1 St. Anne Catholic Community The Clarion First Sunday of Advent Volume 10, No. 1 ~ This People is the House of God ~ December 1, 2013

2 Our Parish Mission and Core Values: Led by the Spirit, the Catholic community of St. Anne strives to live the example of Jesus, who said, I came so that you might have life, and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) As a united community of believers, we gather in worship, prayer, celebration and fellowship to deepen our relationship with God and one another. Whenever two or more are gathered in my name, I am with you. (Matthew 18:20) As a Christian community, we invite and welcome all and are enriched by their presence. Love one another as I have loved you. (John 13:34) As people of faith, we value and encourage lifelong faith formation as essential to spiritual growth. Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18) As a community of disciples, we promise to share ourselves and our resources in God s service. As God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with kindness and humility. (Colossians 3:12) As a community committed to justice, we reach out with compassion to those in need. We are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works. Pastoral Challenges of the Family: Dear People of Saint Anne, Pope Francis has called an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops from around the world to be held in early 2014 to discuss the Pastoral Challenges of the Family. The announcement of this Synod has been different from synods past since its inception. The Pope has indicated that he wants the synod process to be more consultative. Therefore, he has issued a Vatican directive for bishops to listen as widely as possible to views of those they shepherd on issues like wounded families, the divorced and the remarried, interfaith marriages, same sex couples, contraception, the reality of cohabitation and other issues that face family life in the context of the new evangelization. You are able to participate in this Papal consultation by replying honestly to a questionnaire now available in English, Spanish and Polish on the Archdiocesan website at As your pastor, I strongly encourage you to make the half hour necessary to respond to this very important survey. Do so from your own lived experience as a Catholic and person of faith. Why? Because the questions and your answers matter to Pope Francis as he leads our church into the future. This offers you an exciting opportunity to talk about your pastoral needs and those of fellow Catholics in real life situations within our own families, faith community and beyond. In doing so, you will be of great help to the Church in reflecting on the challenges, needs and possibilities of family life in our time. Do not fear to hope and dream, Father Bernie Pietrzak December 1,

4 In the Spirit of the Season you can make a big difference to those less fortunate. Huma ST. ANNE SHARING TREE The Sharing Trees are in the Gathering Space, decorated with paper ornaments listing gifts for those in need. Please take as many ornaments as you wish. Gifts can be returned until Sunday, December 15th, before 12:00 p.m. Experience the spirit of Christmas by participating in the St. Anne Sharing Tree Program. The trees in the Gathering Space have been decorated with paper ornaments, each providing the necessary information for you to make gift purchases. Please select as many ornaments as you wish to give. These gifts will benefit individuals from: St. Frances of Rome families and school St. Martin de Porres Shelter for Women and Children St. Columbanus Food Pantry Project Hope Elgin Community Crisis Center Return wrapped gifts (unless otherwise stated) with the ornaments attached to them to the Gathering Space by Sunday, December 15th, before 12:00 p.m. Gift cards should be dropped off at the rectory or handed to a Mass Coordinator. Please write the amount purchased on the gift cards. Thank you in advance for your generosity in thought, time and expense. This is a busy time for all, but we can assure you that this sharing experience will not only brighten the recipient s Christmas, but it will provide necessities for the year ahead. If there are any questions, contact Ann Guarnieri at or Laura Luby at Thinking ahead to the holidays Sharing 4 St. Anne Church

5 n Concerns PROJECT HOPE HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS Project Hope provides parishioners with the opportunity to sponsor or provide something special to a local family or individual in need at Christmas. These gestures may include providing gifts for a family s young children, contributing food to augment a Christmas meal, giving gift cards for older college students and adults, or providing sleepwear for seniors who reside in a local state-run nursing home. Please take a green ornament from the Sharing Tree in the Gathering Space or call Project Hope at for more information on how you can help. Please bring all Christmas contributions to the Project Hope office E. Franklin Street, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. - no later than Friday, December 13th. A small gesture of kindness freely given this is the spirit of the season. FAITHJUSTICE ADVENT SHARING TREE There is an additional ornament on the Advent Sharing Tree this year. Shaped like gingerbread cookies, these are requests from Faithjustice for Home Depot and