July 2017 Monthly Newsletter of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church From the Lyon s Den I have so enjoyed serving with you and your vital and robust ministry over these two months as your interim pastor. You are a remarkable congregation with a great heart for Christ and for the people God has given you to love. My time with you will be coming to a close on July 9 with the worship services that day. Our new Lead Pastor, Andy Lambert and Associate Pastor, Christi Taylor, will be with us in worship in all three services. We will have a very special moment in all of our services that will symbolize our ministry, particularly together as we move forward into God s future for ORUMC. Thank you friends for allowing me the great privilege of having this time with you. May the full measure of God s blessing be upon you, among you and through you into the larger community you are called to bless in Christ s name. Blessings, Pastor Ken
A Message from Pastor Andy Get to know Pastor Andy with the ol' "list of truths and 3 lies" game. Contained within this list of random facts about me are 3 lies. Can you tell which are true and which are false? A tiny crustacean tried to kill me... twice. I've read every published C.S. Lewis work, but one. I was the captain of the Chess club in 8th grade. I've been a Methodist pastor, a Quaker pastor, an adjunct professor, a comedian, a bag boy, a security guard, and an Evangelist. I have performed professionally at the Comedy Club in Greensboro. I learned a lot about understanding your audience from stand-up. A corny joke about the rapper Tupac almost got me beat up in Ireland. I had a 9 sec cameo and one line in the recently released "Newton's Grace" movie. I didn't learn anything except that movie making is fun. I love to lift weights but genuinely fear I'll never get a 300 pound bench. I fell in love with the church before I fell in love with Jesus. I fell in love with Renee before she fell in love with me. Renee and I have one daughter in LA (Joy) and one daughter in Clingman (Grace, whose hubby is Luke). Our dog Beauty is 13, is blind, deaf, and sleeps 23 hours a day. She is also in charge of the household. I love coffee, but if it becomes the least bit lukewarm it's gross and undrinkable. My grandson's name is Logan; he will melt your heart. I was accepted to Duke Divinity under "Academic Probation" and had to learn to study for the first time in my life... and I studied like a maniac to survive. I have an older brother Tim. He's got a bride (Susan) and they have daughters Meredith and Kristen (who has a hubby named Howie). My mom Peggy is from a family with 12 children. My dad is from a family of 8 children. I think the most amazing verse in the Bible is John 14:12 "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." There was just one lie in this list, and it was the part about there being 3 lies. I'm sneaky sometimes. Pastor Andy 2
YOUR NEW SENIOR AND ASSOCIATE PASTORS WANT TO START GETTING TO KNOW YOU! Would you be willing to give us a little information so that we might know you better? Relationships are very important to me and Christi. Oak Ridge UMC s strength is directly related to the strength of our relationships. We are looking forward to serving among you. Andy and Christi Name: How long have you been worshiping at Oak Ridge Church? What have you enjoyed most about being part of the Oak Ridge family? How are you involved in ministry? What is one of your favorite Bible verses that has impacted your life? What are one or two of your favorite hymns or worship songs? Interests/Hobbies? Do you have other family members at Oak Ridge Church? If so, tell me about them: What else would you like me to know that would help me get to know you such as occupation, education, community activity, significant life events and circumstances, etc.? 3
I think God is excited and looks forward to the time we make to relax. When we are relaxed, rested and at peace, it makes it easier for the Holy Spirit to get through to us. This, in turn, helps us be aware of God s great love and grace for us. Vacation?... Relax, Let Go and Let God! It s summer time! For some of us, this means it s time to relax and for others, the word vacation is bitter-sweet. Many of us are counting down the days until we can pack our bags and head off to our favorite vacation destination with family and friends. For others it s sometimes hard to walk away from our busy careers and other commitments knowing that when we return our inboxes will be full. But it s also important for us to remember that even God rested from His work, too. In Genesis 2:2 we learn that God finished his work, and He rested from all the work that He had done in creation. Making time for relaxing is so important to our health, relationships and our emotional well-being. Play and recreation is an essential part of the re-creation we all need from time to time. It is also vital to our spiritual well-being. It s very important to refill our spiritual tanks. What is the Adventures of Flat Jesus? FLAT JESUS was created as a way to keep our church connected as we enter the Summer travel season. Pick up your Flat Jesus this Sunday from one of the children's stations. Cut out and color Flat Jesus, and take a picture of him wherever you go. Be sure to share your Flat Jesus pictures with us! On Twitter, use #ORUMCFLATJESUS, or post it to the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church