1 The Visionary A Newsletter of St. Mary Magdalen Parish June/July 2013 Volume XX Issue 6 CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FAITH & SERVICE On June 29, 1993, on the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, Bishop Kenneth Povish created a new parish community in Township. The next day he appointed Fr. David Howell as pastor and sent him to form this new Catholic community. For the first several months he helped out at St. Patrick in and St. John in Hartland; and gathered people from both communities in small groups to talk about their vision for a new parish. On the first Sunday of Advent later that fall this community began to gather for Eucharist at Farms Middle School. While its buildings are the most visible aspect of this community, much more important is the people who use the buildings to celebrate their faith, to mourn, to rejoice and to share the gift of their time and talent with others. On Friday evening, June 28, we will begin our Twentieth Anniversary year with a special Liturgy and elegant reception. This will be the start of several events that will lead up to the beginning of Advent. Please plan on joining your fellow parishioners in a celebration of prayer and faith; a thanksgiving celebration for all that God has enabled over these past 20 years and a prayerful petition to the Lord that the years that lie ahead will be even more greatly blessed! THE LITURGY WILL BE AT 7 PM FOLLOWED BY A RECEPTION DIRECTIONS to 20\20 Directions is our gathering of parish leaders: both those who have served and all those who joined this spring. It is an important meeting for all members of our ministry teams: Activities, Adult Formation & Evangelization, Charity & Justice, Community Life, Parish Wellness, Properties, Religious Formation and Worship Team will meet with our Pastoral Council, Finance Council and Time & Talent Council on Wednesday, June 12. Over the last year, our Pastoral Council members have consulted with the various ministry teams and other councils to solicit their ideas regarding our parish s future. We have looked at our Vision Statement and the work of each of the groups to fashion a detailed plan that will govern the work of our community for the rest of the decade. That is why we are calling it Vision 20\20 Directions will begin with Liturgy in the chapel followed by some light refreshments. Then we will spend the rest of the evening reviewing the last draft of the plan created by the Pastoral Council. The plan itf is composed of six goals and several strategies. By the end of the evening we hope to reach consensus on our plans and begin the work of clarifying what it will take to accomplish all we are planning. The evening will end with Night Prayer and a short thanks to all those who are ending their service on councils and ministry teams. DIRECTIONS WILL BE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12 FROM 7-9:30 PM; BEGINNING WITH MASS OF THANKSGIVING AT 7 PM. OUR SUMMER VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JWJ is July 29-Aug 2! During our vacation bible school Kingdom Rock, faith and imagination will stand strong for God as kids discover that everything is possible with God. They will participate in Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into yummy treats, experience Bible adventures, and collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them to trust God. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes with a standing strong finale a celebration that gets everyone involved in living what they ve learned. Sign up in the gathering area to attend and/or help! Youth in 6 th grade and older are encouraged to join our sky crew!

2 from the PASTORAL COUNCIL In March, our Pastoral Council members interviewed staff members to discuss their thoughts on the six goals that will make up Vision 20/20 which is a detailed plan for how we envision the parish would function by the year Staff members offered a wealth of ideas. At our April and May meetings the Council revised our draft of Vision 20/20. We expanded the plan with several practical strategies that we hope will make our plan even more effective. Now we are ready to bring the plan, a comprehensive draft, to the members of the other councils and ministry teams at Directions on Wednesday, June 12. We will use that consultation to revise and clarify our goals and begin a process of planning the steps that will enable us to accomplish our plans for On Sunday, May 26, four new members were chosen for our Pastoral Council to serve for 3 years. They are: Rob Cooney, Eileen Denhard, Ralph Hazen and Jodi Williamsen. Thanks to everyone who placed their names in nomination! This month, the council discussed how we might change the fall Stewardship Fair. This is when we invite parishioners to share their time and talent in service. What we are considering is merging our new Time & Talent survey with the service ministries. What we are hoping to do is to join the fall fair with our whole stewardship effort, using both the Sunday Liturgy and a form passed out during the Liturgy to make it easier for folks to share their gifts with the community. 