Ace Hardware gift cards that will be given to the Community Crisis Center in Elgin. The Crisis Center was selected by Faithjustice because it is local and serves parishioners in Cook, Kane and McHenry Counties who are dealing with domestic violence and other forms of economic crisis. Why hardware gift cards? Imagine in a year s time, how many trips you make to a hardware store for light bulbs, furnace filters, paint, screws, picture hooks, plungers, mop heads, cleaning supplies and a myriad of other general maintenance stuff. Now multiply that number 10 times over. On a daily basis, CCC s shelter is full. That means 40 women and children are living in CCC s shelter every day. Then, there are the full time staff and countless volunteers who come to work every day of the year. All of this activity takes a toll on a building. But, the first thing you notice when you walk through the doors is that this is no ordinary institutional building. It is a home, a safe harbor for all those who come to its doors. 6 Human Concerns HABITAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY At long last, Habitat is asking St. Anne for volunteers to work on the next Habitat house. Permits and professional contractors bids are finally completed. Work inside the house has begun. Oops! The correct dates for volunteers are Saturday, December 7th and Saturday, December 14th. Much of the work has been completed, and if everything goes right this week, a new roof will have been installed before our work begins. Come join the fun. Coffee, donuts and lunch is provided. Because the work is inside, work begins at 8:30 a.m., and usually finishes about 1:00 p.m., at 222 Sioux in Carpentersville (about a 20 minute drive from St. Anne). This house should be much easier to complete quickly. For more information and to join the volunteer workers, or call Mary Jo Martin at , or maryjomartin@comcast.net. Come to our house for the holidays Great gifts, décor, furniture, cookware, linens, clothes and more are arriving daily at House of Hope Resale, all season long! 7 Worship ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED IN OUR MASS CELEBRATIONS? The family-ministered Mass is a great way to introduce your children to the many ways we can all participate in celebrating the liturgy together. Familyministered Masses are generally held the second Sunday of the month at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, and there are many opportunities to join in: Read the first reading Read the petitions Set the table Present the gifts The next date is: Sunday, December 8th For more information or to participate, please contact Anne Horwath at anne@strategyskills.com or or Lisa Koehler at lisakoehler32@gmail.com. FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION Once upon a time, two thousand years ago, in a lowly stable in Bethlehem, the sound of a baby s cry pierced the stillness of that holy night. There, nestled in the loving arms of His adoring Mother, lay the King of Kings, our Savior Jesus Christ. What a precious moment in time to ponder, and ponder we must, because we were presented with the greatest of gifts the Lord and Redeemer of all mankind. What could we possibly give in return for God s outpouring of love? Perhaps the conscious giving of ourselves to Him could be a place to start. Please remain to pray the Rosary after the 8:15 a.m. Mass on Saturday, December 7th, to implore the Mother of God to help us keep Christ in the center of our lives just as she did. NICHOLAS Throughout the centuries, many stories and legends of St. Nicholas life and deeds have been written. The real St. Nicholas was born in 271 A.D., in a place called Asia Minor, now Turkey. Legend reminds us that he was kind and generous to everyone. He was chosen to be a bishop and began shepherding his people with that same kindness and concern, feeding the hungry and helping people in any kind of trouble. It was said that he always showed his people the way to love God and care for each other. It was because of this life of total dedication that he was raised to sainthood. Everyone loved St. Nicholas and continued to tell inspiring stories, especially about his special care for children, helping and protecting them when danger threatened. As more and more people heard about this good bishop with a very positive influence on people, they began to imitate his generous deeds through various types of small gift-giving and religious celebrations. After all these years, we still tell and re-tell interesting legends about St. Nicholas and honor him on his feast day on December 6th each year. St. Nicholas is often looked upon as the traditional beginning of Santa Claus, but his legacy is even more meaningful he gave to those in need from his deep-down love of God and God s people. 