3 World War One Centenary: Commemorative Services & Events World War One Centenary: Commemorative Services & Events Until Monday 26 November GCHQ Poppyfall GCHQ s giant waterfall of handmade poppies will be on display in the Lady Chapel as part of the WW1 Commemoration. The poppyfall was created by GCHQ staff and friends to launch the Royal British Legion s Gloucestershire 2016 Poppy Appeal. It was originally on display at the intelligence agency s Cheltenham HQ and is a testament to their continued support for the military and the Legion. GCHQ was originally formed to support the military and it is still an important part of their mission as they head towards their Centenary in Friday 2 November 5.30pm Requiem Eucharist A service to remember all those who have died. Anyone is welcome to provide a name to be read aloud in prayer. By Severn and Somme Friday 9 November 7.30am pm and 4.30pm pm Remembering the Gloucestershire Fallen In the Lady Chapel On Friday 9 November, Gloucester Cathedral will pay tribute to Gloucestershire s fallen to mark the Armistice. Members of the Clergy and Parish representatives will read the names of local people who gave their lives during World War One. Almost 8,000 names have been gathered from War Memorials across the county and each one will be read out individually. All are welcome to come and sit for a time of reflection throughout the day until all the names have been read out. Prayers will also be said for those who gave their lives during the conflict but did not have their names recorded. Friday 9 November 8.00pm pm By Severn and Somme: Johnny Coppin and the Gloucestershire War Poets Johnny Coppin World War One Centenary: Commemorative Services & Events Theatre performance by Spaniel in the Works Theatre Co Cheltenham Youth Choir Based on archive records, Tommy Atkins and The Canary Well-loved local folk singer-songwriter Johnny Girl focuses on the lives and experiences of workers at the Coppin and his band perform Johnny s Gloucester munitions factory and local soldiers during the beautiful settings of the Gloucestershire war First World War. The powerful, emotional and sometimes poets, from F. W. 4 World War One Centenary: Commemorative Services & Events Saturday 10 November 6.00pm Gloucester Choral Society - Remembrance Concert The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace Karl Jenkins This is a Come and Sing event which coincides with Gloucester Cathedral s commemoration of the end of the First World War. Gloucester Choral Society will stage a concert centred on Karl Jenkins The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, one of the most-performed works of our time. The work will be accompanied by a specially created film, to be shown on a large screen in the nave. The film was designed to enhance Jenkins haunting score through thought-provoking visual poignancy. Singer Tickets: 30, Audience Tickets: Seated 12 ( 5 for students and under 18), extra floor space will be available in the Sunday 11 November 6.00am - Battle s O er - A Nation's Tribute...thought-provoking visual piognancy The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace A Lone Piper will be outside the Cathedral to commence this National Day of Commemoration with a traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle Battle s O er am - Remembrance Day Eucharist All are welcome to attend as we remember those who gave their lives in conflict. A Choral Concert for Armistice Saint Cecilia Singers Conductor: Jonathan Hope The Saint Cecilia Singers, conducted by Jonathan Hope, perform a selection of choral works and popular songs from the WWI era, to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice. Tickets 15 (students and under 18s free) available from the Cathedral Gift Shop, or World War One Centenary: Commemorative Services & Events side aisles with restricted view bring a blanket or cushion! Further details and booking at or from the Three Choirs Box Office Saturday 24 November 5.00pm pm The Christmas Truce In the Quire of Gloucester Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral Choir Conductor: Adrian Partington Organ: Jonathan Hope Ian King - The Christmas Truce Gabriel Fauré Requiem Gloucester Cathedral Choir performs the world premiere of Ian King s setting of Carol Ann Duffy s poem The Christmas Truce. This wonderful work tells the story of the unofficial ceasefire on Christmas Day 1914 on the Western Front. Paired with this is Fauré s beautiful setting of the Requiem Mass a perfect opportunity for reflection as the world commemorates the centenary of the Armistice. Telling the story of Jesus from prophecies of his coming to his birth, Passion, resurrection and glorification in Heaven, Handel s glorious music is a wonderful, uplifting setting of the scriptures. A choral mainstay since its first performance in 1742, Handel s Messiah is an essential part of Christmas and is not to be missed. GCS performs this masterpiece under the baton of renowned choral director Adrian Partington. 7 Christmas at Gloucester Cathedral Tuesday 11 December 7.30pm pm G4 Christmas 2018 After a sell-out tour in 2017, G4 bring their Christmas Show to Gloucester Cathedral! Expect to hear timeless classics such as When A Child is Born, Silent Night and All I Want For Christmas, as well as delightful medleys to evoke the Christmas spirit, all delivered up-close and personal in one of the UK's most iconic historical venues. Friday 14 December 1.00pm, 3.00pm & 7.00pm The Snowman screening with live orchestra...a heart-warming perennial favourite The Snowman screening with live orchestra Also including The Bear and The Piano by David Litchfield Since its publication in 1978, Raymond Briggs timeless book, The Snowman - brought to life by its soft, watercolour images - has become a children s classic. In 1982, the wordless book about a magical friendship between a young boy and the snowman he creates, was made into an animated film first shown on Christmas Eve. The beautiful score, composed by Howard Blake, includes the evocative Walking in the Air, made famous by Aled Jones. It proved an immediate hit and subsequently became a heart-warming perennial favourite, delighting audiences of all ages and providing the soundtrack to every child s Christmas. Carrot Productions are offering the opportunity for you to experience the film in a truly unique way...a live, professional orchestra playing the original score along to the film shown on a large screen. The effect is magical and incredibly moving.