3 PASTORAL COUNCIL COMMENDATIONS The Council would like to commend Gary Kinneer, Judy Spalding, Mary Ellen Wassenburg, Barbara Furlong and Josie Doucette who worked countless hours on the Pictorial Directory. The team did an awesome job in making this endeavor an important part of our 20 th Anniversary celebration! Thanks for your time and talent! RELIGIOUS FORMATION from Mary Mahar In our Formation program it takes many hearts and voices to bring the Word of God to our children and youth. We are blessed by the many Catechetical Ministers; women, men and teens who have come, week after week, prepared to share lessons with your children. Even on the week off of classes, many of them met with other team members to plan ahead. Each team seeks to meet the needs of each child and family and to make sure we are working together to explain the Church s teachings at an appropriate level. Many even made time to take Formation classes for certification. We have several women who break open the Word every Sunday morning with the children who leave Mass for Children s Liturgy of the Word as well. We are grateful to all of you who worked so hard to help our families see Christ at work in them! 5 The DEACONʹS BENCH from Dave Scharf As summer comes and summer goes, as our lives become busy with people to see and places to be, let us remember that: * Wisdom is the ability to handle frustration, control anger, and settle differences without violence or destruction. * Wisdom is patience. It is the willingness to postpone gratification, to pass up the immediate pleasure or profit in favor of the long-term gain. * Wisdom is perseverance, sweating out a project or a situation in spite of opposition and discouraging setbacks. * Wisdom is unselfishness, responding to the needs of others. * Wisdom is the capacity to face unpleasantness and disappointment without becoming bitter. * Wisdom is the gift of remaining calm in the face of chaos. This means peace, not only for ourselves, but for those with whom we live and for those whose lives touch ours. * Wisdom is the ability to disagree without being disagreeable. * Wisdom is humility. A wise person is able to say, "I am sorry." And when he is proven right, he does not have to say, "I told you so." * Wisdom is the ability to make a decision, to act on that decision, and to accept full responsibility for the outcome. * Wisdom means dependability, integrity, keeping one's word. The immature have excuses for everything. They are the chronically tardy, the no-shows, the gutless wonders who fold in the crises. There lives are a maze of broken promises, unfinished business, and former friends. * Wisdom is the ability to live in peace with that which we cannot change. If you do not serve, you injure others. If you do, you injure yourself. Ignorance of this dilemma is the death of the soul. Freedom for this dilemma is eternal life. The Heart of the Enlightened Anthony demello, S.J., 1991 Have a safe, God filled summer. THE OTHER BENCH from Jim Chevalier From the birth of Jesus until His death on the cross, Mary made her awesome journey with Jesus in the deepest faith. As she held the lifeless body of Jesus in her arms, it was only her faith that gave her the courage to go on. It was with faith that she embraced St. John as her son, since it was the wish of her dying child. Somehow, though perhaps only dimly at first, she came to understand that the suffering and death of her Son would bring about the salvation of the world and fulfill God s will. Her faith s reward was the joy of experiencing His risen presence. The Church hails Mary as the Immaculate Mother of Jesus, but there is still more. The Church reveres her as its first and finest disciple, because of the depth of her faith. While yet under the cross, she received John as her child, as well. Indeed, in that moment, she embraced each of us who has faith in her Son. Each one of us is privileged to call her Mother. Mother Mary, we pray that our faith may be strengthened especially in the difficult moments of our life. And, encouraged by your maternal love, may we strive to follow the Lord, as you did so valiantly. SERVANT TO MANY from Gary Prise On May 20, a massive tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma. The pictures we saw on TV only scratch the surface of the actual devastation that occurred. The reports that we heard in some cases troubled me greatly, some of them came from religious leaders of that community. Some indicated that God was behind the death and destruction; that God caused what occurred. I question those people who see that this act of nature as caused by God: Why would God choose to affect this community the way it was affected? Why would God choose to take children from their parents? What could these children possibly have done to deserve what they received? A common theme of the Gospel and Letters of John is love. If we believe God is the author of life and love then what occurred could not have come from God. I believe God was there before, during, and after; but I do not think the God I have come to know caused such pain and suffering. The God who became one of us in Jesus, came to relieve pain and suffering, to give us life now and forever. This is the God of love. It appears the National Relief Network trip scheduled for the week of July 22, will be going to Moore, Oklahoma. If you would like to become involved, please contact either Margaret Callaghan or myself for more information on how you can make the God of love a reality for this community.

