Remember, we have an Adoration Chapel in the church that is open 24/7 and is always available. Return to the Lord Update Original goal for St. Philip Neri was $409,338 however, the amount we pledged is $716,152.76, which is 166% over goal!!! As of 1/11/19 $439, has been received/ accredited. 3 Did You Know? Why does the priest pour water into the wine and put a piece of the bread into the cup? Both actions are very ancient and began as practical necessities. In the ancient world, the Greeks added water to wine because it was often thick, gritty, and too strong. The Romans loved all things Greek, so they adopted Greek manners and spread them to the lands they conquered. And even though it was not originally a Jewish custom to add water to wine, it soon became part of the Passover meal itself and, hence, part of our Mass. As early as the fourth century, catechists explained that the water represented humanity and the wine divinity. Once you put the water into the wine, it's impossible to take it out again. Because of Jesus, humanity can never again be separated permanently from God. The practice of dropping a piece of consecrated bread into the cup started when the bishop broke the bread before Communion, he would set aside a piece for each missing Church. A minister brought this fermentum to each place later, where the priest would drop it into the chalice to be swallowed-and most everyone drank from the same cup in those days. Thus the bishop's Eucharist "fermented" this celebration. Also the Body of Christ co-mingling with the Blood of Christ as an expression of One Body and Blood of Christ, in us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Today, many Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to also be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each take a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Do whatever he tells you. In today s Gospel, Jesus turns water into wine, and it is not the only transformation that takes place: sadness is turned into joy, and need into abundance. We, too, are invited to change; we, too, may be filled again with the Holy Spirit. The wedding at Cana in Galilee was a sign of God s love for us. Jesus transforms us, too, that we might experience the Spirit-filled life. Today s Gospel is also about a wedding, one that Jesus and his disciples attended in Cana and conveys an important truth about God s desire to be one with God s people in a new covenantal relationship. This was not a new message. The prophets had looked forward to a time when the Lord would pour out his Spirit upon humankind and write his law of love upon their hears. The prophet Isaiah in our first reading today describes how the Lord will wed his faithful people, like a young man marrying a virgin. People did not expect such an event until the end of time, so it came as a surprise when Jesus announced that the reign of God was already arriving. The wedding at Cana is like a parable, showing how God longs to relate to us, not in harsh and exacting judgement, but in tender, faithful love. John s Gospel provides an interesting detail about the six stone jars. Since the number seven is Jewish idea of perfection, six stands for incompleteness. However hard we may try, we can never achieve complete holiness by our own efforts. We turn to Jesus in our incompleteness. Mary longs for us to see Christ s glory in our midst and put our whole trust in Him; - Do whatever he tells you. This is our chance to begin again, to accept his forgiveness and healing, and allow God s Spirit to fill our hearts to completion where we can only reach perfection by allowing God, the only perfect one, to perfect us. The first miracle of Jesus after his baptism tells ALL. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God.
