6 SERVIE OF THE WORD First Reading: Acts 1:1-11 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. 8 RAYERS OF THE HURH With joyful hearts, Lord, we bring You our prayers this day. We remember Your acts of kindness to Your people through all ages. We bless you for Your saving power shown to all people through the resurrection of Your Son, Jesus hrist, our Lord. As Your Holy Spirit works among us, may we give bold testimony to the resurrection of hrist in our words and deeds. For Your mercy's sake, Lord, hear our prayer. In this season of new life we pray for our world and for all people who share it. Enable us to be courageous witnesses to hrist Jesus as were the faithful women and the blessed apostles in the days and weeks after the first Easter. May the salvation of hrist be made known to all peoples throughout the world. For Your love's sake, Lord, hear our prayer. As we gather for worship together, we pray not only for this assembly but for the whole hurch on earth. Bless her leaders with resolute faithfulness and all believers with the gifts of the Spirit, that the Lord's work may be administered in truth and received joyfully. For Your mercy's sake, Lord, hear our prayer. As we plead for mercy for all people who bear the weight of countless illnesses and ailments in mind, body, and spirit we remember all those with special needs: the sick, the shut-in, and the downtrodden (including ).