6 YOUTH NEWS from Margaret Callaghan Congratulations to the graduating class of 2013! As you move into your next phase of education and journey through life, we pray for your success. Whether you are staying home and commuting to school or moving out and away, we pray that God will bless with you with courage, good friends and strength. Stay true to who you are and always include God in your decisions, the good times and the not so good times. Best wishes and good luck! It will be nice to see all of you and pray for you as a parish during the 9 am Liturgy on June 2. Be sure to wear your cap and gown! Afterward there will be a reception in the community room so that everyone can come and congratulate you. As we bid farewell to the graduates, we look forward to a busy couple of months. First we are looking forward to our annual trip to Cedar Point along with the Diocese of Lansing. We will travel by bus on Wednesday June 26 from St. John s in Hartland with 3 more youth groups. The cost is $60 for the bus, your ticket and snacks on the bus. me at yminister1@gmail.com for a permission slip and details. All high school students are welcome. Sunday June 9, marks are last meeting for the year. It is traditionally a BBQ/Pool Party/Potluck. We will gather together off-site at the Wagner s home in. Information has been handed out with the address. Hotdogs, burgers, all plastic and paper products plus drinks will be provided. Please bring a dish to pass and make sure to RSVP with me so we know how many to expect. We will meet from 6-9 pm. Many will be participating in the MIS fundraiser June During the weekend we are responsible for cleaning under the grandstands. Although it is mundane work, it is fun! I believe that no matter what the task, if you are with friends then the work is bearable. We will camp for the two nights we are there. The money raised will be used to help defray the cost of our summer service trip and the National Catholic Youth Conference in November. Our summer service trip with National Relief Network will take us to Moore, Oklahoma, to clean up from the tornado. We will be with the youth from St. John s in Hartland and the youth from St. Joe s in Dexter. There is still room if your plans have changed and you are now available. This is a great opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus; to serve those in need. We physically do work and at the same time spread hope and love. Sometimes we may do nothing but simply listen to their stories and share their burden. Contact me and I can share more about the trip with you if you are interested. On a short personal note, I will not be participating in Cedar Point or the service trip this year. The teens will be in good hands for both trips but as for me, I will be home. Tom is undergoing surgery mid June to amputate the lower part of his left leg. It s a complicated explanation but this is the only resolution. We are looking forward to moving on with this procedure. Once the prosthetic is fitted and he is fully recovered, life will resume to what it was before this all started. MAGDALEN S LITTLE PEOPLE from Kathie Anderer Our school year has come to a close. We had a great time this year and made many memories. This last month we had a fire drill, a tornado drill, a field trip to Bordine Nursery, Mother s Day Tea, Daddy Donut Day, a visit from the fire department and State Police and our last day picnic. So much fun so little time to fit it all in. Sign up for next year is going on now. Let us know if we can be of service to you or someone you know. We have a few openings left in our 3 year old class if anyone knows of someone who is looking. Please call the preschool line for more information (810) Leave a message with your phone number and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Our Open House Sunday is set for September 15. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Have a great and safe summer! We ll be back before you know it.

7 INNER SILENCE makes possible our conversation with God from Diane Kubus Taizé If you would like a relaxing contemplative time of quiet prayer away from the pressures and loudness of life, join us for Taizé prayer. It s on a Friday evening, once a month, at 8pm. You will need to watch our calendar for the dates. Next Service: Friday, June 7. Taizé is located in the south of Burgundy, France. It s the home of an international, ecumenical community made up of over a hundred brothers, (Catholics and from various Protestant backgrounds,) from more than twenty five nations. They are committed to a great simplicity of life. Since the late 1950s, many thousands of young adults from many countries have found their way to Taizé to take part in meetings of prayer and reflection. At the heart of daily life in Taizé is the common prayer. The structure of the prayer is similar to that of the "Divine Office" from the Catholic monastic tradition consisting of a hymn, psalms, Scripture reading and intercessions. The spirituality of Taizé is a spirituality that is firmly rooted in the great Christian tradition of the past, yet it is open to the contemporary world, but most of all it is centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Taizé Evening Prayer we celebrate is done in this traditional format in the darkened chapel where candlelight illuminates icons of Christ and the Saints. It consists of songs, psalms, Scripture, the Lord s Prayer, intercessions, and periods of silence and is approximately 45 minutes. It is the Word of God set to music; its constant, gentle, repetitive quality allows contemplation and prayer on the sentiments that it expresses. An essential part of the prayer is silence. Inner silence makes possible our conversation with God. For the voice of God is often heard only in a whisper, in a breath of silence. Remaining in silence in God s presence, we may be open to the Holy Spirit. Visit Taizé s website: to learn more about the ecumenical community and its prayer.
