MUSIC IN WORSHIP This morning s opening hymn, No. 339 Lift Every Voice and Sing, has become the official song of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The hymn was written in the early 20th century by Florida-born brothers James Weldon and J. Rosamond Johnson. Although the hymn bears special meaning for African Americans, it profoundly evokes images of hope and faith with which all who love freedom can readily identify. The 11:00 a.m. Offertory, We Shall Overcome, was one of the most powerful protest songs of the 20 th century. It has been attributed as being lyrically descended from a gospel hymn written by Charles Tindley and published in 1900, titled I ll Overcome Some Day. It was first used as a protest song in 1945, when striking tobacco workers in Charleston, SC sang it on their picket line. By the 1950s the song had been discovered by young activists of the African-American civil rights movement, and it quickly became the movement s unofficial anthem. Folk singers such as Pete Seeger and Joan Baez programmed the song at rallies and folk festivals, helping make it widely known. People sang it in protest marches and sit-ins, through clouds of tear gas and under rows of police batons, and it brought courage and comfort to the bruised, frightened and hopeful activists. In the decades following the 1960s, We Shall Overcome has been embraced by civil rights and pro-democracy movements in dozens of nations worldwide. From Northern Ireland to Eastern Europe, from Berlin to Beijing, and from South Africa to South America, its message of solidarity and

12 hope has been sung in dozens of languages, in presidential palaces and in dark prisons, and it continues to lend its strength to all people struggling to be free. Today s arrangement was written by Tom Trenney, preacher, composer, organist and conductor. He currently serves as Minister of Music at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
