Corner John the Baptist, while still in the womb of Elizabeth, recognized Jesus in the womb of Mary and leapt for joy. This Advent season may we recognize Jesus as our Savior and be open to his joy, peace, and love. in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. GOSPEL - Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 4 Suggestions for Celebrating the Season of Advent: Attend daily Mass. Attend Eucharistic Adoration. Read the Bible, both personally and as a family. Pray the rosary, perhaps before bedtime or in the car on the way to school, work, or shopping. Pray the rosary as a family. Take time to assist someone in need. Fast. Turn off the television at least once a week, even for just a few hours. Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Season of Advent: Rest Stops for a Rushed People Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while, Jesus counseled his disciples when they returned from their first mission trip. (Mk 6:31). The disciples were full of excitement, reporting all the wonderful things they had done. Jesus advice: Calm down, get away from the crowds, rest, be quiet for a while. In these weeks before Christmas, Jesus advice is especially fitting. Life is hectic. We are overloaded, frantic to get everything done before Christmas. Advent is the Lord s call to us to come away by yourself and rest a while. Advent is a time for waiting, a time for quiet contemplation, a time to sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel instead of Christmas carols. We wait, not for presents on Christmas day or even family get-togethers, but for Jesus. We remember Israel s wait for Jesus birth into the world. We wait as individuals for Jesus coming into our hearts. We wait for his coming at the end of time. We wait. Prayer for Advent Lord Jesus, stir up my heart this Advent with a lively desire for your coming. Though I am tempted to settle for the illusions of happiness, strengthen me to seek the real thing in you. Amid the sometimesfrantic pace of preparation for Christmas, give me a joyful sense of your presence. When I am faced with the darkness of suffering, remind me that you were born because we desperately needed a Savior and that we have your promise of eternal life. Come and See! Single Catholic women 18 to 40 years of age are invited to come meet nuns (Sisters) and examine their call to make Jesus, the Incarnate Word, known and loved. Watching and Waiting The Greek word kairos, translated into English as time, refers to uncommon time, within which uncommon events occur. Kairos is God s time. Because there was no way of knowing, in the un-chronicled time of God, when the Lord will return, Christians are admonished to watch! In the Gospel reading for the First Sunday of Advent, the command watch is repeated three times. Believers, who are watching for God, are like the servants in the parable who remain behind when the owner of the house leaves to travel abroad. The servants are not to wait idly for the owner s return, nor are Christians to wait idly until the Lord returns. They are to perform their regular duties and be watchful. Interestingly, the four periods of time that are listed in the parable as possibilities for the Lord s return evening, midnight, cockcrow, and dawn are the four night watches of the Roman military. Like soldiers, Christians are exhorted to stand the watch and not be caught asleep. The day of the Lord is not simply something that will happen at the end of time. Rather, we need to be watchful to see how every day of our faith lives is the day of the Lord. We all wait. Whether it be in traffic, in the checkout line at the supermarket, or on the telephone, waiting is simply part of life. Advent is a season for believers to patiently watch and wait for the God of surprises. God is always simultaneously present and elusive, but watching and waiting for God is always worth it. Family Focus...Shine a Light for Christ.. Traditionally, Advent begins on the first of the four Sundays before Christmas, with the lightning of a purple candle set in a wreath, accompanied by prayers, and sometimes, song. On the Second Sunday of Advent, two purple candles are lighted. On the Third Sunday of Advent, two purple and a pink candle are lighted. And on the fourth Sunday, all four candles burn. Make time each day during Advent to light the candle (s) for that week. Pause to meditate on and pray about the day ahead or behind you. As you watch the flame leap and dance, consider whether you live as a light in the world, shining Jesus bright and steady love through the clutter and consumerism.