11 Faith Formation and Education AS WE BEGIN ADVENT By Sister Lauretta Leipzig, Pastoral Associate/Director of Adult Education Be alert! Wake up! Be vigilant! Change! Advent seems to shout these words at us as we begin our preparation for the feast of Christmas. Rather than my elaborating on these words, I have chosen to include three brief parables written by Anthony de Mello. De Mello has earned international acclaim for his profound spiritual insights and unique approach to the inner spiritual life. Rooted in the spirit of the Gospel and the mystical traditions of East and West, his simple examples are filled with a wisdom that cannot be conveyed in ordinary human speech. I hope that you will find these parables helpful in your ongoing process of selfdiscovery and the satisfying riches that lie deep within all of us. Be Awake The disciples approached the Master and said, Tell us what you got from your enlightened and wise state. Did you become divine? No. Did you become a saint? No. Then what did you become? Awake! How will you wake up, be vigilant during the four weeks of Advent? Be Aware Even though it was the Master s Day of Silence, a traveler begged for a word of wisdom that would guide him through life s journey. The Master nodded affably, took a sheet of paper and wrote a single word on it: Awareness. The visitor was perplexed. That s too brief. Would you please expand on it a bit? The Master took the paper back and wrote: Awareness, awareness. But what do these words mean? said the stranger helplessly. The Master reached out for the paper and wrote: Awareness, awareness, awareness means AWARENESS. Of what should you be aware of that needs identification and reflection in your life this Advent as you prepare your heart for Christmas? Change To a distressed person who came to him for help, the Master said, Do you really want a cure? If I did not, would I bother to come to you? Oh yes. Most people do. What for? Not for a cure. That s painful. For relief. To his disciples, the Master said, People who want a cure, provided they can have it without pain, are like those who favor progress, provided they can have it without change. What do you desire in your life that requires some pain in order to change? December 1,

12 Faith Formation and Education ST. 13 Faith Formation and Education JOURNEY HOSTS A SCAVENGER HUNT FOR FOOD More than 70 middle-school students and 25 parents gathered at St. Anne on Sunday, November 10th, to reflect on Jesus teachings and experience the church s mission to live as the Body of Christ in our world through their participation in Journey s community service project. Groups were given a map of the neighborhood near St. Anne and challenged to go door-to-door on a scavenger hunt for items for the Project Hope Food Pantry. They visited Project Hope along the way and, thanks to volunteer, Peggy Hirsch, learned about ways our parish community responds to Jesus call to help those in need. They were also made aware of opportunities for their family to participate in Project Hope s ministries. Thank you to our Journey members, leaders and parents who participated in our event and collected over fifty bags of food, toiletries and paper goods. Special thanks also to Fr. Tom Bishop who led us in a prayer of blessing, asking that the donors as well as the recipients of these goods might come to know God s presence through this good work and be abundantly blessed! 14 Faith Formation and Education ST. ANNE SCHOOL NEWS 3RD GRADE VISITS SHARING PARISH, ST. FRANCES OF ROME On Tuesday, October 29th, the third grade students from St. Anne Parish School traveled to our sharing parish, St. Frances of Rome, in Cicero. This trip has been an eleven year tradition that allows the students to celebrate their shared Catholic identity, grow in friendship and learn about each other s culture. The trip centers on the celebration of Día de los Muertos. Before going on the trip, the students learned about the Hispanic tradition of celebrating those who have passed. We would like to thank Señor Terry Ehardt and Mrs. Kim O Neill for helping to educate our students about this holiday. On the trip, the students from St. Anne, St. Frances and Our Lady of Charity prayed, did crafts, tried on costumes, shared a meal and played together. They created altars and skulls to remind them of specific loved ones who had died. In appreciation for hosting the event, St. Anne students did chores at home to earn money to purchase books for our sharing parish. Upwards of 100 books were purchased to enrich the third grade classroom at St. Frances. It was a great day of fellowship and fun! 14 St. Anne Church

All nations shall stream toward it; 3 many peoples shall come and say: Come, let us climb the LORD S mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths. For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD! Ps. 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9. R X = Let us go rejoicing to the house of the LORD. 1 I rejoiced because they said to me, "We will go up to the house of the LORD." 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. R X 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. R X 4 According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. R X 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! 7 May peace be within your walls, prosperity in your buildings. R X 8 Because of my relatives and friends I will say, "Peace be within you." 9 Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. R X Romans 13:11-14 Brothers and sisters: 11 You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; 12 the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh. Matthew 24:37-44 Jesus said to the disciples: 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. 39 They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. 42 Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. 43 Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. 44 So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.

