If you would like to learn them, please go to our web-site and click on the Mass of Exaltation by Mr. Jason Liles, as pictured on the left, it will bring you to each Mass Part on YouTube.com. We hope to HEAR you all singing with us!! REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. 3 Do you know Advent? Human beings cannot live without hope. Unlike animals, we are blessed or cursed with the ability to think about the future and to fear our actions to shaping it. So essential is this to human life, that human beings cannot live without hope, without something to live for, without something to look forward to. We hope for success, security, for our children to be spared from our sufferings to have a better life, for a better church, a better community, a better world. We hope for the same things as the Old Testament people, for their hopes are not yet realized. But we differ from them in two ways. First, the coming of Jesus in history, as a partial fulfillment of God s promises, immeasurably confirms and strengthens our hope. Secondly, we differ from Old Testament people because Jesus has revealed to us that God is not far off, but is already in our midst. Therefore, the importance of Advent liturgy is to focus on John the Baptist and Mary as our definition of hope. They recognize the newness of God s plan of hope; they serve as models for the Church in discerning the presence of our Savior in the world as we prepare to receive His gift of hope. Gaudete Sunday ~ 3rd Sunday of Advent so called from the first word of the antiphon at the Introit. Gaudete Rejoice, sets a tone of joyful expectations for the Lord s birth and Second Coming, as does the permitted use of the color Rose Reflection Book: Why and How Much Should I Be Giving to the Church, To The Poor by Ben Scott Over the next few weeks, you will be hearing about the upcoming Increased Offertory Program at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. This effort is very important as we move forward with the mission and vision of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. We, as a parish family, along with God s help, have helped change so many lives in our community! In order to continue our mission and ministries, we encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family reflecting on this book and the work we do. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass, especially during our upcoming special Commitment Weekend on January 12 & January 13. If you have any questions regarding the Increased Offertory Program, please feel free to contact the parish office. Third Sunday of Advent He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Today we hear the prophetic words of John the Baptist. Last Sunday, John was introduced as one who preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He wants people to change but they are reluctant. They want to stay as they are, undisturbed. But Jon has been sent to prepare the people for the coming of the Lord who will bring salvation. He warns them of the judgement to come and their consciences are touched. They ask him, What must we do? In St. Luke s Gospel, Jesus links so many of his parables with the warning of the dangers of riches and accumulation of possessions. Now John does not tell his listeners that they must produce fruits, he specifies what each group should do in practice. He demands change that is not just superficial but makes them uncomfortable, for they are called to share their possessions more justly. John s words of judgement arouse the people from their complacency but prepare them to receive the good news of salvation which Christ will bring. We may sometimes wish that God would leave us alone. But John the Baptist and the prophets tells us that this is the worst thing God could do. Left to ourselves we get lost following whatever desire we have for possessions, money or just a comfortable, life of conveniences. John the Baptist still points to a deeper freedom in order to make us ready to receive Christ. Beyond the pain and inconvenience of change we can rejoice in Christ s presence as he comes to us this Christmas. Be happy, the Lord is very near says St. Paul in today s second reading. For more information, please call Katherine Marcantel or the Church office TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors. Rose is a color seldom seen, used only twice a year. Today, Gaudete Sunday, is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse: Gaudete - Latin for Rejoice! This year s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, were difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. That theology is largely unplanned: it s all because of the costliness of true purple, which at that time, only royalty could afford.
