2 Chorister Parents Cake Sale next Sunday The Chorister Parents are holding a cake sale next Sunday after the Eucharist in the Chapter House. Proceeds support the outreach work of the Cathedral Choir. Harvest Eucharist next Sunday There will be a retiring collection for Harvest for the work of Christian Aid in Ethiopia, Malawi, Honduras and Burkino Faso. Christian Aid is supporting women s groups in these countries to use solar energy to create business opportunities. Every 1 you give will be worth 5 thanks to European Union match funding. Thank you. Monday Lunchtime Meditation Due to the difficulty in creating quiet space for this weekly service at 1.05pm on Mondays, it s been decided not to hold the Meditation until we have the screening at the west end of the Lady Chapel in place. We will advertise the Meditation once again as soon as we have a suitable date. Pilgrim: A Course for the Christian Journey Please note this has been postponed until the New Year. Sip & Study 2018 Sip & Study is a small, friendly and welcoming group meeting on Tuesday afternoons at Robert Raikes House in Southgate Street, where we use the ancient practice of Lectio Divina to explore the coming Sunday s Gospel reading. The process of Lectio, used by Benedictine monks, is very much about quiet and listening to God and to one another. Although the practice may be ancient, we find much to reflect upon through it about our lives today. Anyone can come along; you don t need prior experience of Lectio as we learn the process through experiencing it. Sip & Study starts at 2.30pm and finishes at 4pm, and we will be meeting on 25 September, 2, 9 and 16 October before taking a break for half term and recommencing on 6 November.

3 Cathedral Book Club The Book Club meets on the 2 nd Monday of the month at 2 pm, almost always at 3 Miller s Green. Please let Canon Celia know if you or a friend would like to join us. The book for the next meeting on 8 October is Munich by Robert Harris. Please note that the December meeting has been moved from 10 December to 17 December. Cathedral Rule of Life From September, anyone interested in following, knowing more about or simply finding out about our cathedral Rule of Life will be welcome to come along to a monthly gathering on the first Tuesday evening of each calendar month. These informal evenings will be opportunities to reflect together on scripture and on some of the challenges and joys of seeking a more nurturing shape for our lives. We begin at 7.30pm with refreshments and end at 9pm after a short act of worship. Dates coming up before Christmas are Tuesday 6 November and Tuesday 4 December, and we meet at 19 Upper College Green at the home of Jon Glass. All are welcome. Dementia-friendly Songs of Praise at St Mary de Lode There will be dementia-friendly Songs of Praise at St Mary de Lode church at 2.00pm on Wednesdays 10 October, 14 November and 12 December. The services will last 45 minutes with tea and biscuits afterwards. There will be information from Mindsong and the Alzheimer s Society available at each service. The Dream of Gerontius, Elgar Saturday, 13 October The Gloucester Choral Society are performing Elgar s masterpiece The Dream of Gerontius in Gloucester Cathedral, considered by many to be his finest choral work. 4 Dining Out on the third Sunday Sunday 21 October The date for September s Dining Out together in the Monk s Kitchen will be Sunday 21 October. Again, a large table will be set aside for us at 12 noon. If you d like to be included, just give your name to Barbara Merrick, either at coffee time after the Eucharist, or using the contact details below. Payment can be made individually on the day. Contact details are available on the cathedral website or out of hours on Evening Organ Recital - Wednesday 17 October 7.30pm Henry Fairs, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire All are welcome to join us for a pre-recital reception drink at 6.45pm Admission free with retiring collection in aid of Cathedral Music Annual Lecture - Wed 24 Oct at 2.30 pm The 2018 Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society Lecture will be held on Wed 24 Oct at 2.30 pm in the Parliament Room. This year Mr Russell Weston will look at the Cistercian Abbeys on Gloucestershire; there were three very different ones. All are welcome you do not have to be a guide or a member of the Society. Gloucester Cathedral Ramblers - Saturday 27 October The next walk, on Saturday 27 October, replaces the two walks originally scheduled for Saturday 6 October and Saturday 3 November. As Peter Barrett will not be fit enough to lead a walk for some time, it will be led by Bruce Matheson. It will start in Chepstow and follow the spectacular Wye Valley Walk for 9 km to Tintern Abbey for lunch. After lunch, there will be the option of either using public transport to return home or walking back to Chepstow along Offa s Dyke (also 9 km). New ramblers are especially welcome. It is not necessary to worship regularly at Gloucester Cathedral in order to walk with the Ramblers. 