TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For centuries, the only Eucharistic Prayer we heard as Western Catholics was the old Roman Canon, usually recited in a low voice by the priest, in Latin. By the 1940s, many Catholics were learning to follow along with the actions of the priest by means of a bilingual missal, with Latin on one side and English on the other. Drawings of the priest s position at the altar, moving from one side to the other, or bowing or standing with uplifted hands at the center, helped the readers stay on track. The Roman Canon is a long prayer, and since it was done every day for every occasion, priests had a way of galloping through it. Even though long, its structure is fairly simple, with the consecration and sacrifice clearly marked out. Sadly, this surviving prayer had triumphed over many treasures of our tradition that emphasized other dimensions of Eucharist. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in 1963 did not call directly for new Eucharistic Prayers, but that direction was inevitable. Discussion began almost immediately, and by 1967 the Vatican approved three new Eucharistic Prayers. In 1974, the Congregation for Worship unveiled the experiment of two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation, and three for Masses with Children. 3 PASTOR S CORNER: Weeds and the Wheat In today s Gospel, Jesus gives the Pharisees an answer in the parable of the weeds and the wheat. A man had sown good seeds, but then his servants told him that weeds had appeared along with the wheat. Where did they come from? He could only presume that an enemy had sown them. His servants are ready to spring into action and pull out and destroy the weeds. But the farmer is more prudent. He knows that the weeds and the wheat are quite similar in appearance, and if you start pulling up the weeds you may also destroy the wheat. He advises patience. Wait until harvest time when both wheat and weeds are mature, and then the reapers can cut them and divide them into separate bundles. Later in this passage, Jesus gives an explanation of the parable. He explains each point: the Son of Man is the sower of the good seed, the field is the world and the weeds are the subjects of the evil one. He makes it fit into the situation at the end of the world when the final harvest comes and the angels will separate out the agents of the devil, who will face the final judgement. Here the emphasis is not so much on the delay but the certainty that there will be final judgement. and He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, which will bring about true justice. In Glory means that Jesus will come to judge with the fullness of mercy, forgiveness, righteousness; offering redemption and salvation to all who have or will accept this gift that can only come from God. Jesus makes it clear that the world is not an innocent place. There will always be evil at work in it and that will frustrate the growth of the kingdom. And even in Church communities there will be a mixture of good and bad. Christians should be scandalized but not surprised that sin can exist in the Church. How should it be dealt with? Sometimes immediate action needs to be taken to root out a poisonous cancer; there is no room for compromising with scandal. But there are other occasions when God s forbearance must be recognized and in a sense we are called to imitate it. Sometimes it may be wiser to wait and not judge too quickly. There are zealous people in every community who want to act now and root out what they see as sinners or any of their influence. However, Jesus shows, both on an individual and community level, that we may do more harm than good by rushing in with our hasty judgements. Better to wait, allowing for change and repentance. This is not a false tolerance of sin, but rather a situation that can occur in families and in church communities and needs true and wise patience.
