3 Do You Know? What the Catholic Church teaches about justice? Justice is the third fundamental value of the Church s social doctrine. As a virtue, justice is defined as the firm resolve to render each his due. It is considered one of the four cardinal virtues, with temperance, fortitude, and prudence. In discussing the value of justice, the Social Doctrine of the Church does not forget that there is a justice due God as well as a justice due man. We say at Mass, Lift up your hearts to the Lord ; It is right and just ; here the heart, in biblical terms, refers to the whole human from the center. Justice has both a subjective and an objective component, both of which must be present for real justice to exist; From the subjective point of view, justice is translated into behavior that is based on the will to recognize the other as a person. From an objective view, justice constitutes the decisive criteria of morality in the intersubjective and social sphere (Compendium No. 201). Sincerity is not enough. Legalistic justice is not enough. There must be joined an internal attitude and external objectiveness. We are to seek justice with justice; that is the only authentic justice. Particularly prevalent in our relativist, materialist and secular society is the notion that justice is not an objective reality, but a conventional reality. For conventionalists, justice is something determined by social agreement, by social contract, by social popularity. Justice, in fact, is not merely a simple human convention, because it is not first determined by the law but by the profound identity of the human being (Compendium 202). Justice must be open to, informed by, tempered through, and supplemented with such Godly virtues as solidarity, love, mercy, and forgiveness where justice is not their master but their servant where justice is served by love, mercy and forgiveness. It is an amazing teaching that stops us in our tracks. Can it possibly be done? In the little things we find it easy to forgive, to forgive those we love, but to be kind to our enemies seems to be beyond our abilities. Why should we be good to those who hate or hurt us? The answer is because the Lord is asking us to become something very different in the world; we are being asked to become children of the Living God. We cannot presume to be God s sons and daughters if we do not listen to what the Lord is asking us to do. God is kind and merciful to the ungrateful and the wicked. We are being asked to be like this too, to be like God. We are not being asked to give in to others or to their wickedness. All wrong-doing must be unmasked, challenged and addressed. The work of justice is vital for all of us; but justice is only the beginning of the healing work that is needed. For those of us and for loved ones who have been wickedly hurt by the actions of others, the pain of loss can bring on the even worse suffering of unending hatred or deep depression. Some of these events are tragic; but others are the result of human carelessness. By ourselves, these traumas are too great for us to bear; we need God s grace to help us cope with the evils that are done by free will choice. We are not meant to simply let things go. We are to name and claim the wrongs that are done, just as Jesus asked the servant to justify his violent behavior. Then, guide to tame the wrongs through retribution and rehabilitation. In the end, Jesus was put on a cross and prayed that people be forgiven because they do not understand the terrible things they do. Compassion is the power that Heals. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to.
