2 Understanding the Budget Process There have been some misunderstandings about budget preparation. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into creating a yearly budget. It begins with staff submitting budget requests for their particular area to the finance team; those numbers are reviewed and refined. The finance team needs to estimate weekly giving, as well as income from the preschool and all of the expenses involved in maintaining the building, campus and mission here at Trinity. It is a long and time consuming process. This year, a member of the finance team met with each of the staff directors to discuss budget needs. The finalized budget is then submitted to council by the finance team for review and approval. Once council approves the proposed budget, it moves forward to the congregation. In accordance with our constitution, congregational meetings and materials for them must be distributed a minimum of two weeks before the scheduled date of the meeting. This includes the proposed budget. Please understand that there can be no changes to the proposed budget once it is submitted to the congregation for review. At our upcoming February 3 congregational meeting, there will be a vote taken after explanation and discussion of the budget, where the congregation will either approve or vote down the proposed budget. If the congregation approves the proposed budget, there will be a time after the meeting to discuss creative solutions for closing the deficit gap and supplementing resources for programs. If the congregation does not vote to approve the proposed budget, and the assembled voting members do not come up with a feasible solution that is voted on and approved on February 3, then all spending is halted until an approved budget is in place. This year our finance team spent over 100 combined hours preparing our proposed budget. Please thank the volunteers on our finance team for the hard work and dedication that they have put into preparing this year's budget; in a time when our financial position is challenging, we are blessed to have faithful stewards watching over our resources. 4 Dinners On Us It s time to update the list of cooks as well as to draft new ones to volunteer for this important ministry. As you may know, the mission of Dinners on Us is to supply meals to members who are ill, who have had a death in the family or who are facing other challenges that life so often presents. Once you join, you will receive, at various times, an with a link outlining who/what/ where and when a meal is needed. There is NO obligation to sign up to provide a dinner every time you receive an . If you are not a cook, you are still welcome to join this ministry! Instead of preparing a meal, you can deliver a restaurant gift card or even order a meal off the website- TakeThemaMeal.com the website we use to schedule Dinners on Us. There are no meetings you must attend. You can help when it is convenient for you to do so. Habitat for Humanity With permits and plans finally approved, work has begun on the new build in Bridgeport. Trinity is scheduled to provide 10 volunteers to work on the home this February 23 rd! Rediscover Jesus Monday, February 4th Rediscover Jesus will meet on Monday, February 4th at 6:30pm at the West Norriton Diner in Jeffersonville. We will be studying the book Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle and discuss Chapter 2, "Dis-Grace". We encourage you to read the chapter in advance. If you need a book please see Marilou Doughty. 5 The Love Test A few years ago I was coming home from work, late as usual. Turns out I realized that this was no ordinary day. It was February 14 th. Yes, Valentine s Day and I was headed home empty handed. Not to be too late, as I was already, I pulled into the parking lot of the local supermarket. Surprisingly crowed for a Tuesday night I thought. When I entered the store I saw the reason before me. 40 to 50 other men roaming around the flower section looking for anything that was red had a heart on it and bloomed. There was another group scanning the candy aisle for any heart- shaped or laced covered box they could find that remained on the shelf. We were all in this together, fearful of the reaction to being empty hand upon arriving home. So it was not about sentiment at this point it was about survival. Get something, make the effort and hope it passes the love test. I got older and wiser. I got to the supermarket during the day and got the best pick of candy boxes and of course the heart shaped balloon that says BE MINE. (Always a show stopper.) But this time I will go to the supermarket and go in another direction. I will buy some food for someone I have never met. Yes someone who was not in need of a Whitman s Sampler but who needs basic food for their family dinner table, like our neighbors in the Daily Bread Food line each month. This too is about survival. A box of cereal, a can of tuna fish, and jar of peanut butter has as much heart filled love as a 2 lb Russell Stover heart- shaped box of candy. It is February, the Valentine month. Symbols of love and caring come at us in many clever forms. The supermarket is just waiting for your arrival.