Facebook page. Taking it further using Flat Jesus is a great way to be reminded that Jesus is with you wherever you go even on vacation! As you make your summer plans don t forget about your family here at Oak Ridge UMC. Worship with us when you are in town and when you re not try one of our "Worship-onthe-Go" bags. While it can't replace the wonderful community worship we experience, Worship-on-the-Go bags will help you remain rooted in God's presence wherever you go! Worship on the Go bags are for church families to use at home or while traveling. Please take only one bag per family. Each piece inside the bag helps households deepen spirituality and practice their faith. The materials are also a reminder that even when families are outside the walls of the church, they are still members of the family of God. The bag includes prayers, discussion prompts, and activities. The bag also contains a Flat Jesus and the prompt to take pictures and post them on the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church Facebook page. Peace and blessings as you travel this summer. I pray that you will discover how the Lord can give you more than rest and travel fun this summer. Let go and let God make you more whole, renew your spirit, bring you peace and a deeper faith. Tracey Ring To my Oak Ridge Family, Thank you for sharing your families with me. I am so honored and blessed to know each of you. Thank you for inspiring me to serve and to remember that every action is an opportunity to share Christ love with someone I encounter. I ve made so many wonderful friends while working here at Oak Ridge UMC. Thank you for being such a big part of my own faith journey. The memories I ve made will always be held close to my heart. Peace and blessings to each of you. Love, Tracey Ring 4
Mission of the Month: Homeless Kit Ministry Our goal for 2017 is to highlight a specific mission each month. For the month of July, we are highlighting the Homeless Kit Ministry. Giving out homeless kits is one way to show God s love to those in need. Drawstring bags are filled with items that would be helpful to the homeless. The kits are put together by various church groups involving families and children ministries. Kids get to help make the bags and then help distribute them by safely handing them out from their car as they see people in need. Completed homeless kits are available in the lobbies. You are encouraged to pick up one or more. In the last 5 years, we have handed out approximately 1500 bags. Hannah s Haven We are collecting items to make homeless kits. Please see the table on the right for a list of items being collected for the kits. Monetary donations are accepted to purchase homeless kit items. Checks are to be made to ORUMC, memo: Homeless kits. Mission Offering envelopes are available in the lobbies. If you have questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact Candy and Jerry Wright at jcwright64@sbcglobal.net. In January, $3,174 was collected for the mission of the month, Hannah s Haven. Hannah s Haven is very thankful for the support. 8 Weekday School News Summer is here and we are having lots of fun at the Weekday School. We kicked off summer with our annual Fun Day family night and preschool graduation. The summer camp is in full swing with daily field trips. They will be taking trips to the pool, skating, bowling, laser tag, the Asheboro Zoo, Grasshoppers game, movies, trampoline park, transportation museum, and many more. The younger classes are enjoying weekly water play and fun summer themes! During the summer we care for over 150 children full-time and have 36 members on staff. This fall we are expanding our afterschool program by adding an additional classroom. We will be fully furnishing this new classroom and can use the following donations: Childsafe household items (pots, pans, wooden spoons), old telephones, keyboards, career clothing/shoes, brief case, purses, men s suits, ties, hats, scrubs, stethoscope, uniforms for any career-or anything else that you think of that could be used in dramatic play! Donations can be dropped off between 7:00am-6:00pm in the Weekday School office. In Christ, Jamie Hatchell, ORWS Director Our Weekday School is Growing! Our weekday school is growing! Therefore, construction is wrapping up on the west hallway between the Choir Room and the classrooms. We look forward to the completion of this project and appreciate your patience. During this time, Wi-Fi on the main level of the education building may not be available. Thank you note from Horsepower to Kaitlyn Austin... Thank you for your efforts organizing the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church workgroup. We are truly blessed to have supporters like you and all the hard-working volunteers from ORUMC, helping us make the dream of our new facility become a reality. Our shared vision and commitment to families, friends, neighbors and strangers living with special needs comes to life and creates opportunity and access for hundreds of riders each year here at Horsepower. With your help and the efforts of everyone from Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, we are excited about the progress on our new facility and the opportunity to broaden our outreach and deepen our impact on community members living with different needs. Thank you for all that you do for Horsepower and your dedication to expanding opportunity and access to those who live each day at a disadvantage. Sincerely, Jan Clifford, Executive Director 8