17 Sharing the Living Story Recall that each liturgical year begins with the First Sunday of Advent and continues through 52 weeks to end with The Solemnity of Christ the King, the Last Sunday of the Year. This year, Cycle A, is the year of the evangelist, 1 Matthew, whose gospel we read continuously with some minor exceptions during 2013 and on into 2014 through winter Ordinary Time through Lent/ Easter, into the long season of summer Ordinary Time 2 and ending with the day of Christ the King on November 23rd, In the first century, between 80 and 90 CE, 3 Matthew, probably a Jew, 4 recast and combined the two major liturgical and catechetical traditions known to his community: the gospel of Mark and a collection of Jesus sayings known as Q. In addition, Matthew s people were steeped as well in the oral traditions (called M ) of their community. Matthew produced the gospel we have come to call by his name by combining and editing these three sources for the specific purpose of inspiring continued faith 5 among the members of his predominantly Jewish Christian 6 community. Some of the conditions that called forth this new synthesis we already met in discussing Luke during this past year. Matthew s community experienced other crises. Stringently Jewish in origins, it had experienced the trauma of separation from the synagogue 7 and a great influx of Gentiles into its ranks. This shift in its Christian existence demanded a new interpretation of old traditions, a new way of looking at Christ and his church, at the Old Testament and salvation history, at discipleship and morality. Matthew wrote for a large, sophisticated, urban, rather well-off 28 church, probably in Antioch, in Syria. As I customarily do, I will try to keep the focus on the probable meaning of Jesus actions and words to this particular community with its particular culture and its peculiar needs. The Admonition to be Vigilant. Note: chapter 24 from which this is taken is late in the gospel of Matthew; clearly not leading to the Nativity. v.37: The point here in comparing the days of Noah with the coming of the Son of Man is the unexpectedness of the crisis; it is not a focus on the wickedness that prevailed that led to the flood. It is rather that the people were so engrossed in the living out of their daily existence they are busy living life, in eating and drinking, marrying that the flood took them completely unaware. v.40: one will be taken These two sets of comparisons - two men, two women - have to do with the immediate preceding verse, 39b, the coming of the Son of Man or the Parousia. 9 At that moment, of the two who are doing the same task, who in appearance look the same, one will be taken (into the kingdom) and one will be left (out of the kingdom). This is inferred from v.42; since the precise time of the Lord s Second Coming is not known, the only attitude that the one who was taken could possibly have had is constant vigilance, since it could happen at any time. Note that Matthew, a Jew writing to a mostly Jewish audience, includes a vignette about women to emphasize the inclusion in the kingdom of those usually considered secondary; compare today s pericope from Isaiah (vv.2 and 4) in which there is mentioned nations and peoples which in Israelite culture always signifies inclusion of outsiders, gentiles, pagans, those outside the tribes of The Chosen People. Everyone is invited! v.43: If the homeowner only knew when the thief was coming, he would be ready; since he doesn t, the only recourse is to be constantly vigilant! v.44: Because the time of the coming of the Son of Man is not known (the hour is unexpected) again, the only recourse is constant vigilance. By the year 85, Jesus had been dead some 50 years! Recall also the chaos ensuing from the destruction in 70 CE of the Jerusalem and The Temple, which had been the center of Jewish religion, culture and identity; the Jewish Christians were ejected from Temple fellowship. Where was this Jesus? Most of the witnesses to his life were gone; those who did remain, as well as their followers, were frightened, impatient, losing heart, even losing faith. Under persecution from their ejection, they were subject to taunts - Jesus certainly did not arrive during this generation. Matthew s assurance is that since only the Father knows when the Parousia will occur (v.36), then the only recourse for the followers is constant vigilance. As is always the case, in order to understand any scriptural context, it is extremely important to situate ones self in the period in which the author (here, Matthew) is writing to a particular community (here, ~85 CE) rather than focusing on the historical time of the event (here, Jesus in the flesh speaking to his disciples in 33 CE). Paul says to the Romans: put on the armor of light in order to get through the periods of dark when there is about you reveling and drunkenness, debauchery and licentiousness, quarreling and jealousy. The way to be vigilant is to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah says it this way: The God of Jacob will instruct us in his ways that we may walk in his paths so that we may choose righteousness 10 among peoples and so be able to behave righteously for They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. SO WHAT? Our society is so future oriented; we buy insurance, we buy stocks, we save money. Is there anything in our personal practices that centers us on being vigilant now, today, with constancy? Stay awake! 1 Evangelist = one who proclaimed the good news about The Christ by writing down the oral tradition 2 So termed because these Sundays are identified by the use of ordinal numbers 3 Common Era, formerly AD (Anno Domini, in the year of The Lord) 4 A strong indication that this evangelist was not Matthew the tax collector nor Matthew the Apostle who knew Jesus first hand, is the fact that Matthew the author incorporated 600 of the 660 verses Mark s gospel. A reasonable assumption is that one who had walked The Way alongside Jesus would have described those events using his own words. 5 Faith = solidarity with the God of Jesus through following the ways exemplified in his actions and teachings 6 Note that this gospel displays and assumes familiarity on the part of the reader with Jewish customs/traditions, particularly knowledge of the Hebrew scripture and the centrality of the Law. 7 Recall that Jerusalem was decimated in 70 CE and the Temple, the seat of religious, spiritual and cultural identity, was destroyed so that stone was not left standing upon stone (v. Matt 24:1-2, but keep in mind that Matthew is writing some 15 years after the event!) 8 Mention of gold and silver appear twenty-six times in this gospel compared to once in Mark and 4 times in Luke 9 Parousia = the time when The Christ comes in judgment, the Second Coming, the end-time 10 Recall that righteousness, or justice, is that kind of relationship to which God invites us. The relationship is as though it was like the scales of a balance or a weighing instrument in which the pans are pretty much even. In all things, material things as well as intangibles like love or other spiritual concerns, all of God s creatures should have a more or less equal share. December 1,
