Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 656 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Order of Service - Divine Service Setting One - p. 151 In the name of the Father and of the TSon and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Alleluia! hrist is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! MAY 6, :00 AM & 10:30AM ST. AUL S LUTHERAN HURH ONORDIA, MO
2 Introit (Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) ome and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. Blessèd be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from. me! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. ome and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. Kyrie - p. 152 (sung) (Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) In peace let us pray to the Lord. For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the hurch of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us praise to the Lord. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen. Martin Luther s understanding of this Biblical teaching created a ripple effect through both the church and society of his day. What do people understand justification to mean in our time? eople are called on to justify their actions when they come under criticism or scrutiny. This Bible study explores four commonly held beliefs that do not justify a person before God. In understanding and correcting these unjustifiable faiths, we will be reminded again what truly justifies us.this class is led by astor Michael and meets Sunday mornings in May at 9:15 in the gym. 3 Sip, Savor, and Drink Deeply The idea of a coffee break is enticing, isn t it? Even if coffee isn t your beverage of choice, you look forward to downtime, especially if it is spent with a friend who wants your company. Jesus is such a friend. The Lord wants our company. He invites us to meet with Him in His Word. Join us in Bible Study on Monday mornings from 9:00-10:00am and drink deeply from His word. We are starting this study on Monday, May 7th. Books will be provided at no cost. Bring a favorite coffee cup and we will Take a Sip! For more information or questions call Kathy Schnakenberg, Rogate Sunday May 13th Rogation is connected to the Latin word for asking, and refers to a traditional time of praying for agriculture. Historically, this has been celebrated during the sixth week of Easter as hristians pray for planting and for those working with the land. In rural areas, many people take time out of this busy time of year to bless the elements used in farming, the fields, the seeds and the animals. It is a time to challenge congregation members to think carefully about the food they eat, their care of God s blessings and resources. On Sunday, May 13th we will have a special service of blessing for the work our local farmers and gardeners do. The parking lot behind the church will be reserved for those in our congregation to bring their tractors, implements, seed, or other elements of their operations. We will have a special service of blessing outside (weather permitting) with asking for God to bless the work of our hands. Sunday School children are asked to join in the blessing event prior to Sunday School beginning. The blessing event will be held in the gym if there is inclement weather. Saint aul Lutheran High School will be hosting a Boys basketball grade school camp June 11 th through June 15 th from 8:30-10 am at Weis Gym on the campus of Saint aul. Alleluia. ollect of the Day (rayer that collects the theme of the day) The Lord be with you. And also with you. (sung) Almighty God, grant that we who have been redeemed from the old life of sin through Baptism into the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus hrist, may be renewed in Your Holy Spirit and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen. First Lesson Acts 10:34 48 eter preaches the Gospel to the Gentiles, and they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 34 eter opened his mouth and said: Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus hrist (he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. 44 While eter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with eter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then eter declared, 47 an anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus hrist. Then they asked him to remain for some days. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3
4 Anthem - St. aul s 6-8 Grade hoir Everywhere I Go Second Lesson 1 John 5:1 8 To love God means to believe that Jesus is the hrist and to obey His commands. 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the hrist has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he who came by water and blood Jesus hrist; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia Verse p. 156 (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Reading John 15:9-17 The Holy Gospel according to St. John the fifteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. (sung) Jesus calls His disciples His friends and instructs them to obey His commands and love one another. 9 [Jesus said:] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. She handled the situation with grace and dignity never wavering in her faith. She is now at peace in heaven with our heavenly Father. A special thank you goes to the ladies that hosted and those that contributed to the funeral luncheon. I am proud to be a member of the family of believers at St. aul s. ~Robert. Frerking Family Footnotes Today we celebrate with the confirmands as they have reached a milestone in their faith journey, their confirmation. They have heard it repeated that this is most certainly not an ending, but a beginning. They will be moving on to high school and facing new challenges. They will be encountering life experiences and making more decisions. Those words of promise that they have studied and memorized will hopefully be put into practice as they seek God s Word for comfort and advice in daily living. lease pray for them as they continue on their faith journey, that they would grow stronger in their relationship with their Savior, that they would show the love of Jesus that they have in their hearts, and that they will keep hrist as their focus. God s blessings to you, onfirmands. May you take to heart the words of salm 105:4, Look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always. ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director 8 Sermon Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 594 God s Own hild, I Gladly Say It Sermon - Blue Water, Red Blood Nicene reed (8:00am) (See back inside cover of the hymnal.) Rite of onfirmation (10:30am) (See Insert) rayer of the hurch After each petition: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Service of the Sacrament (The service continues on p. 160 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. aul offers in 1 orinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran hurch Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request.
