1 Arizona CDA Reflections May 2014 Volume 1, Issue 5 Arizona State Chaplin Fr. Abran Tadeo pastorstmargaret@hotmail.com St. Margaret Mary Parish From The State Regent Maureen O Reilly O Shea Tucson Arizona State Regent Maureen O Reil[y O Shea On behalf of our State Education Chairman Bette Acitelli I am proud to announce the winners of the State of Arizona Education Contest. The names of the first place winners have already been submitted to Joyce Ann Fleming the National Education Chairman for the CDA National Competition. We have never before given an Honorable mention to any entry but Bette felt that these entries should receive one. Evidently there was a misunderstanding of the rules of the submission on some entries and she did not feel a child should go unrecognized for their effort when they had done their best. Therefore in the true sense of the Catholic Daughters Charity they are being awarded an Honorable Mention. Bette has worked tirelessly as the Education Chair. She has encouraged us all to really get behind this program and as you look at the winners you will see how successful she has been. She not only took on the Education Contest but also the Education of Courts and their membership. Many of you were at the fall Workshop and were able to listen to her first hand. The sad thing is that today I accepted her resignation after her three years of service in this position. Bette is ready to spend more time as Regent of Court Queen of Peace in Green Valley and continue as Parliamentarian for the state. We are therefore looking for her replacement and invite you all to consider this worth while and exciting position. Bette will be your instructor and helper. I know there are many of you in Arizona who could continue Bette s excellent work and would enjoy this position. Please let me hear from you. Let s continue the good work Maureen O Reilly O Shea Arizona State Regent moreillyoshea@gmail.com First State Vice Regent Irene Gramza Second State Regent Marilyn Witte State Secretary Lorrie Holland State Treasurer Carolyn Larson INSIDE THIS ISSUE Education Winners... 2 National Regent Elect...2 State Education Chair... 3 Court Court Court Court Court Court Court Court

I have just returned to Minnesota on Tuesday from a trip to your beautiful state for a CDA State Board meeting. Immediate Past State Regent, Susan Mone and her husband, Doug served as hosts extraordinaire to my husband, Dave and me. We had a very good board meeting conducted by your very capable Regent, Maureen, and then Doug and Susan took us to the Organ Stop Pizza in Phoenix for pizza and the outstanding entertainment by the organ player. Dave and I enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you to Susan, Doug, Maureen, and the Arizona State Board for a wonderful visit. Last newsletter, I asked that you continue to keep membership in the forefront of your CDA plans. I was so excited to hear the wonderful news about your new courts in Surprise. Congratulations on both your new senior and junior courts. Welcome to Catholic Daughters of the Americas to all the new members. I hope you will become active members so that you enjoy all the benefits of CDA. I am happy to hear that a number of you are coming to the National Convention in Billings in July. Be sure to follow all the deadlines in getting your registration, meal, and tour reservations in on time. The ladies in Montana are working very hard to put on a great convention and I m sure you will all enjoy it very much. I m looking forward to seeing you there. To all of you, have a great summer and come back refreshed and ready to start a new year in Catholic Daughters. May God always bless you and your work in CDA. 3 STATE WEB PAGE Work is still being done on the State web page. Due to recent illness and other problems this is slightly behind schedule. The web page has lots of information and links to local court web pages, check it out! Court 2651 Daughters of St. Anthony Education Chair Lynn Wilson and Mary Peoples presented awards to State Essay Contest winners at St. Anthony of Padua School, awards assembly. Four St. Anthony students from left to right: Gloria Holt, Marc Ortiz, Cutter Boyle and Kylie Maretech received first place awards for the state Catholic Daughters Education Contest. Their entries are now in the national competition. The next four students in the picture are Marisianna Martinez Audrey Lem, Drue Sullivan and Kaley Kastl. They received second and third place awards in the state competition. Photo by Lynn Wilson From The State Education Chair A sincere thank you to the six Courts who sent entries Daughters of St. Anthony Court 2651, Madonna Court 2067, Our Lady of Guadalupe 2250, Our Lady of the Desert 2164, Our Lady of Lourdes 2278 and Queen of Peace We had 24 entries submitted and 12 were selected as first place winners. This year for the first time we awarded two Honorable Mention certificates. It is my belief that no child s efforts should go unrewarded, especially when there was a misunderstanding of rules. All entries have received certificates from State CDA and the first place winners have received letters advising of them that they are competing in the National Contest. Education winners (see page 2) the names of these young, talented people. I have thoroughly enjoyed the position of Education Chairman as it has given me an opportunity not only to promote the Education Contest and Court Education but to educate myself about Catholic Daughters and to meet and work with so many wonderful women. Thank you so much for your graciousness! It has now been three years that I have held the position of Education Chairman and I am now stepping down. We have made so many advancements in our role in Education and I am hoping that the next person will continue to move Education forward so I am offering to work closely with that person until they feel they are ready to spread their wings and fly just as I did. Health reasons have made it necessary for me to curtail some of my activities as well as my taking the position of Regent for my own Court have caused me to change my focus. I will remain as State Parliamentarian so if you have any questions in that area please feel free to contact me. Again, thank you for a wonderful experience as your State Education Chairman!! 