Congregation Forums: Add Your Voice As part of our congregation s strategic planning process, Pastor Michael will be facilitating congregation forums. All members of all ages are encouraged to participate. He will have questions for the group, and you can ask questions of him. These conversations are meant to sharpen our focus on our shared ministry as a congregation. Join us at any one of these three forums: Wednesday, August 22 Thursday, August 30 Forums will begin at 6:30 pm, and will be held in the Parish Office. Each forum will last approximately 90 minutes. Throughout this process, please be in prayer for the guiding wisdom of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord continue to lead and bless the work of our church and school for the sake of our community and world. 2

3 Seasonal Migrant Farmworkers are once again back in the area. Several years ago, our congregation volunteered to help in filling and distributing commodities to these seasonal workers. We will be helping again on the following Mondays, August 27, September 24 and October 22. Distribution is done at the Head Start in Lexington in the early evening. We try to arrive in Lexington between 4:30-5:00pm and are back in town by 8:00pm at the latest. They do take donations of canned goods (green beans, corn, peas, soups, tomato products, etc.), dried pinto beans, white rice (not instant rice), dry dinners (mac and cheese, hamburger and tuna helper, ramen noodles), brown paper grocery bags, t-shirts, men s long sleeve light shirts, men s and women s shorts or jeans, sweat shirts, sweaters, etc. If you would like to help with distribution or donate items, please contact Karol Meyer for more information. Items can be dropped off at the church office. Thanks! Concordia Seminary Recruitment Visit Have you ever considered becoming a pastor or deaconess? If so, Rev. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Young Adult Prayers (YAP) This week, please keep Anna Colwell, daughter of Clint and Jody Colwell in your prayers. She is heading back to Central Methodist University this fall where she will be in her 2 nd semester of her Junior year. She is in their nursing program and she is also a manager for the CMU track team. Anna graduated from SPLHS in 2016 and her college address is available in the church office if you would like to send her a note of encouragement. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you Colossians 1:3 Fall LifeLight Classes The Book of Acts Classes meet once a week for nine weeks. Grace Day is Saturday, October 6, and the wonderful theme for the day remains the same as previous years: Everything is free just like God's grace. We are hoping to offer a variety of free things to the community, such as lunch that day, blood pressure checks, hair cuts, car wash, activities for children, massages, fruits and vegetables, pictures with our comfort dog Jesse, LERT trailer display, visits from the police and fire departments, and entertainment (singers or instrumentalists). These are just some of the things we have done in the past. If you have other ideas of what we can offer for free that day, please share! 5 Be a Partner in Prayer. You are invited to join parents, grandparents, and friends of St. Paul s Lutheran School each Monday when school is in session from 8-8:15 am in the Parish Office. Each week, in addition to praying for the general needs of the school, we will pray for students by name one class each week as well as any special prayer requests. Pastor Michael will lead this weekly time for prayer. A guide will be provided. Come any Monday you are able. Participants are not required to pray aloud. Join us Monday mornings beginning August 20. New Worship Series: "Food for Thought." Satisfaction is elusive. Nevertheless, many continually search for satisfaction in many different places. The right job. The right house. The right spouse. The right car. The right breakfast cereal. Here is some food for thought true satisfaction is not found in any earthly item or experience. Jesus Christ is the source of true satisfaction. The gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation He brings are what can and will fill us for eternity. I am the bread of life, Jesus says. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty (John 6:35 NIV). Family Footnotes How many of you have set your alarms readying yourself for a spectacular event that you are expecting to see in the night sky? I m talking about meteor showers. The Perseid Meteor shower took place about one week ago today on August 12. Reports said that there could be observations of meteors per hour if the conditions were right. I went out around midnight that night, but unfortunately did not catch a glimpse of any meteors. A total loss? Hardly! As I was standing outside peering up into the night sky giving my eyes time to adjust, I marveled at just what an amazing Creator we have. The night sky always dwarfs me when I start to think about our little earth in the vastness of the universe, which brings me to the point of my writing...it s not about me. It s always about God. So much of our thinking today revolves around ourselves...self-promotion, self-centeredness, self-preservation. King David proclaimed in Psalm 19:1, The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork, and if the heavens exist to proclaim God s glory, shouldn t we also? A quote from a book I am reading says it this way, He (God) does not reveal His glory for His good. We need to witness it for ours. That is exactly what Jesus spent his entire earthly life doing...witnessing about his Father. Reflecting the Lord s glory. That is something beautiful. The moon has no light of its own, but reflects the sun s light, and because of that it is a beautiful piece of work. We are a beautiful piece of work in God s eyes because of what Jesus did. Shouldn t we also reflect the glory of our Father? Simply put, promote God! How will I reveal God s glory in my life today? 6 Service of the Sacrament (The 8:00am service continues on p. 208 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups.
