PAUL S LUTHERAN CHURCH CONCORDIA, MO P Pastor C Congregation/All T All may make the sign of the cross to remember their baptism. Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 717 Eternal Father, Strong to Save Order of Service - Divine Service Setting Three - p. 184 P In the name of the Father and of the ϯ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the ϯ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

2 Introit (Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, C and he delivered them from their distress. P He made the storm be still, C and the waves of the sea were hushed. P Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, C and he brought them to their desired haven. P Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, C for his wondrous works to the children of men! P Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, C and praise him in the assembly of the elders. P Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, C and he delivered them from their distress. Gloria Patri - p.186 (sung) (Gloria Patri is Latin for Glory to the Father. The Church has added this praise of the Trinity to Psalms and other liturgical items for centuries.) C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Kyrie - p. 186 (sung) (Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Bible Class Today - June 24 "Law and Gospel." Pastor Michael will lead a discussion about the two most fundamental teachings in the Bible: Law and Gospel. Old Testament Lesson Job 38:1 11 Job is reminded that the LORD is in control of His creation. 1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, 9 when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed? P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Lesson 2 Corinthians 6:1 13 Saint Paul and his companions work among the Corinthian people as God s servants. 1 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no obstacle in anyone s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; 7 by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and 3

4 behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. 13 In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse - p. 190 (sung) (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gospel Reading Mark 4:35-41 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourth chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. (sung) Jesus calms a storm, demonstrating His divine power to help and to save. 35 On that day, when evening had come, [Jesus] said to them, Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him? P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. (sung) Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) Hymn of the Day - Lutheran Service Book # 715 Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me Sermon When the Waves Are Rough Offertory - p.192 (sung) 4 MATCHING GIFT OPPORTUNITY HAS EXPANDED A second faithful member of St. Paul s Lutheran Church has offered a dollar for dollar matching gift challenge for debt reduction of up to $25, If the remainder of our membership can collectively give up to $50,000.00, this amount would then be matched by these generous donors making a total of $100, Simply write a check payable to St. Paul s Lutheran Church, separate from your normal contribution, insert it into a debt reduction envelope (these can be found in the church narthex and the church office), and place it in the collection plate or drop it by the church office. What a terrific way to double your contribution, and help further the ministry at St. Paul s. Every dollar not dedicated to repaying our debt can be used in ministries to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus and reach more people with an experience of the goodness of God s love. Praise be to God for such generous, loving, caring individuals. MATCHING GIFT UPDATE After the first Sunday, we had members step up to the matching gift challenge in the amount of $16, After the match, that is an increase to our operating budget of $33, Can we make it to $100,000.00? Commissioning of VBS Leaders Commissioning of Sr High Youth Servant Trip Attendees Prayer of the Church After each petition: P Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. Family Footnotes A couple of my devotions this week have dealt with soul stretching. I like this phrase. I think it is very descriptive of what we go through at times. God allows our souls to be stretched, to go above and beyond what we think we can handle, to prepare us for what lies ahead. Sometimes these soul stretching exercises are just the warm ups for what awaits us around the corner. And when we think that we can t be stretched anymore, our Lord gives us the strength to persevere. He gives us the opportunity to solely rely on Him and to see His glory and power in the midst of our struggles. This soul stretching is what builds faith and trust. When we are fatigued from the race of life, our Lord promises to be there to pick us up. When we hit that wall and think that there is no way to continue forward, Jesus is there. Will we turn toward Him or away from Him? And then in the midst of our storm, we have to be willing to wait for the answers. Sometimes the clear answers don t come, but you know what is more important than the answers? The presence of our Savior. Let s not let our situations blind us to His presence. Can we approach situations that look hopeless and see that the Lord lives even in the middle of these circumstances? That takes some soul searching, but He most certainly does dwell in the center of these swirling storms. Hold fast to His teachings, pray for spiritual sight to see Him in the middle of the mess, and continue to press forward being a witness for Him. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25 (Reflections upon a devotion from Lutheran Church Charities entitled, Are You Being Stretched? ) ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director (The 8:00am service will conclude with the Lord s Prayer, Benediction and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 718 Jesus, Lead Thou On.) Service of the Sacrament (The 10:30am service continues on p. 194 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request. 8 5
