3 Did You Know? What is Original Sin washed away at baptism? The doctrine of original sin is that in Adam all have sinned; and the doctrine of justification is that in Christ all are righteous. Namely, through the first Adam all have died and through the second Adam (Christ) all have life. Romans 5:12, sin came into the world through one man and death through sin. Romans 5:15-19, Many died through one man s trespass...for the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation...because of one man s trespass, death reigned through that one man...then as one man s trespass led to condemnation for all men...by one man s disobedience many were made sinners. These passages explain biblically the Church s doctrine of original sin; first sin. Therefore, every human being created by God has the propensity to sin. Let us be reminded that in order for something to be considered a sin, there must be knowledge of sin, there must be intention to sin, and there must be the act of sin all three must take place to be sin. The sin of Adam affected all human nature; to actually use free will to say NO to God, to disobey God. As the Catechism says, original sin is called sin only in an analogical sense; it is a sin contracted and not committed - a state and not an act (CCC 404). We have to be reborn in baptism to be in Christ, to become a member of the body of Christ, to be saved; because it is God s gift to us! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately?. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity in his baptism. This is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. Baptism of the Lord New birth can be both a joy and a challenge. St. Paul remarks that mothers are prepared to go through the pangs of childbirth because of their excitement a their newborn child. We have to remember that St. Paul was a man, and his view may have been rather idealistic. There had been so many prophecies and predictions of the one who was expected, the one who was to come in the Jewish tradition. What remained uncertain was what the one to come would be. There is a sense that God will come with power, as our first reading from Isaiah indicates, yet the Lord will also be like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms and holding them against his breast. His public life will be the expression of how he fulfills the hopes and promises the people have listened to all their lives. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus is at prayer after his baptism that the Holy Spirit comes down upon Him, sealing the calling he has received from His Father, who in turn declares the closeness of their relationship, which has three aspects: Jesus is God s own Son, and so he is the Father s beloved, and God s favor rests on Him. These same three aspects happen to us at our baptism. This is the moment we become aware of the God-given sharing in creation that has just taken place in the birth of each child. We are all God s children; that we too are beloved by God. Parents can aim to emulate that divine love in all they strive to do in bringing up their children. It does not mean spoiling them. It does mean both challenging them to fulfill their potential while caring for their nurture and growth like the shepherd with His lambs. Finally, God s favor rests on both us and all our children, for we are God s children too. We sometimes lose track of this strong affirmation of God for each one of us. Just as the Archangel Gabriel greeted Mary as full of grace, so we begin and continue our lives under the support and favor of our God. May we all hear these words of God to us, You are my Beloved; my favor rests on you.? Proposed Christmas Present? Interested in providing a Monument Sign at the corner of 6th St and 4th Avenue that would display the name of our Church and also provide a double sided LED sign board to announce Mass times and various messages of upcoming events. The proposed cost is about $20,000. Interested donors, please see Fr. Keith at your convenience.

As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word.
