CHAT section As Lent has as its focus penitence, a common practice is receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Lord, Jesus Christ, gave us a wonderful gift in his divine mercy. Upon meeting the apostles after the resurrection, Jesus offers them peace and then grants them authority to forgive sins in his name. Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them (John 20:19-23). It is in the Sacrament of Reconciliation where we bring our sins and meet the Lord who eagerly awaits our coming and willingly forgives our contrite heart. From him we also receive what we truly desire, the grace to live a renewed life in him by his Spirit. We pray for this very renewal with Psalm 51: A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit. Do not drive me from before your face, nor take from me your holy spirit. Restore to me the gladness of your salvation; uphold me with a willing spirit (Verses 12-14). Finding strength with a renewed heart, freed from sin and its bonds, we step out in lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love to receive the Sacrament that brings us life the Eucharist. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation we grow more in union with the body of Christ, the Church, and closer to our head, Christ Jesus. This deeper union aids us to break former patterns of sin and grow strong in the virtuous life through the working of the Holy Spirit. This reality further heightens the joy of the Sacrament, because we are not only forgiven of our past sins and then left to our own devices to go and try to avoid sin in the future. We have the power of the Holy Spirit and the support of our brothers and sisters in the body. We can overcome the temptations and sins that seem to plague our life. I often remind people about the essential truth of the Sacrament. From the moment we allow temptation to become sin in our life, God desires we seek forgiveness and come to him for reconciliation. There is nothing the Lord will not forgive if we but approach him with a contrite heart. May this Lent help you to grow in contrition of your sins, seek forgiveness and reconciliation, and strengthen you in virtue. 4 Taking Up Our Cross And Following Christ We need Lent. In the midst of our busy lives, with worldly forces and temptations working hard to distract us from the call of Christ, the weeks of Lent are a gift. As we fast, pray, and extend our hands to the poor, we are imitating Christ, joining ourselves more closely to him. He suffered and sacrificed; so do we. He lives in eternal joy; so will we, as we follow him in hope. CCE Dates To Remember April 14: First Communion Rehearsal at 9:00 a.m. April 15: First Communion Mass at 12:00 Noon. Reflections for Second Sunday of Lent He was transformed before them - Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him up the mountain where he was transfigured before them. When the experience was over, Jesus told them not to say anything about what they saw until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept silent, but the three of them couldn t help but talk to themselves about what rising from the dead could mean. As Catholics in a modern world, we can still empathize with the disciples confusion. Like them, we don t have any scientific understanding of what occurred to Jesus and we discuss what resurrection will really mean for us. The Transfiguration is a powerful reminder that death is not the end of life. If death meant complete annihilation, then Elijas and Moses would not have appeared with Jesus. In this way the Transfiguration foreshadows the Resurrection. Although the apostles didn t understand what was happening at the time, later, when the Son of Man had risen from the dead, they were able to understand what the Transfiguration meant. During the second week of Lent, we are asked to think about how we can be transformed through the power of the risen Lord, and we are reminded that one day, we too, will be resurrected. Points to Ponder...What would I like transformed in my life by Easter? As I look over my life, what are some areas where God has already transformed me? Give thanks for those transformations and for those yet to come. What is one sacrificial action I can perform this week? Easter flower envelopes will be available this weekend for those wishing to offer flowers in remembrance of their loved ones. You may drop in the collection basket or bring to the rectory. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH 4. What Am I Doing For Lent This Year? Lent is a time for spiritual renewal. Such renewal may very well also lead to a renewal in our relationships with family members, friends, co-workers and fellow parishioners. Lenten renewal, in fact, could very well be the opportunity we are seeking, to live a more healthy life spiritually, physically, and emotionally. So, what are you doing for Lent this year: Here are a few suggestions... Participate more regularly in Sunday and weekday Mass. Join a Disciples on the Journey group in the parish. Deepen your prayer life, through the use of daily Bible reading and the praying of the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Attend Stations of the Cross each week or privately reflect on them. Pray together with your spouse and other family members. Fast from certain types of food, eating less at mealtime or, if your health permits, fasting on bread and water. Turn off the radio, television, computer, video games, and other electronic devices once a week or at least for a few hours, during the week. Become more involved in service, by visiting a homebound person or someone in the nursing home. Engage in acts of compassion and generosity toward others. Be more careful in what you say and how you say it, when speaking to your loved ones. Spend a few minutes each day in quiet reflection. Make a daily examination of conscience. Seek God s forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Spend more time with my family in prayer and play.
