3 Did you know.. Shepherds sometimes guide in difficult pastures. For instance, in the pasture of Cohabitation of Couples who live together prior to getting married. Marriage is one of the most important decisions a person can make in life as a Vocation (a call by God). When one considers the high rate of divorce (51%), it s understandable that many couples feel cautious about making such a commitment. It seems logical that living together would offer a good preview of marriage. However, studies discovered that successful marriages really do wait until after the wedding to move in together. Statistically, most couples who live together never get married, but those who do, have a divorce rate of up to 80% higher than those who waited. Couples who cohabitated prior to marriage also have greater marital conflict and poorer communication and make more frequent visits to marriage counselors. As compared to married couples, those who cohabitate are less likely to be faithful to one another. Numerous studies show that cohabitating women are far more likely than wives to suffer domestic violence. Women who cohabit are more than three times as likely to be depressed as married women. Cohabitating couples are less sexually fulfilled than married couples. Without question, it is not easy to submit one s personal desires in order to do the will of God. But, He will abundantly bless you for your willingness to place Him at the center of your relationship. Take time each Sunday to go to Mass together, and if you decide to get married, begin looking into the marriage preparation program to reflect deeply your Marriage as Vocation. Annual Harvest Festival 5K/1 Mile Fun Run will be held Saturday, August 18th beginning at 8am at SPN. Our theme this year is Back to School! This year we are asking if anyone would like to donate either school supply items and/or monetary donations. Any monetary donation will be used to sponsor T-shirts, provide a water slide, prizes/trophies for our winners; and donated school supplies will also be used as prizes. Thank you for your generosity and participation! 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Shepherding Sheep As sheep need a shepherd, so people need someone to lead and guide them, to care for them and protect them. Pastoral care is a vocation for us all. Today, in the Gospel, Jesus too seeks to take his little group away to a quiet place and rest, only to find when their boat puts in to shore that a crowd of people are already there before them and are waiting for them. The sight of these people has a profound effect on Jesus. He is deeply moved by what he sees people who seem lost and directionless, people who seem vulnerable to every wind that blows. Mark says the people were like sheep without a shepherd. Shepherds we know provide leadership and good guidance for sheep, finding new pastures for them and keeping guard over them in the watches of the night, so that predators may not attack and kill them. Everyone needs a shepherd, but sometimes people fall through the cracks in society and no one seems to be responsible. But, as Christians, we are all involved as my brother s and my sister s keeper. When we see a need it provokes a response in us, a need to help in some way. Jesus could have turned that boat around and gone off in search of another place for peace and quiet. But to do that is to close your heart to human need. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, calls us to care for one another, because through baptism, we are kin. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Today, our original American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community.

REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Both of these fundraisers assist in the work of the mission program to Nicaragua and now Puerto Rico. For the past 18 years, the mission program has been fostering God s work in Nicaragua. Due to the civil unrest there since April 18th, the mission locations had to be changed this year to Puerto Rico to assist in the hurricane aftermath of the two big storms from last summer.
