PAUL S LUTHERAN CHURCH CONCORDIA, MO P Pastor C Congregation/All T All may make the sign of the cross to remember their baptism. Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 658 Preserve Your Word, O Savior Order of Service - Divine Service Setting Four - p. 203 P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

2 Introit (Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; C forget not the afflicted. P The LORD is king forever and ever; C the nations perish from his land. P O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; C you will strengthen their heart; P you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, C so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; C forget not the afflicted. Kyrie - p. 204 (sung) (Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) C Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy: Lord, have mercy. Gloria in Excelsis (sung) (A hymn of praise based on the angel s song in Luke 2) C To God on high be glory And peace to all the earth; Goodwill from God in heaven Proclaimed at Jesus' birth! We praise and bless You, Father; Your holy name we sing Our thanks for Your great glory, Lord God, our heav'nly King. To You, O sole-begotten, The Father's Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, You take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; Receive our heartfelt cry, Where You in pow'r are seated At God's right hand on high For You alone are holy, You only are the Lord. Forever and forever, Be worshiped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit Alone are Lord Most High, In God the Father's glory. "Amen!" our glad reply. Collect of the Day (Prayer that collects the theme of the day) P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. 2 Bible Class Today - February 3 Adult Bible Study How We Got the Bible?" - Maybe one of your New Year's Resolutions is to read and study the Bible more regularly. Verse of the Month Psalm 138:7 C Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life;.and your right hand delivers me. Old Testament Lesson Exodus 35:4-5a, In preparation for the construction of the tabernacle, the people of Israel contribute various special gifts. 4 Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 5 Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord s contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; 20 Then all the congregation of the people of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. 21 And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord s contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the Lord. 23 And every one who possessed blue or purple or scarlet yarns or fine linen or goats hair or tanned rams skins or goatskins brought them. 24 Everyone who could make a contribution of silver or bronze brought it as the Lord s contribution. And every one who possessed acacia wood of any use in the work brought it. 25 And every skillful woman spun with her hands, and they all brought what they had spun in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. 26 All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats hair. 27 And the leaders brought onyx stones and stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, 28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Lesson 2 Corinthians 8:1-15 Saint Paul highlights the extreme generosity of the Christians in Macedonia who, even in their impoverished state, contributed greatly to the special offering for the Christians suffering in Jerusalem. 1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can 3

4 testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints 5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6 Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. 7 But as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you see that you excel in this act of grace also. 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse - p. 205 (sung) (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Reading Matthew 20:1-16 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twentieth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Jesus tells the parable (story) of the workers in the vineyard. Those who worked all day are annoyed that those who worked only one hour receive the same wage. 1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and to them he said, You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you. 5 So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, Why do you stand here idle all day? 7 They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You go into the vineyard too. 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first. 4 Third Grade Catechism Milestone Family Life would like to invite all third graders and their parents to a special Catechism Milestone on Sunday, February 10, in the back room of the Parish office during the Sunday school hour (9:15-10:15). Devotions Feb. 3-9 will lead the listener to consider God-pleasing forms of giving. Take a few moments each day for a spiritual devotion. Dial And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. 13 But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity? 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) Family Footnotes Sometimes you need to talk to a three-year-old just so you can understand life again. I saw this post on facebook a few weeks ago and it made me smile. I listen to the youngsters in our school building, and it is amazing the wisdom that they exhibit! I sometimes look back and think, When did life become so complicated? Does it have to be? We all grow up and become adults and along with that comes a set of responsibilities, but becoming an adult doesn t have to make us less observant to the things around us. It doesn t have to snuff that sense of wonder and awe. Jesus says in Matthew 19:14, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. Jesus talks about greatness being marked by humility and humble trust in the Lord. A child is dependent upon his/her caregiver when they are young, and that is exactly how God wants us to be...completely dependent upon Him. We are not seeking accolades for ourselves, but instead doing everything out of love for Him. Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven Matthew 18:2-4. Take time today to see the small things that God has put in front of you, and be thankful for those things. Ask a three or four year old what they are thankful for, and I bet your perspective will change. Dear Lord, I thank you for those little things that you stick into each day for my enjoyment. Thank you for those blessings. Help You to be my first choice so that when trials come, I know where to run. You are my Heavenly Father and it is You who provides, grants me strength, and comforts me. Forgive me when I pass by You and try to do it on my own. Grant me a heart that continually seeks You. In Your name I pray, Amen. ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director Sermon Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 644 The Church s One Foundation Sermon - [re]committed to My Church Offering and Rite of Fellowship (Please record your attendance on the friendship register in each pew and pass the register down the pew so all may record their attendance.) Installation of 2019 Board and Team Members Prayer of the Church After each petition: P Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. (The 10:30am service will conclude with the Lord s Prayer, Benediction, and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 828 We Are Called to Stand Together.) 8 5

6 Service of the Sacrament (The 8:00am service continues on p. 208 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. Adults and children who have not yet been baptized or instructed in the Christian faith are invited to come forward and receive a spoken blessing at the altar rail. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request.
