Kim Truebenbach is currently on-leave-from-call to care for her family. She has served two congregations since her ordination in 2001, one in NJ and one outside of Reading, PA. 4 Our Lenten journey moves on... As we walk as a community through these last weeks of Lent, through the wilderness, undergirded by berit the promises of God we also move closer to the entry into Jerusalem and the Triduum, the Three Days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (when the Church observed Easter Vigil). You ll see the space around us transform as the season shifts... and perhaps you would like to have a hand in helping to effect these changes. Many hands make lighter work, and the fellowship together is rich and good. After worship on Sunday, March 18, the sanctuary will be transformed into Basilica seating (facing each other), for Palm Sunday through Good Friday. On Saturday morning, March 31st, there will be much to make ready in the changeover from Good Friday to Easter. 5 Warped Nina Wason, Christian Education Director My sister-in-law, Nancy, works as a re-enactor at a place called Strawberry Bank in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Right in the middle of the city, and on the edge of Portsmouth Harbor, this living museum sort of place covers a few city blocks where you can see period homes and inhabitants from the 17 th through the 19 th century. Some days Nancy is a colonial-times baker, hovering over and around an indoor hearth not very much fun in the summer to make meat pies and breads for visitors to taste. Other days she is a 19 th century weaver, using a large hand loom to make tablecloths, hearth mats and dish towels. Some of these she gets to keep and last year for Christmas she gifted me with one of the dish towels. It s beautiful and functional, with gentle greens and blues and a soft yellow woven up and down, in and out in a checkerboard pattern of warp (the up/down) and weft (side to side). It s mostly beyond me to explain the process of how my little dishtowel came to be, but it s so pretty and was made with such love. Looking at our gospel this week, I think of the author, John, as this kind of weaver: look at the strands he brings together into this picture he weaves during Jesus last days in Jerusalem you see everything from a noisy crowd to a smaller group of travellers, to a single disciple, all coming to one point: Please, we would like to see Jesus. Listen to what Jesus says to them. He starts talking about a single seed once buried - yields much fruit; how loving life too much can lead to a kind of death, but being willing to let go of your life can lead to gaining everything your heart needs. He tells his friends that though he is deeply troubled at what is about to happen, that same event is going to bring eternal glory to God. Single to multiples, life to death, trouble to glory. This is the warp and weft of the life of individual and communal faith. The artist builds the frame, chooses the colors, moves the shuttle left to right and back again, working the treadles to keep the weave tight. Sometimes the light color is up, sometimes it is on the underside - not visible. While the work is in process, it isn t much to look at. But the weaver keeps saying glory is coming it is in her capable, loving hands.
