3 THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE Saturday 24 November 5.00pm pm In the Quire of Gloucester Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral Choir Conductor: Adrian Partington Organ: Jonathan Hope Ian King - The Christmas Truce Gabriel Fauré Requiem Gloucester Cathedral Choir performs the world premiere of Ian King s setting of Carol Ann Duffy s poem The Christmas Truce. This wonderful work tells the story of the unofficial ceasefire on Christmas Day 1914 on the Western Front. Paired with this is Fauré s beautiful setting of the Requiem Mass a perfect opportunity for reflection as the world commemorates the centenary of the Armistice. A setting of the poem by John Henry Newman, the work tells the story in beautiful poetry and music of a soul s journey through death, and is exquisitely moving. Elgar himself wrote this quotation at the end of his original manuscript: This is the best of me; for the rest, I ate, and drank, and slept, loved and hated, like another: my life was as the vapour and is not; but this I saw and knew; this, if anything of mine, is worth your memory. Gloucester Choral Society performs this wonderful work under the baton of renowned choral director Adrian Partington in the beautiful location of Gloucester Cathedral. Walker, I will lift up mine eyes The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace Karl Jenkins Saturday 10 November 6.00pm pm Gloucester Choral Society Conductor: Adrian Partington To coincide with the Cathedral s commemoration of the end of the First World War, Gloucester Choral Society with live orchestra will stage Karl Jenkins Ármed Man, of the most-performed works of our time. The work will be accompanied by a specially created film, to be shown on a large screen in the nave. The film was designed to enhance Jenkins haunting score through thought-provoking visual poignancy. The programme will also include works by Bruckner, Fauré, Tallis and Rutter. Four visits to each of the three selected schools are arranged to help develop singing and encourage pupils and teachers to enjoy the benefits of group music-making. The project culminates at the end of each term when the school choirs perform a concert in the Cathedral to an audience of proud families, relations, school staff and friends. We are very grateful to the generous donors who make this project such a success and look forward to continuing this valuable work in Gloucestershire schools. Everyone is welcome. Admission to the concert is free with a retiring collection for the Music Department s outreach work. 20
