2 Prayers and Readings COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING - Revelation A reading from the book of Revelation. 9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he 2

3 will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING - 1 John A reading from the first letter of John. 1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL - Matthew We say or sing Alleluia Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. 1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying : 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 3

4 POST-COMMUNION God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayers for our November Outreach Partner SWAZILAND SCHOOLS PROJECT This year is the 10th anniversary of SSP becoming a registered charity. It supports the education of children and adults in Swaziland by paying bursaries, providing buildings and providing food, resources and equipment. 6 CHURCH THE REVD ATALIE GAINES: Today is Atalie s last day with us and there will be a presentation to her during the 10.00am service and refreshments after in the Main Hall. Atalie will be installed as Vicar of Potters Bar King Charles the Martyr on Saturday 9 December at 3.00pm. A sign-up list for the coach is at the back of the church. Cost 6 per person. ADÈLE ROWLANDS has served the people and parish of St Andrew s as an Assistant Priest for many years but will soon be moving away. Our opportunity to say thank you to her for her ministry among us will be after the 10.00am service on Sunday 19 November. A collection and card will mark the occasion - this is at the back of the church on Sundays and in the office during the week, should you wish to contribute. SHOEBOX SUNDAY - TODAY: Thank you to all who have participated in the Link to Hope appeal. If you have forgotten to bring your filled boxes for the appeal to church today, please ensure that they are taken to the church office tomorrow. The boxes will be passed on the charity this week and start their journey to the recipients in Eastern Europe. MOVEMENT TO MUSIC: The next session will be on Tuesday 7 November at 11.00am in the Dent Room. Do come along and join in with gentle exercise (sitting or standing). A 2-MINUTE SILENCE will be observed in the Chapel at 11.00am on Saturday 11 November, led by the Vicar. CHURCH WELCOMERS TRAINING: There will be a training session for those who have expressed an interest in this new role after the 10.00am service next Sunday, 12 November, in the Holt Room. PARISH NURSE DROP-IN SESSION: This will take place on Friday 17 November from 10.30am - 12noon in the Consulting Room. The day is likely to be a Saturday from 9.30am pm (approximate timings). Philip needs a minimum of 10 people before he can arrange the course. BISHOP HUBERT VICTOR WHITSEY was Bishop of Hertford in the 1970s. Although now deceased, he is subject to investigation following allegations of historical sexual abuse. WAR HORSE - Wednesday 3 October 2018: Following 8 record-breaking years in London s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre s acclaimed play War Horse will soon tour the UK. We have reserved 20 tickets for a matinee performance when the show comes to Milton Keynes Theatre next year. CAROLYN SAMPSON (Soprano) - Saturday 2 December The internationally renowned soprano will be singing here at St. Andrew s accompanied by Joseph Middleton at 7.30pm. Before that at 6.30pm Carolyn and Joseph will be in conversation with Ian Smith. Her programme will include works by Purcell, Britten, Schubert, Schumann, Richard Strauss, Fauré, Gounod, Chabrier and Debussy. ORGAN NEWS On Sunday 19 November we will welcome Cantamus for a concert of anthems for the church s year: The Gates of Heaven. The organist will be Ian Runnells of St Paul s, Bedford. Admission will be free with a retiring collection in aid of the Organ Fund. ANGEL FESTIVAL - 15/16 DECEMBER: This December we are hosting our first ever Angel Festival and we invite you to get creative and make an angel (or a heavenly host) to be part of the event. You will find application forms to let us know the details of your angel or angels at the back of the church. Details are also available there, on our website or from the Church Office. Looking for some angelic inspiration? Why not sign up for our Angel craft workshop on Saturday 2 December, 10.00am - 12noon in the Dent Room. We will provide all you need to create an angel. Places limited, so please sign the list at the back of the church. We will need help during the Festival with serve refreshments, collect entrance money, act as stewards and help with craft activities. There will be a list at the back of the church soon and if are able to sign up for one (or more) 2 hour slot to help in any of these ways, your assistance would be appreciated.
