MARY S CATHOLIC CHURCH VICTORIA, TEXAS August 26, 2018 SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1) Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b 2) Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, ) John 6:60-69 FOCUS:We are called to serve Christ, for he is the Holy One of God. Jesus calls his disciples to follow him, knowing some will abandon and betray him. Christ is gathering together a new people committed to serving the Lord alone, nourished by the Bread of Life, and faithful and spotless like a bride. LITURGY OF THE WORD At Shechem, the newly established tribes of Israel make a solemn covenant with the Lord. They cannot reject the one who led them to freedom. In the second reading, we hear that just as Christ gave himself up for the Church, so a married couple should do for each other in marriage. In the Gospel, Peter declares his loyalty to Jesus, for there is no one else to go to. Readings for the following Sunday SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1) Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 2) James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 3) Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, St. Mary s Altar Society Thanks to the astute and get-it-done attitude of Fred Kloesel as Chairperson for St. Mary s Altar Society Stage Committee, the bandstand/stage in the Church Activity Center Hall has been recarpeted. Fred and his committee have diligently worked together to bring this to fruition. St. Mary s Altar Society paid $ for the carpet and installation. The old carpet and skirting were removed on August 8th with the carpet being disposed of and the skirting being cleaned and pressed by Loyd & Georgia West. After the carpet was professionally installed on Friday, August 10, 2018 by Carpet Masters, Fred, Loyd & Georgia on Monday, August 13th made the necessary modifications to the platform and the skirting was attached. The steps leading up to the stage are now being considered for repainting together with a non-skid strip for the top step. We wish to express our gratitude to all who served on this committee. Thank you for your insight, inspiration and labor and most of all THANKS BE TO GOD for providing the means. St. Mary's 2019 Family FestivalSunday February 10, 2019 Everyone is invited to our 2019 Festival Planning Meetings. Our next Festival Planning meeting will be September 10, 2018 in the St. Mary's AV Room at 7:00pm. At this time we are asking for Raffle donations, and jewelry for the jewelry booth. We welcome all parishioners as we prepare to have our BEST festival yet. This first business meeting of the new year starts at 6:30 p.m., preceded by prayer at 6:10. All Catholic women age 18 and up are invited to join CDA. QUILT AND CRAFT CORNER will meet on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 9:00 a.m. in the Annex The Altar Society Quilters are looking for old or broken jewelry or one of a kind pieces. You can bring the items to the office or there is a box in the entrance to the church. The group is in need of new members. They are looking for men and women who like to do craft items Come and check out the group. Hospital, illness, surgery, death. If you don t contact your parish, we don t know these things are happening to you or your family members. If you are seen by the hospital chaplain that doesn t mean your parish priest knows you are in the hospital. Please contact the church office so we can pray for you. PLANT CARE IN THE CHURCH - Please, please DO NOT WATER the live plants in the church. Most die from overwatering rather than underwatering. Recently the roots rotted off an orchid plant. Amor Meus Spirituality Center is offering a 12 week Ignatian Retreat Finding Christ in the World at Incarnate Word Convent 1101 N.E. Water St. on Wednesday mornings 9-10 AM or Wednesday evenings 6-7:00 PM beginning August 29 through November 28, The persons making the retreat pray at home each day with a given scripture passage and meet for one hour each week to share. Stipend: $10 dollars a week, which includes a workbook for the entire retreat. The retreat is limited to 10 persons.
