Please call rectory for more info. THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. 3 Do you know Meaning of the Tabernacle Lamp in Catholic Churches? One of the most comforting symbols in Catholicism is the tabernacle lamp the small red flicker of the flame burning before tabernacle a sign that Christ is truly Emmanuel, God among us. In the Old Testament, God told Moses that a lamp filled with the pure oil should perpetually burn in the Tabernacle (Ex 27:20-21). This is the precedent for the Catholic Church s custom of burning a candle (at all times) before the tabernacle the gold house where the Eucharistic Body of Christ is reserved under lock and key. Protestants often note that Catholic churches always seem to be open to the public, whereas Protestant congregations are typically closed throughout the week. The difference is the Holy Eucharist. Praying in a Catholic church before the Eucharist is different than praying at home. Christ is substantially present in the tabernacle. The lamp is always burning in the Catholic Church it is a sign saying, Christ is here in the Holy Eucharist within this tabernacle. His heart is burning with love for you. Mystically Christ is the true light which enlightens every man (Jn 1:9). Sometimes there were often several lamps that hung from the ceiling of the sanctuary before the tabernacle. The traditional number for large sanctuaries was seven lamps, since it is the perfect number and represents the sevenfold perfection of the Holy Spirit. According to St. Alphonsus Liguori, it would be a grave sin to leave the altar of the Blessed Sacrament without this candle or lamp burning for any prolonged length of time. The story of Bartimaeus is like a blueprint for the ideal disciple: he believes that Jesus is the Messiah, he is called by Jesus, he has faith in Jesus and he experiences Jesus healing power. This story describes two energies coming together: the energy of Jesus and the energy of the believer. Jesus stopped to talk to somebody who was regarded by everybody as a nobody, and his followers were astounded. In today s gospel narrative, we see how indifferent followers of Jesus were to the cry of a person in distress, but Jesus acknowledged the presence of the blind beggar and healed him. The blindness of the crowd was also exposed. What is it that blinds us today? Do we say yes to the Divine invitation to see, to live more vibrant and meaningful lives and to reach out to people in need. St. Mother Teresa once said, we need the poor more than the poor need us because we have much to learn from vulnerable people. Mark s Gospel compels us to consider Bartimaeus with his needs and prophetic insights; Jesus with his compassion and grace; the crowd with its determination to keep Bartimaeus both blind and invisible, and others with the opportunity to guide him to Jesus with the hopeful words, Courage...get up; he is calling you. God wants to saves us and we are yearning to be saved. True faith in Jesus, and trusting that faith, can help us experience healing and reflection upon our areas of blindness. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and spiritual hospitality in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs.
