2 Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 Worship 10:25 am Greetings: No matter who you are or where you are on your life journey, you are welcome here. The Blue Sheet inserted in this bulletin has two sides. One side is for you to record prayer requests. The other side is for guests who would like to share information about themselves with the church. Worship Notes: * denotes all who are able are invited to stand Below is the result of the vision discernment process completed by HUCC s congregation and Vision Team. The Vision Statement was approved by the Gift Team Board on April 27, We are a vibrant and progressive Christian community embracing inclusivity and diversity with all who seek to enrich their spiritual journey. Welcome Missions and Ministries WORSHIP BEGINS IN PREPARATION *Passing the Peace (Welcome those immediately around you into this time of worship.) Meditation (GREETING: The Peace of Christ be with you. RESPONSE: And also with you.) According to the United Church of Christ s liturgual calendar, today is Amistad Sunday. In 1839, 55 Africans who had been captured in the slave trade struck out for their freedom while being transported out of Havana, Cuba, on a schooner called La Amistad. The captives successfully took over the ship and ordered the crew to sail back to Africa, but weeks later the ship ended up far north, at the tip of Long Island, New York. U.S. officials boarded the ship, arrested the captives and jailed them in Connecticut. There they were befriended by Christian abolitionists, many belonging to churches that are now part of the United Church of Christ. The abolitionists hired lawyers, including former President John Quincy Adams, to appeal the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declared the captives free in What would Jesus do? Stand with the prisoners of the Amistad.

Prayer of Confession Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. A handicap restroom is located beyond the door in front of the sanctuary. Other restrooms are located downstairs. A baby and parent area is located in the rear of the sanctuary near the elevator. A nursery for infants and toddlers is available during the service. Off street parking is available directly behind the church and down the alley. Do not use the parking lot across the alley, that is for the apartment residents.