5 ST. GERMAINE COURT # 2473 SUPPORTS LIFE CONNECTIONS Life Connections is a life-affirming resource and referral center, welcoming those of all faiths, and providing support, hope, and healing in the areas of pregnancy, infertility, and post-abortive needs, to women and men in a loving, non-judgmental and caring way. This is accomplished through FREE, loving and non-judgmental support by our dedicated, compassionate and caring Christian volunteers. We believe every person deserves love and support during an unexpected pregnancy. Our Goal is to give men and women life-affirming options other than abortion or birth control. No one should feel so alone, coerced, or hopeless that their only option is to end their child's life through abortion. We provide healing for those who are emotionally and spiritually wounded through the loss of a child. Picture above of Carolyn Larson, (Right) Treasurer of St. Germaine Court # 2473, Prescott Valley, giving a check to Life Connections, Prescott Valley, one of the many charities that St. Germaine Court supports. Diane Duncan, (Left) Director of Life Connections in Prescott Valley, Az. START A JR CDA COURT A How to Start a JCDA Court manual is being compiled. While there is a section in the Tools of the Trade on how to install a JCDA court, it doesn t touch on the strategy, direction or marketing involved. I am working with 1 st National Vice Regent, Helene Shepard, as her local court sponsors a JCDA court in New York. This manual should be ready for State Board approval and adoption at our next state board meeting early May. I believe, one of the strong ways we can ensure growth of our membership well into the future is to adopt JCDA courts in all of our local courts. These young girls will become grounded in their faith and their love for the Catholic Daughters of America will blossom in that; they will transition into a senior court as adults. That being said, we are starting a JCDA and a Senior Court in Surprise, Arizona at St. Clare of Assisi. I recently signed 13 moms and their 15 daughters at an afternoon tea. We are now sponsoring a lunch for adult women of the parish. Please keep the spiritual success of this new endeavor in your prayers. Lorrie Holland State Secretary Photo from National Web Page 5

7 CDA HONORS DOUGLAS CLERGIES Our chef for the night, Michael Durazo is shown preparing the chicken for the main course: Chicken Fajitas! A sample of the fun decorations designed by the Appreciation Committee led by Lily Jimenez, chairperson. The Catholic Daughters of America (CDA) held a clergy appreciation dinner on April 3, for all of the fathers, sisters and deacons in Douglas. The dinner was held at St. Luke s rectory hall. A clergy appreciation dinner is a special time that congregations set aside each year to honor those who dedicated their lives to serve God. We are here thankful, for all the people that work in our church the priest, nuns and deacons that dedicate so much of their time to help us, Lilian Jimenez said. We in turn as the Catholic Daughters of America want to thank them for all of their service to our community. The event was coordinated by Jimenez who is a member of CDA. The CDA is a nationwide organization that exists as a creative and spiritual program providing its members with the opportunity to develop their God given talents in a meaningful way that positively influences the welfare of the church throughout the world. CDA members strive to embrace the principal of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality and the advancement of human rights. It is an exceptional night as we give thanks to all the special people who joined us here today, Jimenez added. to appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that all of you clergy members have given to our community, to all of those people who were not able to join us here tonight, we miss you dearly. Tonight though is about enjoying ourselves not looking at tomorrow, but celebrating the present let your hair down and have a magical night. Douglas CDA court #2670 St. Michael the Archangel, had their induc tion ceremony in January and currently has 20 members. Any women wanting to join who is 18 -years and older call Becky Castillo at (520) , or stop by the next meeting on April 10 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. Article from Douglas Dispatch By Trisha Maldonado Published April 9, 2014 Sr. Mary Aloyisius, O.C.D. holds a portrait of the Carmelite Foundress, Mother Louisita. 8 MORE FROM ST. GERMAINE COURT # 2473 Here is a poem from a Columbine student who wrote this very compelling essay, so appropriately on the first anniversary of their tragedy: "The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints; We spend more, but have less; We buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses, but smaller families; More conveniences, but less time; We have more degrees, but less sense; More knowledge, but less judgment; More experts, but more problems; More medicine, but less wellness. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; We've added years to life, but not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have Trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space; We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul; We've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We have higher incomes, but lower morals; We've become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of tall men and short character; Steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; More leisure, but less fun; More kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce; Of fancier houses, but broken homes. It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to make a difference and pass it on... 8 Bingo event that St. Geraine were hosting for a fundraiser on March 22, It was a family bingo with prizes for winners of the game, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Food and monetary support was given by Pizza Hut, Costco and Safeway. COURT PADRE KINO #1932 Court Padre Kino #1932 is having a busy spring. In March we sent off the Friendship Bags to Project Handclasp. It is always fun to get around the table and take a bag and just start filling it with small goodies that make a big difference in another part of the world. April found us taking Easter baskets of candy to the patients at Desert Vista Behavioral Center where Chaplain Irene is very grateful for our help. Again, the little things are so important. At our May meeting we will be having a May crowning and find out who will be our officers for next year. June is the end of our season with the Priest Appreciation dinner at Old Spaghetti Factory in Chandler. Our 50th anniversary plans are coming along great. We will have a Mass and luncheon on February 21, 2015 at the Landmark in Mesa. With God's help and intercession by Our Blessed Mother, we are serving as best we can. Pampered Chef basket raffle. Carolyn Larson, St. Germaine Treasurer, Karen Izydorczyk, Recording secretary and Jeri Tweet, Scrapbook chairman were at the Home & Garden Show at Tim's Toyota center this past weekend selling raffle tickets on four different baskets that will be raffled off on May 4th to 4 lucky winners, just in time for Mother's Day. Court #2473 shared a table with Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity, an organization that Court #2473 St. Germaine is involved with taking lunches for the workers.
