3 Did You Know?... things to know about the Doctrine of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the transformation of time and space into the new kingdom. The universal presence of Jesus Christ, made visible through the Eucharist, is the necessary condition of our being able to pray as Christians at all. In prayer we conquer limitations of time and space; in our prayer before the Eucharist, we begin to see that eternity is not the end of time but the fulfillment of time without limitations of this world. In John 6:51-56, Jesus states repeatedly that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood has Eternal Life. He was speaking literally and was so firm that many followers objected and left him. Moreover, in the Last Supper passages, nothing suggest that Jesus was speaking symbolically when He said of the bread that He held in His hands, This is my body, and over the wine, This is my blood (Mt 26:26; Mk 14:22; Lk 22:19-20). The Catholic Church requires people to accept its teachings in order to receive Communion, not out of desire to exclude anyone, but in recognition that the Eucharist is, as St. Augustine wrote, a sign of unity and a bond of charity, and that partaking presupposes a commonly held belief (Eph 4:3-6), which sadly is not yet the case among all Christians. Catholics believe that the Mass is a re-presentation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, transcending space and time as an ongoing sacrifice, not a repeated sacrifice, but one made once, as real presence to us; In memory of Him TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of today s solemnity begin with thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the Holy Blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. Body & Blood of Christ Corpus Christi A common complaint against the Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist is that we believe that Christ can be present in every tabernacle throughout the world. How can He be in so many places? We could reply that God is everywhere, but God is present to all things as the Creator. God is not in everywhere, but God is present to everywhere, by causing it to be. In the Eucharist, Jesus is present in his humanity. Yet many Christians believe that when they pray to Our Lord, they are heard by a human ear; that our prayers enter into his human heart; and that his compassion is both human and divine. If we believe that, then we are already committed to a Christ who is extended in time and space, able to be present to all the human beings who call on him. How this can be is beyond our understanding while we live on earth. Yet how we are to make use of this great mystery is very simple. St. John Vianney, that great nineteenth-century priest and pastor also known as the Cure d Ars, used to simply say over and over again, He is there; he is there. In the Gospel, at the Last Supper Jesus says he will not drink from the branch of the vine until the day comes when he will drink it new in the Kingdom of God. This may not be quite the translation that we hear in the Mass, but it is important to understand that Christ does not just drink new wine in the kingdom, he makes the new wine that he drinks with us because when we share in the body and blood of Christ, we are receiving something altogether new. The resurrection has transformed the body of Christ into a new wine, for all to share. We too, if we live in Christ, share in this extension of the self. We may pray for people all over the world, we may pray for the dead, and pray for those who are yet to be born in this world. Our prayer is more than just an extension of our goodwill. Prayer is sharing in the power of the risen Christ. If it is sincere prayer, then it will bring us beyond ourselves and lead us to be healers with him. In heaven, through Christ, all the redeemed will be in a continual presence to each other and to all creation. We cannot understand fully how this is to be, but in our prayer before Christ in the Eucharist, we can already begin to perceive the reality. Jesus departs from this life through his death on the cross, but he assures us, in the concluding words of Matthew s Gospel, that, I am with you always, to the end of time. And this assurance seeks fulfillment in us.

Sara Ange PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet.
