2 The Holidays and Hunger Find out how much God has given you and from it take what you need; the remainder is needed by others. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. Anne Frank You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayer works. Pope Francis There are times like Christmas that we are reminded of the profound role food plays in our lives. It s the essential ingredient for bringing families, friends and communities together to share and celebrate. That is why the heart breaks when we think of how many during this festive season will go without the single mother and her children, the disabled Veteran, the recently unemployed neighbor, the elderly couple just scraping by, and the children, who want and need what all children seek this time of year. This season of celebration just magnifies their needs and wants and maybe makes the hunger hurt just a little bit more. However, there are signs of Hope we at Trinity are and have been that sign of Hope for those lining up each month at the Daily Bread Food Bank. We have been devoted at Christmas time and year round. It s really not that hard. All you need to do is just take a minute out of your hectic schedule and grab a box of cereal or a jar of peanut butter, or a can of soup and bring it along to church. Collectively we matter. Collectively we make that hunger hurt just a little less and the holiday just a little brighter. In Service, Rick Cole Bread Sale Thank You A sincere "Thank You" to everyone who generously supported our Trinity Thanksgiving Bread Sale. Thank you to our bakers and the volunteers who prepared the "Homemade Soup Mix" and the "M and M Cookie Mix" jars. These new items sold well. Our Pipe Dreams Fund is growing and hopefully, we will be able to move ahead with restoring our Moeller Pipe Organ. This is a big project but by working together, we will succeed. 3 Reasons to be Thankful Psalm 107:1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. In the midst of all of our feasting, it is very easy to forget about the one we are celebrating. Sometimes we even forget to give thanks altogether. You might be thinking, Well, I don t have a lot to give thanks for this year. Maybe you are having financial trouble or health problems. Maybe there is a conflict in your family. But we need to put things into perspective. As someone wrote, if you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who won t survive the week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 20 million around the world. If you attend a church service without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed that almost three billion people in the world. If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep, you are richer that 75 percent of this world. If you have money in the bank, some in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8 percent of the world s wealthy. There is a lot to give thanks for and the primary reason we were put on this earth as human beings is to glorify God and to give Him thanks. Count your blessings!! Advent at Trinity And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. As the tree of Hope is rooted in God s abiding love for each of us, so grows the tree of our church family, rooted in the past, rising to the future. To acknowledge Trinity s roots, our families and our heritage, please take a strip of burlap from the basket in the narthex, print your family s LAST name on the strip in marker, and return the completed strip to the basket. Watch the base expand through Advent, fortifying our foundation. 4 TLC On Call Schedule If you are in need of pastoral care on either a Friday or Saturday (Pastor Skyle s days off), a member of TLC is always on call. Below you will find the on-call list for this month. November 30 & December 1 Kim Allen December 7 & 8 Jennifer depaulis December 14 & 15 Sally Jeffries December 21 & 22 Jenny Anderson December 28 & 29 Lynn Chialastri Assistance Requested Our sister in Christ, Susan Spengler, is in need of assistance with transportation to medical appointments at a medical building next to Bryn Mawr hospital, usually on Tuesday mornings. If you are willing to be a driver either now or in the future, please reach out to Susan directly with your contact information. This need will be on-going for several months. Drive once or once in a while as per your availability. Her immediate needs are for Tuesday, December 4 and December 18. Drivers are also needed for some Tuesdays in January and February and beyond. The Giving Ministry Please remember to drop your 2019 Intention of Giving Cards in the box located in the church narthex. We ask each of you to pray and reflect on all of God s blessings in your lives. Supporting Trinity s base mission fund is one way to give back. It helps all within our church community, as well as many outside of our walls develop a closer relationship with God. Your contributions fund not only the physical plant and campus, but also the salaries of our church employees, our music programs and our educational programs. The congregation has made a commitment to support stronger youth programing including a new staff person for formation and youth and family programs. 5 Wait for It From the Desk of Nina Wason That snow storm a couple of weeks ago: while a small amount of snow was predicted, the resulting 6 inches that landed on our streets and driveways sort of snuck up on us, didn t it? There was a little preparation the roads in my neck of the woods were brined on Tuesday but only the major byways, not the neighborhood lanes and ways. My weather app kept saying that maybe an inch would fall. No big deal. I did not really look further for more information, radar scans, air pressure readings; I went about daily routines, not all that attentive to the sky. Ha! Big Snow. Caught me a little bit unprepared. Made afternoon travel a nightmare for many. Changed my driving plans for Friday morning. If we had known we might have tried to work from home, schools might have canceled the whole day so as not to have kids on busses as snow was blasting down. Hopeful souls might have turned their pajamas inside out on Wednesday night to persuade the Spirit of Winter that they really, really needed a snow day! Maybe the state, county and township road crews could have brined more roads and gotten plows out earlier. Some folks would have made sure they had enough milk, bread and eggs to feed the family. Others would have prepared their buckets of ice melt, found the snow shovels, uncovered the snow blower and filled it with gas. And then checked in with the news report full of dread or eager expectation. These are the ways we prepare for winter weather going about our daily lives while also taking action, adopting certain attitudes, gathering information. It s a little like preparing for Christmas. In the church, we have a season of preparation: Advent. Four Sundays to tune our hearts and minds and lives to the coming of the Christ. It is a time to take action, consider priorities, listen, and watch expectantly for the movement of God among us, in us, through us. Waiting is so hard: who enjoys a doctor s waiting room, traffic jams, or the shopper who sneaks 27 items into the 15-or-fewer line at the grocery store? Ugh. So I cannot even begin to wrap my head around what it was like for the people of Jeremiah s time (this week s prophet) to hear him go on and on about God s promised deliverer because it was about 600 years before the birth of Jesus. 600 years! That s 5-6 times longer than slaves waited to be free in this country. Imagine. To wait for God to come, speak, or act is like learning a whole new calculus, requiring other-worldly patience and, as theologian Richard Rohr has said, coming to grips with the possibility that your life isn t necessarily all about you. What does it mean to prepare for the One who has already come as a baby? Already has lived and taught and healed and suffered among us? What does it look like to prepare for him to come again? How do we wait expectantly and patiently? Maybe it s like preparing for a storm. Maybe Jesus is the coming storm.
