3 Congregation Forum: Add Your Voice As part of our congregation s strategic planning process, Pastor Michael will be facilitating congregation forums. All members of all ages are encouraged to participate. He will have questions for the group, and you can ask questions of him. These conversations are meant to sharpen our focus on our shared ministry as a congregation. Join us for the last forum on: Thursday, August 30 Forum will begin at 6:30 pm, and will be held in the Parish Office. Each forum will last approximately 90 minutes. Throughout this process, please be in prayer for the guiding wisdom of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord continue to lead and bless the work of our church and school for the sake of our community and world. 4 Epistle Lesson Ephesians 5:22 33 God s people are to submit to one another out of reverence for Jesus Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 2 6that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. Gospel Reading Mark 7:1-13 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventh chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Jesus corrects the religious leaders whose laws contradicted God s commandments. 1 When the Pharisees gathered to [Jesus], with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands? 6 And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men. 9 And he said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 4 Fall LifeLight Classes The Book of Acts Classes meet once a week for nine weeks. Grace Day is Saturday, October 6, and the wonderful theme for the day remains the same as previous years: Everything is free just like God's grace. We are hoping to offer a variety of free things to the community, such as lunch that day, blood pressure checks, hair cuts, car wash, activities for children, massages, fruits and vegetables, pictures with our comfort dog Jesse, LERT trailer display, visits from the police and fire departments, and entertainment (singers or instrumentalists). These are just some of the things we have done in the past. If you have other ideas of what we can offer for free that day, please share! Seasonal Migrant Farmworkers are once again back in the area. Several years ago, our congregation volunteered to help in filling and distributing commodities to these seasonal workers. We will be helping again on the following Mondays September 24 and October 22. Distribution is done at the Head Start in Lexington in the early evening. We try to arrive in Lexington between 4:30-5:00pm and are back in town by 8:00pm at the latest. They do take donations of canned goods (green beans, corn, peas, soups, tomato products, etc.), dried pinto beans, white rice (not instant rice), dry dinners (mac and cheese, hamburger and tuna helper, ramen noodles), brown paper grocery bags, t-shirts, men s long sleeve light shirts, men s and women s shorts or jeans, sweat shirts, sweaters, etc. If you would like to help with distribution or donate items, please contact Karol Meyer for more information. Items can be dropped off at the church office. Thanks! Concordia Seminary Recruitment Visit Have you ever considered becoming a pastor or deaconess? If so, Rev. 5 2nd Grade Bible Milestone In an effort to continue promoting the faith in the home, Family Life would like to invite all second graders and their parents to the 2nd Grade Bible Milestone, Sunday, September 2, during the Sunday school hour from 9:15-10:15 a.m. We look forward to seeing you as you receive your first big kid bible. Young Adult Prayers (YAP) YAP This week, please keep Emily Aversman, daughter of John & Denise Aversman in your prayers as she begins her sophomore year at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. Emily is studying nursing. Emily has applied to serve as a Young Adult Volunteer at the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis in July She is a 2017 graduate of Saint Paul Lutheran High School and her college address is available in the church office if you would like to send her a note of encouragement. I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) Hymn of the Day - Lutheran Service Book # 585 Lord Jesus Christ, with Us Abide Sermon Junk Food Family Footnotes Several of my devotions this week have talked about the struggles of staying focused upon what is truly important in this business we call life. We forget that each day is a blessing and each breath is a gift as we face deadlines, car lines, and lunch lines. We can become so wrapped up in the cacophony of chaos swarming around us that we forget to slow down and simply sing our praises to God and enjoy what He has set before us. And the things that we wrap ourselves up in are not necessarily bad things. Sometimes we are too busy working for God that we forget to walk with Him. Sometimes we ask God to bless the work that we are doing, but then forget to join God in what He is already doing! We can t build a fortress if we don t have the solid ground upon which to build. Psalm 127:1a says, Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain, and Matthew 7:24 says, Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Search for solid ground. Stake your claim upon the solid rock of Christ. Cling to His promises during the storms, and praise Him purposefully for His daily provisions. 6 Service of the Sacrament (The 10:30am service continues on p. 208 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors.
