Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas. 3 Did You Know?... Apostolic Succession is a Biblical Concept? Catholics believe that Bishops are, by the intention of Jesus Christ, the successors of the apostles, and that the Catholic Church traces itself back historically, in an unbroken succession, to the apostles and the early Church. St. Paul teaches us that the Church is built on the foundation of the apostles (Eph 2:20) whom Christ himself chose (Jn 6:70, Acts 1:2, Mt 16:18). In Mark 6:30, the twelve original disciples of Jesus are called apostles and Matthew 10:1-5 and Revelation 21:14 speak of the twelve apostles. After Judas the Iscariot defected, the remaining eleven apostles appointed his successor, Matthias (Acts 1:20-26). Since Judas is called a bishop (episkopos) in this passage (1:20), then by logical extension all apostles can be considered bishops. If the apostles are bishops, and one of them was replaced by another, after the Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Christ, then we have an explicit example of Apostolic Succession in the Bible since before A.D. 35. Apostolic Succession is a very strong theme in the writings of the early Church Fathers, notably St. Irenaeus in the second century: Polycarp, however, was instructed not only by the apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Jesus Christ, but was also appointed bishop of the Church of Smyrna, by the apostles in Asia...He always taught those things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church had handed down, which are true. To these things all the Churches in Asia bear witness, as do also the successors of Polycarp even to the present time. Catechism paragraphs: 3, 77, 642, 815, 830, 833, , 935, 981, 1087, 1120, LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ s life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul s fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord s Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. 5th Sunday of Easter The Vine and the Branches You might be surprised to know that the oldest and largest grapevine in the world is in Britain, at Hampton Court Palace, south of London. It is known as the Great Vine, planted in 1768, 250 years ago this year. It is a very fruitful vine. The traditional grapevine is one of the world s most important agricultural crops. At the time of Jesus vineyards were everywhere, and practices relating to their cultivation would be very familiar. In today s Gospel Jesus emphasizes that a vine needs to be carefully tended, and that it has a living and connected structure. The vine produces fruit through the branches and the branches are dependent on the central vine. Jesus describes himself as the true vine and says, my Father is the vinedresser. The love and connection between God, Jesus and our community is described in John s Gospel using the image of the vine and the branches. Jesus tells us that you are the branches and we will bear fruit in plenty if we remain with him. Union with Christ is the primary fruitfulness, giving our lives meaning and direction. Our opportunity of bearing any fruit worthy of our natures and of God s purpose concerning us is by union with Jesus Christ. If we do not have that, there may be plenty of activity and mountains of work in our lives, but there will be no lasting fruit. The next time you eat a grape and savor its succulent flavor, reflect upon the fruits that we share in our lives because of our relationship to God, to each other, and to all of our family and friends. Open your hearts to Christ and let His life and His Spirit come into you. Through our prayer here today we are strengthened in our belief that Christ is the vine and we are the branches. Through the strength of God s love for us, we are able to produce much fruit in working for the common good, in caring for each other and the world we live in, caring for an elderly parent or frail relative, helping a neighbor, or teaching a child, supporting a charity and/or our Church parish. These are all fruits of the true vine that feed the true branches.
