What is your most desired aspiration in life? Would this deep desire happen to be: to become a Saint? It is normal to think that the Saints went through life as if already in Heaven, and to aspire to emulate their holiness seems like an insurmountable task. The stories of their lives often tell of the virtues they exhibited so, when we read their life s story, we can easily put them on a higher plain than us from the beginning. In reality, they were just as human as everybody else. There was nothing superhuman about them. They lived in this world just as you and I do. They struggled against worldly pressures and thoughts of inadequacy giving into them at times along the way. The important thing to realize is that they picked themselves up every time and tried again to love as God loves. They did not lose the desire to be holy and fought for the saintly life. The Saints were not born with the halo on their head. They had to work hard at it and grow in holiness just as we do. St. Thérèse of Lisieux wrote of her own struggle between her desire to be a saint and her self-image in her autobiography, Story of a Soul: I have always wanted to become a saint. Unfortunately when I have compared myself with the saints, I have always found that there is the same difference between the saints and me as there is between a mountain whose summit is lost in the clouds and a humble grain of sand trodden underfoot by passers-by. Instead of being discouraged, I told myself: God would not make me wish for something impossible and so, in spite of my littleness, I can aim at being a saint. It is impossible for me to grow bigger, so I put up with myself as I am, with all my countless faults. But I will look for some means of going to heaven by a little way which is very short and very straight, a little way that is quite new. We must not allow worldly pressures or our own self-image get in the way of growing in virtue. Instead of comparing ourselves to the virtue the Saints grew into, let us utilize their stories to encourage our own growth toward sanctity. 3 3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS NOVEMBER 18, 2018 FIRST READING - Daniel 12:1-3 In those days, I Daniel, heard this word of the Lord: "At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace. "But the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament, and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever." SECOND READING - Hebrews 10:11-14,18 Brothers and sisters: Every priest stands daily at his ministry, offering frequently those same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat forever at the right hand of God; now he waits until his enemies are made his footstool. For by one offering he has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated. Where Key Scriptural Passage: Jesus said, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. (Mk 12:43-44) Questions for Discussion: Adult: What are you willing to give out of love for God that would be a hardship for you? Child: What would you be willing to give up for someone else? Readings For The Week Monday..Ti 1:1-9/Lk 17:1-6 Tuesday..Ti 2:1-8, 11-14/Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday.Ti 3:1-7/Lk 17:11-19 Thursday.Phlm::7-20/Lk 17:20-25 Friday..2 Jn 4-9/Lk 17:26-37 Saturday..3 Jn:5-8/Lk 18:1-8 there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer offering for sin. GOSPEL - Mark 13:24-32 Jesus said to his disciples: "In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. "And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. "Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Next weekend, Nov 18 there will be a special collection. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. You are essential to its success. Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities across the United States. Please donate prayerfully and generously. Thank you. Pro-Life Corner... We have lost more Americans through abortion, 60,000,000, since 1973, than we did in all of our wars combined.