5 Requiem Eucharist - Friday 2 November 5.30pm All Souls Requiem Eucharist sung by the Cathedral Choir. We commemorate those who have died since the last Requiem by name. There is an extended period of silence during which we pray for all who have died and especially those we are remembering personally. If you would like the name to be read out of someone who has died since the 2017 Requiem (Friday 3 November), please hand the name written down in capital letters to one of the Clergy or to the Cathedral Office fao Nigel Sharp : please mark your envelope All Souls Day. Lay-clerks sing The Beatles Friday 16 November 2018, 7.30pm At Maisemore Village Hall, a group of Gloucester Cathedral lay-clerks will present a programme of Beatles music and other songs from the '60s. A hot supper in '60s style will be served, together with wine and soft drinks. Mini-skirts and flares optional! Tickets 25 (to include supper and one glass of wine) are available online at by telephone on and from Judith Holroyd or Judith Armiger. Proceeds from this event will go to support Gloucester Three Choirs Festival Lunchtime Organ Recital - Thursday 22 November 12.30pm Ben Collyer, Oundle Award Winner After attending the Oundle for Organists course, Ben was awarded recitals at both Gloucester Cathedral and Queen's College, Oxford. The programme is Simon Preston 'Alleluyas'; Frescobaldi 'Canzona Quarta'; J.S Bach D minor Trio Sonata (all 3 movements), and Messiaen 'Dieu Parmi Nous'. Admission to Organ Concerts/Recitals is free with a retiring collection in aid of Cathedral Music.

6 THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE Saturday 24 November 5.00pm pm In the Quire of Gloucester Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral Choir Conductor: Adrian Partington Organ: Jonathan Hope Ian King - The Christmas Truce Gabriel Fauré Requiem Gloucester Cathedral Choir performs the world premiere of Ian King s setting of Carol Ann Duffy s poem The Christmas Truce. This wonderful work tells the story of the unofficial ceasefire on Christmas Day 1914 on the Western Front. Paired with this is Fauré s beautiful setting of the Requiem Mass a perfect opportunity for reflection as the world commemorates the centenary of the Armistice. 7 PROJECT PILGRIM Remembering the Fallen From Wednesday 17 October a giant waterfall of poppies will be on display in the Lady Chapel. Poppyfall was created by GCHQ staff and friends to launch the Royal British Legion s Gloucestershire 2016 Poppy Appeal. It was originally on display at the intelligence agency s Cheltenham HQ and is a testament to their continued support for the military and the Legion. We are particularly pleased that Poppyfall will be in the newly restored Lady Chapel. Its installation will be captured as a time lapse film and we ve learned from the transformation of Cathedral Green and the installation of our solar panels that timelapse is a great way to engage people in the life of the Cathedral. The Pilgrim Twitter account has similarly become a great way of sharing everything we are doing whether that is construction or events. Public engagement with Poppyfall will go further with some blank luggage tags tied to charcoal trees that will be in the Lady Chapel for people to write their prayers, thoughts and memories on. The Poppyfall makes a poignant addition to the World War One commemorations at Gloucester Cathedral which includes music recitals, services and performances as well as lighting the tower red for Remembrance. The Cathedral is keen to support Poppyfall s aim of promoting remembrance year round and offers a peaceful space for reflection with the War Memorial and the Memorial Chapel specifically linking to remembrance. The War Memorial works are nearly at an end and when the fencing is removed we will have a fully accessible and well-lit memorial that will be a fitting remembrance to all. 8 Support the Glory of Music Choral music has been an integral part of Cathedral life for almost 500 years and breathes life into our wonderful building and brings joy to us all. In Gloucester we are rightly proud of our musicians and the quality of our choirs. If you wish to keep our choral tradition alive, please support our choirs.
