If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.

2 P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Introit (Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! P Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! P Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble. P He raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. P The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. P Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of men! Hymn of Praise - This Is the Feast (p. 155) (The song of praise to Jesus the Lamb, who was slain, from Revelation 5) This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Worthy is hrist, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Power, riches, wisdom and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ollect of the Day (Prayer that collects the theme of the day) P The Lord be with you. And also with you. (sung) P Let us pray. Grant us so firmly to believe in Your Son Jesus that our faith may never be found wanting; through the same Jesus hrist, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (sung) Verse of the Month Psalm 93:2 Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. First Lesson 1 Kings 17:8 16 This chapter begins the story of Elijah. God sends a drought on Israel because of the sins of King Ahab. This passage depicts God s saving acts not only on behalf of Elijah, but also on behalf of those who are associated with the prophet, even a foreigner, the widow of Zarephath. 8 Then the word of the LORD came to [Elijah], 9 Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you. 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. 12 And she said, As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die. 13 And Elijah said to her, Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the LORD the God of Israel, The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth. 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. P This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle Lesson Hebrews 9:24 28 When hrist first came to earth, He suffered and died to take away the sins of His people. When hrist returns, He will bring the full and complete experience of this salvation. 24 For hrist has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he 10 3

4 has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so hrist, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. P This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia Verse p. 156 (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Reading Mark 12:38-44 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the twelfth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. (sung) In contrast to the false piety of the religious leaders, a widow shows her whole-hearted commitment to God by giving her last coins as an offering to the Lord. 38 In his teaching [Jesus] said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. 41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O hrist. (sung) Sermon Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 787 The Temple Rang with Golden oins Sermon - Ready to Share Upcoming Adult Bible lasses November 18: "The What, Who, and When of Thankfulness." As we prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, Pastor Michael will lead a discussion as we consider these questions: What should we be thankful for? Who should see our thankfulness? and When should we be thankful? November 25: Pastor Michael will share about his experiences and lessons from his recent trip to Ethiopia with Lutheran Bible Translators. December 2-23: "The hristmas Story: From Four Perspectives." This study attempts to explore how each Gospel in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) give us a different perspective--a different lens--through which to see the hristmas story, the birth and beginnings of Jesus hrist. Each Gospel's emphasis is different, and by studying them both individually and side by side, we catch deeper glimpses into this marvelous event, that God the Father would send His Son to take on human flesh, that God would become a baby who would grow into a man who would die our death and then be raised for our everlasting life. 5 Thanksgiving Worship: More than a day for family, friends, and food, Thanksgiving Day is a time for prayer. As God s people, we come before Him with words and songs of prayer, praising Him for all His gifts and blessings. Our thanksgiving services are a time to remember some of those gifts and blessings and to return to God our heartfelt thanks. We will reflect upon and give thanks for life and our material blessings, our nation, and the fact that in Jesus hrist we will enjoy the great spiritual harvest. Before you share Thanksgiving dinner, invite family and friends to join us for worship Wednesday, November 21, at 7:00 pm or Thanksgiving Day, November 22, at 9:30 am. Thanksgiving Worship at the Good Shepherd are ommunity (GS) In addition to our Thanksgiving worship in our sanctuary on Thanksgiving Eve and Day, you also have the option of worship on Wednesday, November 21, at 10 am, at the GS. This service includes Holy ommunion. (NOTE: There is no communion service at the GS on Thursday, November 15.) Family Footnotes "Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. Faith is the belief that God will do what is right." This is a quote I heard in one of our faculty devotions a few weeks ago. God s promises are most certainly true, but it is the painstaking process of earthly circumstances that sometime wear on us. Psalm 40:1 says, I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. Patiently...patiently...patiently. Sometimes that valley seems awfully deep and lonely and what patience you have left is unraveling at an alarming rate. You wonder if God still hears the prayer you have been repeating over and over. Know this, dear friend, He most certainly does. Our hope rests in God s promises. Our hope rests in His Son, Jesus. Hope is not ignoring reality. Hope is acknowledging reality, but in that same instant knowing and believing that God has a plan, a plan greater than us, a plan that we may not be able to fathom, but nonetheless a plan that will reveal His glory and perfect will. Know that in the middle of our storms we are His dearly beloved children, and He will not abandon us. Psalm 40:4 says, Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust. Many times we forget that this kind of trust is forged in the fire. God is not picking on us, He is personally picking us to live out His glory in the midst of our circumstances as He equips us to carry out His will. Dear Lord, we are thankful today and always for the ways in which You provide for us and bless us daily. We are in awe of Your magnificence. Help us to know that You are there for us even when our circumstances scream otherwise. Enable us to hear Your voice of truth above the roar of the world. Help us to know that You created us each uniquely to serve You. (Quote taken from Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado). ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director Offering and Rite of Fellowship (Please record your attendance on the friendship register in each pew and pass the register down the pew so all may record their attendance.) Prayer of the hurch After each petition: P Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. (The 8:00am service will conclude with the Lord s Prayer, Benediction, and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 894 For the Fruits of His reation.) Service of the Sacrament (The 10:30am service continues on p. 160 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 orinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran hurch Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. Adults and children who have not yet been baptized or instructed in the hristian faith are invited to come forward and receive a spoken blessing at the altar rail. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request.
