TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today s solemnity is a eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide. Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. Before our mind s eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present. Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from Corpus Christi to The Body and Blood of Christ and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. 3 Pastor s Corner. Jesus said, I am the Bread of Life. When life begins for any of us, those first gifts are the ones we need to survive and thrive. We need the presence of those who love us; the bonding of the child to mother and father. We need the daily nourishment of food and care so that we may grow stronger. And we need the joy and love of others, extended family and friends, to introduce us to the world. When the Lord began to form his own family, his community of disciples, his first gift to them was his very presence. They lived with him night and day; each day they grew in their understanding of him and of who he was. His presence inspired them and gave them joy and hope for life. He fed them with every word from the Father to truly nourish their lives. A new company was born into the world, the followers of Christ, and it was the word of Jesus and His presence that nourished and formed this faith family, taking the form of a sacred and sacrificial meal, the bread and wine transformed into His Body and Blood, a sacrament to bind His Church together where He resides in us as we become the living presence of the Lord in the world. St. Paul, writing to the Galatians, I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me. This is the life that the Lord invites us to constantly live. By receiving the body and blood of Christ into ourselves we can become part of that living Lord in this world. In this way, we first share the gift of life by our presence to others through the simple and powerful act of selfgiving allowing the grace of the Lord to be there at work in the world. Secondly, we can manifest the presence of Christ in our speaking with kind and thoughtful words, patience and understanding, as the word of God comes through us as it did and does in Christ to nourish people s lives by the words they hear from us. Thirdly, we share in the presence of Christ through our sharing of love and affection, kindness and consideration, where the company of Jesus live by this Spirit. On the Feast of Corpus Christi, the many ways of the presence of Christ come together to form the fullness of life; the presence of Jesus among us. The Body of Christ (Corpus Christi) seeks to transform our body and blood so that we offer ourselves freely to be His vessels in the world that make real, tangible His Word, His Nourishment, His Joy, His Care, His Love to the world. Fortnight for Freedom Jun 21 Jul 4 Catholics across our nation are observing Fortnight for Freedom as we continue to see increasing violent persecution of religious believers around the world, and we pray that the Fortnight will lift up the sacrifice of these believers. We can honor them by robustly living our faith and by welcoming those who have survived religious persecution. Without religious liberty properly understood, all Americans suffer, especially the poor and vulnerable, if we, as Christians, are not able to contribute to the efforts of education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights for all people and social services that religious Americans do every day.
