Don t forget your favorite blanket & pillow! Sponsored by St Philip Neri Youth Ministry THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Harvest Festival Board Members, Volunteers, Bands, Vendors, Sponsors, St. Philip Neri Family and Friends. So much time and effort and sacrifices have been generously donated from many of our parishioners to help make our Harvest Festival a Huge Success!! Know that your generosity of time and effort over the past year that brings us to this weekend do not go unnoticed and we can never express enough our deep gratitude and appreciation for all you do. So during this Harvest time, we reap the bounty of your love and support in so many ways, THANK YOU!! Thank you to all of our parishioners, for without your support.we would not be able to put on this festival and your monetary contributions, your time and talent. Your support and hard work is beyond blessing to our church parish. A SPECIAL Thank you to our Confirmation Class this year for all of your help and hard work at Harvest Festival. Much Appreciated!!!
3 Do you know what the scriptures teach about Tithing? A tenth? 10%? Offering to God Tithing is a sensitive issue and for some, it will require time and a change of heart. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength to be open to His message and the courage to do God s will. 1 Timothy 6: trust in God who provides us richly with all things for our use. Charge them to do good, to be rich in good works and generous, sharing what they have. Leviticus 27:30 All tithes of the land, whether in grain from the field or in fruit from the trees, belong to the Lord, as sacred to Him. Tithing means giving a tenth (10%) of all income as a charitable offering to Christ Church and the poor or those in need. Tithing is a responsibility of all Christians and is to be taken very seriously. However, there are legitimate exceptions to tithing such as family members living in poverty, struggling to take care of their basic needs. Regardless of the circumstances, every family makes an offering to sacrificially give something no matter how small the gift and then build on that when possible in the future when things get better. Jesus gave an example of real sacrificial giving in today s gospel, Mark 12:41, where the poor widow gave a few pennies, all from what she had to live on. Tithing is a symbol of dependence totally on God. Our tithe is a way to recognize that everything belongs to God and we are entrusted to use these gifts to glorify His name out of gratitude Tithing could consist of 10% to the church; or 5% to church and 5% to charity; or any other way. RCIA Rite of Welcome and Acceptance As a community of faith, we will gather outdoors in the front of the Church at the beginning of 10:30am Mass on Nov 18th to celebrate Acceptance for those who are seeking baptism and to Welcome those who are already baptized as they all prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter ~ Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. This Rite of Initiation is suited to a spiritual journey of Adults that varies according to the many forms of God s grace, the free cooperation of the individuals, the action of the Church, and the circumstances of time and place; bearing the Christian paschal mystery the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Please keep in prayer all of those who are currently on the RCIA journey as well as their sponsors and RCIA Catechists and Team, under the guidance of Deacon Roy Nash. 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Totus Tuus - Totally Yours St. John Paul II coined this phrase during his papacy as he committed his service totally to God through Mary. The same is reflected in our scripture passages this weekend. As followers of Jesus today we can only strive to live life simply and demonstrate that there is another way: a way that becomes possible only when we accept that we cannot redeem ourselves. The more we treasure the gift of God s Spirit, the more we will let go and trust. What more beautiful mediation could we ask for than the image of the other widow in today s readings; the one who responded to Elijah and shared her bread and water with him? Her generosity was rewarded: the jar was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied. Jesus returns to this message again and again: the world does not belong to us; it belongs to his Father and we are entrusted with its stewardship. Consequently, the more we try to gather wealth for ourselves, the more vulnerable and insecure we become, needing to build bigger barns or invest in more security for our protection. By the same token, the more preoccupied we are about status and wealth, the more selfish we become. The history of the world teaches us that human beings presume that with enough wealth that human nature has redeemed itself and people will not abuse the system for their own needs. this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed she put in everything, trusting in God. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Interested in Becoming Catholic or completing your Sacraments of Initiation? It s not too late to join us for RCIA please call Deacon Nash at We look forward to welcoming you to journey with us in learning more about our faith rooted in scriptures and apostolic traditions. Proposed Christmas Present to St. Philip Neri Church Interested in providing a Monument Sign at the corner of 6th St and 4th Avenue that would display the name of our Church and also provide a double sided LED sign board that could announce Mass times and various messages of upcoming events. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the Great War ) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent.
