Ghislaine Cotnoir. Pastor Cotnoir graduated from LTSP in 1987 and was ordained the following year. She served in Congregations and Chaplaincy sites in Upstate New York Synod until moving back to the Philadelphia area 5 years ago. She currently serves as Director of Pastoral Care at Artman Home in Ambler and at the Hearth at Drexel in Bala Cynwyd which are both part of Liberty Lutheran. Pastor Cotnoir is also part of the Interim Ministry team and is currently Consultant at Bethany Lutheran Church in Roxborough. She serves on the Board of Directors at Generation of Indian Valley and on the Editorial Board for Caring Connections, a pan-lutheran On-line journal for Chaplains. She is mother to two grown daughters and likes to cook and read and watch movies when she has spare time! Joan Woodruff, Team Member ( ) Puerto Rico In-gathering The people of Puerto Rico are still in great need, though it has been weeks since hurricane Maria blasted its way across the island. You may have heard about the many who have decided they have no recourse but to leave their homes and head to the mainland. For those who remain without power and without easy access to the many essentials of life and clean up, churches are lending a helping hand, and we are a part of that network. New Creation Lutheran Church, whose pastor is a native of Puerto Rico and a friend of Pastor Peterman s, is gathering items the people on the island are in need of. You can help by donating items on the list below there is a box in the Narthex for this Sunday. The confirmation class will be preparing them for shipment on Monday the 20 th, with financial assistance for the packaging and shipping (and pizza) generosity of Katrina Stansbeary and Thrivent. Many hands and hearts making a beautiful Thanksgiving offering thanks for pitching in! We will be collecting unwrapped gifts for children, gift cards, and monetary gifts (make checks payable to Martin Luther Silver Springs.) 3 Guest Chef Thank You Thank you to all who provided foods and/or service to our dinner at Ronald McDonald House last week. Families and staff at the house are forever grateful for all that we do to provide a home cooked meal and a friendly smile! Birthday Card Shower Chuck Shadle will be celebrating his birthday on November 21st. We cannot confirm if it is his 30th birthday or not. Trooper Rd, Norristown, PA Cy of Relief Coat Drive We are looking for new or gently used ADULT L-XXL coats for our annual Cy of Relief coat drive. These jackets will be given to families in need at the soup kitchen in Norristown on December 28th. This drive is in loving memory of Cy Gdovin, a former Trinity church member who played an instrumental part at he Norristown Soup Kitchen. Please place your coats in plastic bags, mark them Cy of Relief and leave them in Kim Travetti s office. Organ Restoration Gifts As many of you know, Joe and I were married on September 16th, in our original sanctuary so that we had the sounds of the organ. A note in our invitations said, "In Lieu of Gifts Please Donate to: TLC Organ Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church or Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County". Joe and I were very pleased that 33 members of Trinity chose to donate $3555 to the Organ Fund and 12 other friends and family donated $2240. That's $5795 to begin our fundraising. We are also happy that Habitat received $175 toward their efforts to provide decent housing to low-income families in Montgomery county. 4 Risky Business From the Desk of Nina Wason, Chris Ed Director It s not the things I ve gone and done I ll regret or be ashamed It s the things I did not say or do Just because I was afraid.* These could be the words penned by the third servant in this Sunday s gospel, the parable of the talents. A landowner, before going away, entrusts three servants with a huge load of wealth (think of each talent as a 75-pound gold brick). Upon his return, the guys give an accounting: the first two have invested and doubled the sum given them. Investment joy all around. The third, because he was afraid to fail, had simply tucked the money away to keep it safe no loss, but no gain either. To the servant s dismay, the landowner explodes, That s a terrible way to live! It s criminal to live cautiously like that! (see Matt. 25:14-30, the Message, or both readings (the prophet s harshest words are for people who rest complacently ) here. How to disappoint God, or, worse, incur God s fury: live cautiously, safely, boringly in any and all areas of life. In these readings, I hear God commanding us to live large, to go out on limbs, to take risks, to refuse to let fear be the guiding principle of our lives, to live alertly, fully awake and taking action. As I heard at music rehearsal this week, it s as if we are being handed a completely new start (a gold brick in today s world would bring you a cool million wouldn t that change your life some?) and are challenged to make the most out of it. Here s one way that plays out in church life, where we have each other to lean on and call forth to new adventures. As you may know from this past Spring and Summer, a group of parents and Loft leaders met to consider ways to strengthen our Christian formation opportunities here at Trinity while acknowledging time and energy constraints on families. What that group came up with is a daring shift from every Sunday morning to occasional seasonal Sunday afternoon/evenings designed for cross generational learning and fellowship. The first of these will take place on December 10 th from 4:30-6:00pm and everyone is invited to join us in the risky business of being formed by God s word together. Specifically, we will be considering what it means to live into God s declaration (through Isaiah, one of our Advent prophets): I am the potter you are the clay. An actual local potter, Royce Yoder, who just happens to be the creator of our communion vessels, will be on hand to talk about his craft, his materials, his shaping of the clay. He s bringing his wheel and will be throwing (in the potter s sense of the word) a pot or two. We ll have some clay on hand so you can make stuff too! And we ll talk as we go, sharing stories, asking questions. Oh and yes! there will be dinner! *Carrie Newcomer: The Things I ve Gone and Done
