We will end with a Joint Prayer Breakfast here at St Alkmund s on Sat 12th Jan at 9.00am. The part most used by everyone, and only noticed if muddy, not otherwise. Quite unfair on the cleaners, this. But quite inevitable Please keep floors clear of dust Hoover carpets regularly Beware accumulation of dirt under straw matting Wash stone floors sparingly If previously polished, polish wooden floors and tiles. January Concerts Find January a miserable month? To try and lift your spirits (rather than add to the misery, hopefully), Emma Rollin will be putting on a series of lunchtime concerts on Wednesdays at 1.00pm in church during January (beginning 9th). Everyone is welcome and there s no charge. Burns Night Celebration: Saturday 26th January 2019 We are holding an informal Burns Night Celebration in the Church Hall on 26th January at 7.00pm. This is an opportunity to invite friends and neighbours to a social evening of Scottish Fayre and dancing, with haggis in a bun and pud. BYOB, soft drinks will be provided. Tickets from Tom and Jodi, priced 6/head. 2 DUFFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE DUFFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE 11
3 In Appreciation of Church Cleaners We continue our short series of extracts, in words and images, taken from Handle With Prayer: A Church Cleaner s Notebook by Graham Jeffery. The place where most of us begin our journey, in one way or another. True doorway to church. Should be blessed, noted and highlighted. 10 DUFFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE The Font Dear Friends, I wonder what your hopes are for 2019? You may personally have lots of good things to look forward to, perhaps big family events, a holiday that is already booked, or something else that looms large and positive on the horizon. Perhaps not so much. Maybe you have hopes when it comes to the national scene as well, or maybe you would echo the sentiments of this sign found in a Bookshop in Fowey in Cornwall: Please note: The post-apocalyptical fiction section has been moved to Current Affairs. When we look further afield at our world, we may also see signs of hope plans to take the environment more seriously perhaps, or moves towards peace in various places alongside the continuing reality of war, and famine and disease and destruction. We may be achieving everything we want to achieve, and we may have just sent a Christmas letter filled with cheer and optimism, and things may well be going very well and yet we know we live in a world where that is not always the case. Perhaps our comfort is the exception, not the rule. How do we understand and deal with this reality? How do we make sense of it The Vicar s Letter all or are we better off retreating into our own familiar world, away from the world outside our window? This year, whatever your hopes and aspiration are, let me encourage you to explore how the Bible answers these questions because there are answers. Answers about true hope, and about real peace, and about God s plan for the world. They are not answers that can easily be summarised in a magazine article but as good a place to begin might be this familiar Christmas reading: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah chapter 9 verses 6 and 7, ESV) Come and join us this year as we explore what the birth of this child at Christmas means for us, and for the whole world. See you soon. Yours in Christ, DUFFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE 3

5 Regular Events: I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared that they should repent, turn to God, and do work befitting repentance. Acts 26:19 20 Works befitting repentance indicates that a true relationship with God will result in a godly life-style. We are not saved by our own good works, but salvation by grace will certainly change us. Bible Notes LIVE IN DUFFIELD? RETIRED? Please contact: The Paradox of Our Time By Dr Bob Moorehead, former pastor of Seattle s Overlake Christian Church (who retired in 1998 after 29 years in that post.) The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways but narrower viewpoints. We spend more but have less, we buy more but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge but less judgment, more experts yet more problems, more medicine but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.