KAIROS #46 Twice a year, Christ reaches out to residents inside Central Prison (CP) in Raleigh through our team of Kairos volunteers. This is very humbling for the volunteers: This 72-hr ministry is interfaith; the 42 residents with whom we ll share Christ s through our loving and listening, will include Muslims, Rastafarians, Wikkens, or men who have turned their backs on God early in life. A person cannot undertake this ministry alone. Each of us enters CP with the prayers and resource support of our outside teams. We see God work miracles, as walls come down through our listening and loving. Prayer is an irreplaceable act of agape (unconditional love) from our outside teams. It bears fruit for God throughout our long days with the men, and often during restless nights! This is my 29 th Kairos. How You Can Help Support Kairos Make Cookies Cookie Specs: Chocolate chip only - no fruit, nots or sprinkles A challenging element of this ministry is that each team member must bring 50 dozen perfect cookies. The cookies need to meet the requirements listed to the right. We will be collecting them in the Education Building Sunday, July 30; I will recheck August 1 before I leave. Round, 2.5 diameter Packaged by the dozen in quart size Ziploc bags We are also encouraged to bring standard size placemats; decorated by small children (include their first name and age), with a Bible verse or words of encouragement. Each participant has one for each meal, and many of the placemats go back to their cells. We have a supply of placemats for decorating if you want to help. Many placemats were produced May 10 th at are Change the World Service Day. Our prayer chain may be the easiest, and also one of the most important places to help. Our prayer partners affirm their intention to pray during the weekend (August 6-9, 2017), by writing their names on prayer sheets we will pass around. We cut the signed strips then make loops for a prayer chain that goes all the way around the gym at least once. Please also pray for our outside team, including ladies in their 90 s who do the cooking, and the guys who deliver it. If you can help with this Kairos weekend, or have questions, please contact Dan Nelson at Your friend in Christ, Dan Nelson (for Outreach) Needed by July 30 Make Placemats Pray! 9
Malignant (cancerous) tumors of the connective tissues are called sarcomas. There are more than 50 sub-types of sarcoma. According to the American Cancer Society, about 11,280 people will be diagnosed with sarcoma this year and slightly more men than women develop soft tissue sarcoma. Sarcomas are cancers that are much more likely to affect children and young adults than many other more common cancers. Sarcoma is a very rare disease. Due to its rarity, it is crucial for patients to seek a cancer specialist in the treatment of their disease. Sarcoma arises in the connective tissue of the body. The connective tissue includes muscle, bone, fat, nerve, cartilage, blood vessel, and deep skin tissue. Connective tissue is present throughout the body, so sarcoma can occur in any location. Sarcomas are divided into two main groups: bone sarcomas soft tissue sarcomas Two thirds of sarcomas are located in the extremities (arms or legs). Because it is so rare and it takes multiple forms in multiple locations, sarcoma is difficult to detect, often misdiagnosed and complex to treat. Soft Tissue Sarcomas (adult): There are many types of soft tissue sarcoma. The cells of each type of sarcoma look different under a microscope, based on the type of soft tissue in which the cancer began. Soft Tissue Sarcoma Subtypes Liposarcoma Fibrosarcoma Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans Undifferentiated Pleomorphic/MFH Synovial Cell Sarcoma Epithelioid Sarcomas Rhabdomyosarcomas Leiomyosarcoma Kaposi's Sarcoma Bone Sarcoma Subtypes: Ewing's Sarcoma Chondrosarcoma Undifferentiated Pleomorphic/MFH Osteosarcoma Pediatric Sarcoma: Pediatric sarcomas are of three types. They are called Pediatric Sarcoma because of their greater prevalence among children compared to adults. However, they can occur in young people and adults as well. Rhabdomyosarcomas - tumors in the skeletal (striated) muscle and one of the most common types of soft tissue sarcoma. Rhabdomyosarcomas are often widely spread by the time a diagnosis is made. Treatment generally consists of surgery and combination chemotherapy (that is, more than one drug is used). Osteosarcoma - the most common type of bone cancer. Osteosarcoma usually starts in osteoblasts, which are a type of bone cell that becomes new bone tissue. Osteosarcoma is most common in teenagers. It commonly forms in the ends of the long bones of the body, which include bones of the arms and legs. In children and teenagers, it often forms in the bones near the knee. Ewing's Sarcoma - cancer that occurs principally in bone, most commonly affecting the long bones of the arm and leg, the pelvis, and the ribs. However, Ewing's Sarcoma can also occur in soft tissues and as such is considered a "family" of cancers that include Peripheral Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET). It is more common in girls than boys and is rare among Africans and African-Americans. Multi-drug chemotherapy is the primary treatment in association with surgery and radiation.
