1 A Prayer Upon Entering Church Almighty and everlasting God, through the death and resurrection of your Son you have proclaimed to us the gospel of peace. Grant that by the power of his resurrection we may be born anew to a living hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The Third Sunday of Easter April 30, :00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. A walk along the road starts a new journey of faith as the risen Savior meets two of His disciples on the evening after His resurrection. His word to them kindles a flame of hope in their hearts, and as they share supper they recognize Him at last! Christ lives to hand Himself over to His disciples through His Word and gifts. In today s sermon, we continue to hear of one such gift, Holy Baptism, in which God s Word promises us forgiveness, life, and salvation.

As we go along, softly explain the liturgy to your children, encouraging them to chime in with their parts: Amen! Lord have mercy! And also with you! I believe! Our Father! All of that belongs to them, too. Be sure to sing and pray your parts as you stand and kneel and sit. Your children learn by taking your lead. If you and your child must leave, please hurry back. There is a nursery downstairs for those who would like to use it, but like Jesus, we want your children in the liturgy, not out. Let the little children come unto me. (Luke 18:16). If you need help, just ask. There are lots of folks here who will lend a hand. If He had refused the cross or, if in the end, He had come down from the cross, it would have meant there was a limit to God s love, that there was something which that love was not prepared to suffer for men, that there was a line beyond which it would not go.... 8 Jesus was not crucified in a Cathedral between two candles, but on a cross between two thieves, on the town garbage heap, on a crossroads so cosmopolitan that they had to write His title in Hebrew, Latin and Greek; at the kind of place where cynics talked smut, and thieves cursed, and soldiers gambled. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see. 25 And he said to them, O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent. So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures? 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon! 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. 10

11 P: The Gospel of the Lord. NICENE CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart: C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen Please be seated. 12 The power, effect, benefit, fruit, and purpose of baptism is that it saves. For no one is baptized in order to become a prince, but, as the words say, to be saved. To be saved, as everyone well knows, is nothing else than to be delivered from sin, death, and the devil, to enter into Christ s kingdom, and to live with him forever. Here again you see how baptism is to be regarded as precious and important, for in it we obtain such an inexpressible treasure.... HYMN OF THE DAY With High Delight Let Us Unite green hymnal #140 SERMON Holy Baptism, Parts II and III P: What benefits does Baptism give? C: It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. P: Which are these words and promises of God? C: Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. P: How can water do such great things?? C: Certainly not just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God s word the water is plain water and no Baptism. But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, P: as St. Paul says in Titus, chapter three: C: He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. Please stand. We do not kneel for prayer during the Easter season. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Standing in the glorious light of the resurrection, let us pray. P:... This indicated that baptism cannot be simple, ordinary water, for ordinary water could not have such an effect. But the Word does it, and this shows also, as we said above, that God s name is in it. And where God s name is, there must also be life and salvation. Thus it is well described as a divine, blessed, fruitful, and gracious water, for it is through the Word that it receives the power to become the washing of regeneration, as St. Paul calls it in Titus. ~ Martin Luther, Large Catechism

14 Augustine offered the newly baptized no illusions about life on the far side of baptism. Using Exodus imagery, he reminded them that while they had indeed crossed the Red Sea, they had yet to enter the Promised Land; that while they need not fear a rear-guard attack from enemies drowned in the Red Sea of the font, desert wanderings still lay ahead of them.... On this desert sojourn, they would face the same mix of joy and temptation that the Jewish people had faced. They too would eat manna, both the bread of the altar and the bread of God s word. They too would drink from a cup sweetened by wood, the wood of the cross. They too would face serpents venom and be healed by gazing at the medicinal cross of Christ. 17 The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation.
