2 The Scream From the Desk of Nina Wason, Chris Ed Director One of my first real jobs was teaching English as a Second Language at Hofstra University. Toward the end of my second semester there, one of my classes was visited by an ongoing stream of professors from the English department observing my class. Perfectly normal: an unannounced bit of review of the new faculty member. Except my position was not attached to the English department. I was in the linguistics department, having been trained by linguists to teach the language. The people visiting my class were taught the great literature of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Sylvia Path, Walt Whitman. I was teaching college kids from Ecuador various forms of the past tense and vocabulary they might need while asking for directions to a Mets game. It was a really terrible review. The English profs described how I missed opportunities to delve into various Latin prefixes that mark past and present time references, wondered why I didn t make use of some very fine passages from Last of the Mohicans to give all those verbs a richer context.on and on. I was so bad, they said, this semester really needed to be my last. They recommended cutting me from the staff. It was, of course, a completely unfair review, and turned out to be part of some larger political game that naïve little me knew nothing of. After I was done crying, I wanted to scream, and I do recall ranting a bit more than I should have back at those professors. But, overall, it was a good reminder to me to do my work well, to be open to new approaches to teaching the past tense, and to not be an uninformed critic of other people s work. Jesus has a parable for us this week about a fig tree that wasn t being figgy enough, so the owner wanted to cut it down. The gardener had a different idea. Tree. Cutter. Gardener. Have you been there? Come talk about it with us in Loft. We ll have the help of this painting by Edvard Munch. It s titled The Scream; can you guess why I picked it?

3 Code Blue Ministry of Phoenixville What did you do last time it snowed? Did you settle into your couch and watch a movie? Did you bake cookies with your children? Did you light a fire and read a book? Did you bundle up to go outside to build a snowman (or clear the driveway)- only to rush back inside moments later to warm your fingers and toes? What if you didn t have a nice warm place to be? What if you didn t have a heating system or even a roof and walls to keep you warm and safe? Unfortunately, that is the reality for many members of our community. There are people in our neighborhoods that lack these comforts we all rely on, especially throughout the winter. Although there are several shelters in the greater Philadelphia area, locals in Phoenixville identified that there were not sufficient winter warming resources in that area. In response to this need, St Ann s Parish in Phoenixville has taken the call to ministry and has initiated a winter warming center in Phoenixville. This enter was opened several weeks ago, and is looking for volunteers to operate this ministry. Specifically, they need adults to staff the shelter from 8pm-8am (in 4 or 8 hr shifts) throughout the winter (until late March/early April). They also are requesting meals for their guests. We will have a member of the coordinating committee for the Code Blue Ministry of Phoenixville with us at adult forum this Sunday, February 28. Please join us then or contact me if you would like to make a difference in the lives of those around us by participating in this ministry. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me Matthew 25:35 Trinity Library Open House Trinity Library has a new location and a new look! On March 6, the Library Team invites you to an Open House to celebrate our beautiful new Library, conveniently located next to the new Narthex! Trinity Library Team members will be on hand after each mass to show you everything our new library has to offer. We will have a selection of Top Picks from Trinity s Pastoral Staff members and Library Team members, as well as top resources for Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers. Always wondered what Pastor Guiser s favorite book in the library is? Now you can find out! There will be a special Children s Cart in the Narthex so little ones can easily choose their favorites to take home. For each book, CD, or DVD signed out during our open house and subsequently returned, Library Team members will donate $1 to be used towards the purchase of future resources. Is there a book, DVD, or CD you love? Let us know at the Open House! Trinity Now Accepting Sunday Bulletin Advertising Attention local business owners (especially those owned by congregants and by friends of Trinity).
